In 2003 Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, who was in charge of the Iraq post-war reconstruction, offered up some advice stating,"Tourism is going to be something important in that country as soon as the security situation is resolved, and I think that will be resolved as the Iraqis take over more and more responsibility for their own government." (Source: George Packer. The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, NY 2005, pp. 242). It is now 2015 and with the rise of ISIL, the security situation in Iraq has deteriorated greatly. Last month, Bradt released the 2nd edition of their Iraq guidebook, first published in 2002. It was clearly a bold move as between 2003 and 2009, tourism in Iraq had all but disappeared except for religious tourism to the holy Shia sites of Karbala and Najaf. In 2009, one of the book's authors,Geoff Hann, organized a tour to the country which encompassed almost the length of Iraq from Kurdistan down to Basra stopping at many archaeological sites along the way. From then on, Mr. Hann has led very comprehensive tours to the country annually. His tour company is one of less than a handful to do that. Clearly Iraq is not a travel destination that can easily be arranged, and the number of tourists (not the religious type) that make it to the country annually probably do not reach 3 digits. It is in this context that I find the publication of this guidebook a real surprise and kudos to Bradt for making this possible.. This book is written to be a guidebook only. It will not go into depth about Mesopotamian and Iraqi history, nor does it strive to be an archaeological catalog of the ancient sites. Alongside the descriptions of the many cities and sites, one is surprised to see listings which include "how to get there", rankings of hotels, shopping, lists of local restaurants, etc. How many tourists actually get into Iraq to see the sites described in the book? Unfortunately the answer is "not many". Some of the sites have now sadly been destroyed by ISIL, and the book does mention this; BUT, the book is a good read, well written by people who have traveled extensively in the country, and and gives hope that in the future tourism will definitely become an important factor in the Iraqi economy. The only criticism I have is that it would be nice to have the inclusion of more photographs.

Fast into the Night: A Woman, Her Dogs, and Their Journey North on the Iditarod Trail

Review

Not only does Fast Into the Night detail in spare and honest prose all the grit and excitement that is the Iditarod, but its author aptly takes us along on her personal journey with all its internal struggles, tribulations, and tumult. At the same time she captures the remarkable bond that exists between a musher and their dogs, and the interplay they must share in order to make their goal of reaching Nome a reality. Bravo for turning out what may be the quintessential Iditarod story, and for crafting what is simply a great Alaskan adventure well told. —Dave Atcheson, author of Dead Reckoning and Hidden Alaska.   Personal, vivid, and authentic, Fast Into The Night lives up to its title. Moderow’s ability to project emotion through her graceful prose had me from the start, and never let go. Through moments of failure and triumph, Moderow’s love for family, her dogs, and the grand adventure of life shine forth.  —Nick Jans, author of A Wolf Called Romeo.   Moderow heard the call of the wild. She writes about racing dogs through the wilderness lyrically like Robert Service writes about seeking adventure in far off places. She heard the challenge, learned the lessons with her dogs, paid the costs, and won the enthralling and inspiring experience. It's a book you can't put down. —Lynne Cox, author of Swimming to Antarctica and Elizabeth, Queen of the Seas.   I expected high adventure from Debbie Moderow’s story of running the Iditarod through a thousand miles of Alaska’s most grueling terrain—and happily, I found it. Moderow beautifully captures the personalities of each dog as she struggles to earn the team’s trust, and she reveals her own vulnerabilities as she learns to trust herself. Crossing the finish line, it turns out, requires resilience as much as endurance, humility more than strength. This is an extraordinary account of a family’s faith in one another—four-leggeds and two-leggeds alike.—Sherry Simpson, author of The Way Winter Comes and Dominion of Bears. "When a memoir magically materializes before your eyes, striking all the right chords, it’s a wonder to behold—truly beautiful. In Fast into the Night that is precisely what Debbie Clarke Moderow graces us with—an elegantly crafted, sumptuous story straight from the author’s heart." -Anchorage Press      "THE SETTING of this compelling title is the frigid Alaskan outback, but the story itself is truly heartwarming. The author writes of her experience competing in the Iditarod and about the exceptional animals that pulled the sled along the thousand mile journey. An adventurous outdoors woman, Moderow interweaves her personal tale of becoming a racer with an account of the race itself. With gut-wrenching candor she shares how she dealt with failure, the death of her parents, and a grueling bout with depression to take part in an event referred to as the “Last Great Race on Earth.” Debbie Moderow’s dedication and love for the Huskies that accompany her from Anchorage to Nome is the soul that drives this insightful and touching memoir." - Cowgirl Magazine

