I read and re-read this book 2-3 times just to absorb all the information it contained. probably keep it handy for ready reference. After reading - it was as if a new level of understanding about myself was reached. BIG doors of understanding flew wide open. Lightbulbs came on! My eyes popped, my jaws dropped, my heart soared. I always suspected or was aware of certain traits in my personality I never really was able to describe or much less understand. Now that I know what they are - this book gives me the tools to cultivate and nurture the essential purpose of my existence. Thank u Dan Millman
I thought this book was interesting. It is based on a type of numerology somewhat different than astrology. The numerology is associated with a counting system that emphasizes time, in terms of cycles of months and years. That is, of course, related to the orbit of the Moon and the orbit of the Earth about the Sun. That these cycles should be related somewhat to our lives is fairly clear. However, there are also two other cycles. The system of assigning numbers to the birth date are associated with cycles of 9 and 12, where the 12 here has no direct relation to monthly cycles. I find this to be pretty strange, and it certainly tends to make one skeptical of the system. However, I have applied the system to myself and a few other people, and it seems to fit pretty accurately. As some critics have assessed, the system is ambiguous to some extent, and might seem to fit for that reason, or perhaps from a placebo effect, if one is looking for some system. The descriptions remind me a bit of the Enneagram, and it is based on the number 9. Although skeptical, I feel that some aspects here are not just accidental or wishful thinking on my part. I plan to keep an open mind and try to apply the system in this book further, to understand it better. I think that there is something about the book that is meaningful and important, and not just a pure fabrication of the author.
It's utterly flabbergasting how true this is. I came to know this book on a cabin retreat where my friend brought it along, not to read it, but to use the pages for illustrations (she picked it up off of some stoop in a bougie Brooklyn neighborhood). Something caught her eye and she started reading it. And then I read my number breakdown and was impressed. I must have shared it with a dozen friends since and am even planning on doing the exercises the author recommends. Looking forward to getting into the positive, all the way!
Before reading this book, I was a total skeptic of numerology. But as I read it, I found it remarkable how it nailed my characteristic, challenges, and life path. My formerly atheist son was even more skeptical, but just reading this book (and working the app) lifted him from his diagnosed condition of moderate to severe depression. He had been referred to a psychiatrist for medication, but before he called for an appointment he read this book and realized how an obsession with perfection and his inability to follow the law of action were blocking his life path and creativity. Within days, he was eating again, putting on weight, working out, playing his guitar, reading other books on spirituality, getting plentiful regular sleep. We are prepared for getting him help from Western medicine should he start another downhill slip, but for now he feels totally rejuvenated and full of self knowledge.
Millman uses a numbering system in this book and The Four Purposes of Life. In all honestly, for me it turns what could have been an enjoyable and mind/heart-opening read into a cognitive effort to figure out the system. I thought maybe I could skip certain sections and avoid all the number-references, but he continues to reference the number system through both of these books. I am sure his devout followers love this stuff, but for someone who is not a follower, it wasn't enjoyable for me. Either way, as with Millman's other books, there is abundant profound wisdom to be gained.
Dan Millman's "Secret" Numerology book. Powerfully accurate. I keep comparing the feeling of reading this with the feeling I first had when I read "Linda Goodman's Love Signs". There is an excitement to reading about yourself using your date of birth, it's so personal and uniquely you that it's hard to at least not do a curiousity look. Dan's writing is direct, clear and he maintains a compassionate tone.I always have one copy (I own four) on a table for guests. It's just too hard to avoid picking it up and starting a conversation. I'm a 35/8 so that's what I would look up in the book (there are other 8s like 26/8 or 17/8 but he gives clear examples and instructions in the beginning chapter.
