This book is a little dated because it was written about 11 years ago- the statistics are old and the info about web sites info is not up to date. The suggestions about getting stamps from family and friends (Chapters 7 & 8)are no longer possible for most Americans, and the info about finding local stamp dealers is no longer valid - but just about everything else is correct and accurate. And, there are a few errors - see if you can find two mis-labeled photos of stamps in chapter 11. This book has much that is a big help to beginners and even intermediate collectors, and is written in a style that is easy to read. Very helpful and informative. After 53 years of stamp collecting, even I learned a couple new things! Well worth adding to your library, even if you have been collecting for a long time and think you know it all! Robert W. Martin, Life Member American Philatelic Society

I feel it was a very good book to start learning about stamp collecting. I wanted to find out if any stamps in my postcard collection were with more then the 25 cents for the card. I am learning a lot. But feel I will need to go on to a more updated version of stamp collecting.

I will enjoy reading this!

This book will lead you into the wonderful hobby of stamp collecting at a gradual and enjoyable pace. The discussion on collecting, organizing and storing really help someone like me just getting started. Since reading this and becoming familiar with all the terms used in stamp collecting I have learned how to ask pertinent, meaningful questions in the online collecting forums I often visit. Do yourself a favor and read this book if your really interested in learning how to easily collect stamps from around the world or just here at home. Enjoy, but fair warning it is a very addictive hobby.

This volume in the 'Dummies' series is written with a humorous light touch that makes it especially attractive to the Dummy who knows he is one and doesn't need to be reminded that he is one by being frog-marched through impenetrable jargon. In addition, Richard Sine or his editor have had the foresight to break the topics he treats up into very small sections and subsections. The result is a light-hearted but content-rich introduction to the topic, one that this reviewer is only beginning to explore.I cannot imagine a more effective starting point for the would-be stamp collector or - like me - the person who needs to know before he invests time and treasure whether this is something he's going to be able to manage.

good for those who want to get into collecting stamps. I would recommend this product and would buy from this seller again.

Very nice book. Love it. Gives great detail about stamp collecting for those of us who don't know much about stamps.

Very nice and informative.....

How Biblical Languages Work: A Student's Guide to Learning Hebrew and Greek

Review

" Students and others who want to study biblical languages will find this a helpful tool. The authors discuss the basic principles of language: morphemes, phonemes, verbs, nouns, phrases, and clauses. They further explain how semantics, figurative language, context, and sentence structure work to produce meaningful thought. An understanding of these terms greatly facilitates the mastery of Greek and Hebrew. (Glen H. Jones Pulpit Helps 2004-11-01)It is an ideal supplement to the first-year Hebrew and Greek student or any student seeking to do better Bible word studies. This book includes practical exercises, a glossary of terms, resources for further study, and a listing of helpful Internet sites relating to languages. (Book Marks 2007-01-01)

From the Back Cover

An ideal supplement to first year Hebrew and Greek grammars, this practical guide makes learning the biblical languages a less daunting task. By introducing students to characteristics and functions of all human language, experienced linguists Silzer and Finley create the basis from which to describe the major features of Hebrew and Greek: how the sounds are pronounced, how words are put together, how phrases and clauses are structured, how words convey meaning, and how languages change.  The book includes practical exercises, a glossary of linguistic and grammatical terms widely used in standard grammars of Greek and Hebrew, and other resources for further study, including Internet sites. “Thanks to Silzer and Finley, we [now] have a book that discusses the basic principles of linguistics and semantics in a readable, understandable manner that will not intimidate or discourage the novice. Students who read this book before taking first year Hebrew and/or Greek should find the task of learning the language(s) much less painful and tedious than it would be otherwise.” —Robert B. Chisholm Jr. Dallas Theological Seminary “This marvelously clear and cogent introduction to biblical linguistics should be required reading for every student of Hebrew and Greek. . . . The only shame is that this book was not available decades ago, when the rest of us were doing our language study!” —Mark L. Strauss, Ph.D. Bethel Seminary, San Diego, Cal. Peter James Silzer (Ph.D., Australian National University) has worked in linguistics and Bible translation since 1972 and now teaches in the School of Intercultural Studies at Biola University in La Mirada, California, on behalf of the Summer Institute of Linguistics and Wycliffe Bible Translators. Thomas John Finley (Ph.D., University of California Los Angeles) is professor of Old Testament and Semitics at Talbot School of Theology in La Mirada, California. He is the editor of A Bilingual Concordance to the Targum of the Prophets: Ezekiel and a commentary on Joel, Obadiah, and Micah.