From the Inside Flap

At age forty-seven, a mother of two, Debbie Moderow was not your average musher in the Iditarod, but that’s where she found herself when, less than two hundred miles from the finish line, her dogs decided they didn’t want to run anymore. After all her preparation, after all the careful management of her team, and after running so well for over a week, the huskies balked. But the sting of not completing the race after coming so far was nothing compared to the disappointment Moderow felt in having lost touch with her dogs.   Fast into the Night is the gripping story of Moderow’s journeys along the Iditarod trail with her team of spunky huskies: Taiga and Lil’ Su, Piney and Creek, Nacho and Zeppy, Juliet—and Kanga. Kanga was the headstrong beauty, a fine leader and the object of Moderow’s particular affection. She was to be the key to Moderow’s success on the trail, but her Alpha ways proved troublesome to Moderow and the rest of the team as they set off on their eleven-hundred-mile adventure toward Nome. Their first attempt ended unceremoniously, with a scratch and a crushing blow to Moderow’s confidence in what she knew of her dogs. But Moderow hit the trail again two years later, and despite injuries, dropped dogs, hallucinations, epic storms, flipped sleds, and clashing personalities, she and her team prevailed, their human/canine bond never stronger.   Part adventure, part love story, part inquiry into the mystery of the connection between humans and dogs, Fast into the Night is an exquisitely written memoir of a woman, her dogs, and what can happen when someone puts herself in that place between daring and doubt—and soldiers on.

Until this book, I've had two Iditarod booksI recommended—Winterdance and The Cruelest Miles. Now I have a third. This book is so well written, so full of heart, determination, humor, and insight that you can't help but cheer for the author and her dogs. Debbie Clarke Moderow sets a fast pace that kept me turning pages past bedtime. I most appreciated how Debbie created full-fledged characters from her canine companions. I am also a musher of a backyard kennel, a winter camper, an outdoor adventurer and I thought Debbie got it all so right. She is honest and candid about the highs and lows of managing a team and participating in a crazy, winter sport. And she might be one of the toughest people I've ever met through literature or in life—both mentally and physically. I highly, highly recommend to anyone interested in dogs, winter, wilderness travel, Alaska, dogsledding, and memoir.

Debbie Moderow faced such adversity in both of her Iditarods that when she made it to the finish in Nome in her second attempt I cried. This is an amazing story of her determination to complete the Iditarod despite several serious difficulties a long the way. She truly loves her dogs and always did the right thing for her team, even if it meant dropping some of her leading dogs because they didn't want to run anymore, or allowing her team to take extra long rest breaks at the checkpoints. Debbie's achievement was a true team effort for the animals and humans involved. This book taught me that the community of mushers care about one another and when a musher is in trouble during the race, another team will stop to try and help in any way they can. The dogs are some of the most incredible athletes there are! The strength, endurance, and grit that they showed through difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions helped Debbie reach her goal. What an amazing book!

Every mile brings adventure or heartache. It is the life of a musher and her digs, their strength, their hearts and their drive. They bring out the best...or the worst. 1,000 miles is no easy feat...all the planning in the can still be challenged by the unforgiving climate of the great North. You have to be strong and gracious; wise and daring; smart and spunky and Debbie and her dogs are all of those. Heart stopping, heartbreaking at times, this is one hellava story of ultimate athleticism and triumph.

This book should have been a best seller! I learned so much about the Iditarod from MS. Moderow's perspective. And what better perspective than someone who ran The Great Race twice! She writes well, moves the story along and adds nice touches about her youth. When you know her past, her family life, and her support system, you can see why she had the grit and determination to do this race. The love of her dogs is beautiful too.

If you want to feel like you are personally traveling with a musher on the Iditarod read this book!!!! It is explicit in detail and creates an emotional mood of exhilaration, fear, and suspense!!!

If you love dogs, this is for you. If you love sled dogs this is even better for you. If you are a woman this is a must read. Debbie Clark Moderow had a dream and she went to realize it. She exposes honestly all her trials and triumphs, all her doubts and renewed strengths. Her odyssey reminded me of the favorite children's book The Little Engine That Could.

Great read! Different than many sled dog racing books because it focuses heavily on the author's connection with her dogs. While it is well written and a relaxing read for anyone, if you have ever had a dog with whom you've connected, or had to think about how multiple dogs would interact, you will particularly love this book.

I started it just to learn more about the great race.then I could not put it down. She puts you on the sled, you feel the wind and the cold. The highlights though were the tributes to her mom and dad and to her dog Salt. so much love and feeling. Wonderful book.