The basic thrust of this book is that if you understand truths about language in general, then you will better learn the biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek. This “big picture” approach is designed to make your life as a beginning learner of the biblical languages easier. In my humble opinion, this book was a useful guide and provided a beneficial set of tools to accelerate my proficiency in Hebrew. At the very least, readers will have a better understanding of how language works in general. There is some information in the book that is very basic (like the discussion of nouns, verbs, and phrases) but the explication of semantics (the study of the meaning of language), the nonliteral aspects of meaning (e.g., metaphors, idioms, and ambiguous language) and discourse patterns (groups of words that are considered to be a unit) equips you make better interpretive sense than the mere words on paper. The final chapter of the book describes the three different types of learning styles (visual, auditory, tactile) with an assessment to help you discern which way you learn best. This is the chapter will empower you to know the practical strategies you can employ to make your time studying the most productive.I purchased this book as required by a graduate level seminary course (Introduction to Hebrew). As a student that has referenced many other self-study Hebrew books, I can sincerely say How Biblical Languages Work enabled me to not only learn and speak Hebrew with greater ease, but it also gave me a practical guide to navigate Hebrew with clarity. I recommend it for any serious Bible student seeking to learn Hebrew or Greek for the purpose of reading the OT/NT in the original languages.

I'm giving this book four stars for the good, but because of the bad it probably shouldn't be rated that high. The good is that many linguistic terms are defined and examples given using those terms that compare English, Greek and Hebrew. This can be exceptionally helpful when learning any language. In my opinion, this book would be most helpful after a student had learned the new language's alphabet and a few rules, endings, prefixes, and vocabulary words of the language being learned. In this way, the student can maximize his/her benefit by supplementing his/her study with this book.Regarding the bad, there are several issues. First, in my opinion, I would have preferred that the authors not used the SBL and IPA transliterations. I would have much preferred the actual Hebrew letters and Greek letters being used in all examples. If people don't know how to sound out or read the given language's letters, then they need to learn them. That's my opinion. This next part is fact - not opinion. The authors assume wrongly that the Hebrew vowel points were invented by the Masoretes, which is absolutely wrong. For example, the authors state on page 45, "Traditionally, the reader had to figure out the right vowel sounds from the context." The Bible says that is wrong and common sense says it is wrong. A few (three by my count) wrong-thinking scholars from the 1200s and 1500s claimed that the vowel points were invented as a conjectural claim. This does not make it correct. Our Lord said "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." A jot is a smallest Hebrew consonant and a tittle is the smallest Hebrew vowel (this is easily proven). Vowels had to be there at the beginning in order to pronounce the words in Scripture and they are preserved as Jesus said and as Scripture states in Psalm 12:6-7 (and numerous other places). If you believe what the Bible says and a believer should (1 Timothy 3:16-17), then it is easy to understand this. If not, then you'll never get it, unfortunately. Only the Holy Spirit can reveal truth and ONLY to a true believer who seeks truth NOT humanistic rationalizations.Another problem I have with this book is that the authors reference Eugene Nida and Bruce Metzger (and others), two unregenerate men, as being Biblical authorities. They certainly knew Greek and Hebrew and knew something about the Bible, but they were NOT saved men. They didn't know Christ as their Saviour. This is quite obvious when one reads their works. Unfortunately, these men led many, many folk astray during their lifetimes.Lastly, the authors cite several English versions of the Bible in their book such as the NRSV, NASV, NIV, NLT and the KJB. The authors also cite their own unique translations, while claiming that they are literal translations. The problem is that the first four versions are translated from corrupt Greek and Hebrew manuscripts. The King James Bible is a good translation, because it is translated from the the true Greek and Hebrew manuscripts. It isn't perfect (as some claim), but it has no theological or doctrinal problems, whereas all the others do. Buyer beware.

Silzer and Finley (SF) were able to present everything you *must* know for first year Greek/Hebrew regarding languages. I found Dr. Black's class in Greek (at SEBTS) amazing because he taught us how words are formed and why they change, rather than making us memorize an infinite number of paradigms. SF have the same approach (though this is not a grammar, of course) regarding the "movement" of language. If you have taken studied Greek and Hebrew beyond first year, I find this book very redundant (unless you want to refresh your memory, but I chose to do that by reading other grammars cover-to-cover). Nonetheless, if your classes are not teaching you the language (i.e. they are merely teaching you how to get good at memorization and recollecting short propositions and paradigms), then this book would be a good supplement for your grammar. Everything from writing, spelling, morphology, phonology, essential phrasing, discourse, semantics, change and language variation (very important chapter!) is covered on a "the-most-important-things-you-must-know" basis. The book ends with practical tips which are a little outdated, but the reader is welcomed to Google alternatives to cassette tapes and 30 year-old books. If you know both Hebrew and Greek, I think this book is more beneficial, since SF will show you how languages have discernible patterns that occur universally (e.g. absolute universals, from Greenberg's work), which can help your brain associate how languages work. I would have loved to have read this when I was starting Greek, which probably could have saved me some time going over MBG and BDF.In any case, it is a quick read if you know your languages, and a necessary one if you are learning as a beginner. Worth reading it :)