The Redrock Chronicles: Saving Wild Utah (Center Books on Space, Place, and Time), by T. H. Watkins

Review

The book is simply essential right now in Utah, a state where the debate over the vast but unprotected canyon country is loud and often uninformed. Watkins is the person for the job. The thesis is direct, wise, and profoundly field-based. Yes, we must protect this resource because we love it, because it is achingly beautiful, and because its destruction is ethically unacceptable. Watkins owns up to his love for this place and I say amen to that! It is always necessary to marshal the economic arguments, the ecological rationales, and such. However, wild country must survive if we are to remember freedom and retain the right to walk in the world with awesome land all around―even if the risk of dying is real. The main purpose here though is to inform as well as give permission to care. What is most original is the combination of geology, geography, law, cultural insights, and clear intention-if we are to save the redrock country we must know all we can about it. (John B. Wright, author of Rocky Mountain Divide: Selling and Saving the West and Montana Ghost Dance: Essays on Land and Life) The Redrock Chronicles captures―for as long as we're willing to hold small, beautiful books in our hands and hearts―the wondrous mystique and complex politics of southern Utah's wild country. (Ron Steffens Bloomsbury Review) The Redrock Chronicles provides an excellent look at a unique geographical area by providing descriptions of the physical and cultural geography of southern Utah. (Lisa DeChano Southeastern Geographer)

Having recently moved back to the mid-west after living in the west for four years, I am amazed at the lack of awareness or information on what many describe as the War in the West. Before you protest that War may be to strong, consider: Employees of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the U.S. Forest Service, and other federal employees in certain areas of the west carry sidearm's and long rifles; government vehicles have been firebombed; anonymous threats directed at government workers are routine; and county commissioners have authorized bulldozing or roads into National Parks and Monuments. Add to this volatile situation the recent decision of the Forest Service to charge a fee to anyone desiring to walk into a national forest and proposals to limit, or eliminate, logging and drilling in large sections of government land in the west and you have the makings of a real, well...war. Oh, did I mention the decision to increase the amount ranchers must pay to graze their cattle on public land? Needless to say, that has been a real popular decision among western ranchers that consider their right to use public lands as sacred. Speaking of sacred, the environmentalist movement had made itself real popular as well by proposing that millions of acres of land in the west be placed in the National Wilderness Preservation System. Such a designation would effectively remove it from any use by the public other than those associated with hiking. No way in or out except by foot, period. Then there is the proposal, gaining credibility and supporters, to decommission Glen Canyon Dam and drain Lake Powell. Some folks in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix have some concerns about this endeavor. While this battle is being waged geographically in the west, it is over public lands that belong to all citizens, including those of us that live a long day's drive to be even close to the action. In looking at the available literature on the myriad of issues in this war I find, as usual, a lot of publications that are long on rhetoric and short on real information or facts. I treasure the book that make's it argument in an honest, heartfelt, straight-forward manner. I may not agree with the opinion or argument of the author but I can respect their honesty and sincerity. Such books are few and far between. Edward Abbey did it with Desert Solitaire. Wallace Stegner did it with Coda: Wilderness Letter in The Sound of Mountain Water. The late T.H. Watkins has done it with The Redrock Chronicles. If you want a concise, upfront, spirited argument for the preservation of an area that many consider ground zero in the environmental war in the west, this is one of the best. Watkins, an award-winning writer, historian, and scholar has written an eloqquent testament tothe redrock country of southern Utah that is destined to become a classic. In just 163 pages, Watkins provides the reader with the history, geology, politics and sense of place in both the written word and with stunning photographs, that capture the mystery and complexity of a land under siege. This is one of those rare books that will capture your heart and spirit regardless of your political leanings in this war. It does so because Watkins has managed to write a love story so unique and touching that it could only come from what he calls the "home of his heart." Southern Utah's wild country is not for the timid, spandex-attired tourist on a carefully planned, scripted vacation. This 130,000 square miles of the Colorado Plateau was chosed by Brigham Young as just the kind of wild, desolate, forbidding place to send his followers in order that they might practice their particular brand of religion in peace and solitude. It is an area where a young wanderer from California could find spiritual comfort and disappear without a trace (Everett Ruess.)It is such a desolate place that during the 1950's the Atomic Energy Commission considered it expendable should fallout from atomic testing in Nevada drift northward, which it did. Why then, all the fuss over such desolate, forbidding land? Because it's there and because it weighs so heavy on the heart to see it destroyed, even on the altar of so-called economic development. Because, as Watkins stated shortly before he died,"I am helplessly addicted to this place, this wondrous geographic puzzle of canyons turning in on themselves, of upthrust plateaus and big blisterlike mountains, of multicolored rocks all layered and bent and broken, of curling rivers dammed by beavers and shaded by grandfather cottonwoods, of horizon-wide sweeps of sunlit emptiness and gracile unknown places where darkness hides and will not tell its name." After reading this gem of a book there will be many readers that will wonder about what was lost with the building of Glen Canyon Dam. One thing is for sure; those that advocate its decommissioning will likely garner some additional supporters. Love stories are like that.
