The free sample is written simple easily understood English and promises an approachable and instructive book. The rest of the book is written by a person who obviously has no idea how to write clearly and and has no respect for his readers. It is a slapdash effort that gets worse and worse as it nears the end as he struggles to use as many big words as possible in order to achieve his desired page count.I kept working hard to get to a payoff that never came.Like the old joke" there's got to be a pony in here somewhere".Some word uses are frankly irritating such as repeatedly using the the word "nuance" when he means "aspect" to just give one example.I felt cheated. Don't waste your time.

I liked the book, and although I am not entirely sure yet that it will work for me, it gave me some insight as to what goes on with addiction, procrastination and laziness. I was addicted to cigarettes for 13 years and gave them up 40 years ago. On the third try, I was finally successful using a similar program to this with a slow reduction of nicotine. Going 'cold turkey' has never worked for me, but slow change has. Today, I battle with overweight and lack of motivation from too many years of diet failure. I have some other bad habits, like staying up late, and knowing that it is bad just doesn't help me stop doing it. I have a lot of interests in life and I feel the pull of them distracting me from my goals all of the time. What this book did for me was that it helped me to see how the pleasurable things I enjoy were pulling me away from those goals, and the unpleasant things required for accomplishing my goals were so unpleasant in my mind that they were keeping me from doing them. So, I made a list of my goals and a list of the 14 psychological weapons and strategies in this book, and I applied each one to the 4 goals I listed. While I'm finding that I am making progress on the 1st goal, the last 3 haven't gone so well yet, and that being because my goals and life, in general, are very time consuming. I thought I would divide my time up each day into 4 time slots for the 4 goals, but it never seems to work out. However, being able to look over each of the 14 strategies before I start working on one of the goals seems to be helpful. I thought that maybe I'll have to work on only one goal until I've mastered it or formed a new habit. When I quit smoking, I was entirely focused on that one problem, how much I hated it, and had to get rid of it. The problem with diet and exercise is that it takes up even more of my time to focus on and is complicated by arthritis, now that I'm older. I also run out of gas sooner than I did when I was young. Focusing on just one thing makes everything else in my life (like my housework) fall apart, so the problem now becomes a matter of balance. Now, I've given myself a 5th goal, that of having balance in my life. Yeah, I really needed this book. I just hope I have enough years left to make it work.

At the small price for the Kindle edition, I decided to give this book a try.Very disappointed. There is not really any new advice here. Main points seem to be making the action more pleasurable and the procrastination habit less pleasurable, plus controlling environment. But you're left to your own device how to apply that.In the last chapter, the author gives examples where the tips are applied. In all cases, the advice is very (too) short. In some cases, the advice is just silly or unhealthy (sleep on a bad mattress, drink more coffee!).There are no real life examples, no real cases or no user feedback. It's just theoretical.Off course, the advice in the book can be added to whatever you're already doing. But it doesn't offer the insight the title promises.I think Self Discipline in 10 Days by Theodore Bryant is a much better choice. In a strange way, this book is kind of motivating: it seems way to easy to get a book published, I may try my own.

First couple of chapters sounded promising for a somewhat different approach to help with procrastination and other bad habits. But the second half of the book was disappointing when it came to solutions. It left me feeling sucked in and then let down. The beginning text served more as a sales pitch that convinced me to purchase the book--that's about all. Sorry.

Not an enjoyable read. Very thick writing. All theory and no tangible tools to use. Would not buy again.

The book is written like the author did most of his writing in academic situations where he had to stretch 10 pages worth of thoughts into a 50 page paper. Excessively wordy, and uses footnotes simply to add his own thoughts. It's a philosophical treatise on psychology. Meaning he pontificates on his own thoughts or on his observations of other people, rather than accurately describing his own experiences and how he changed.I was looking for solutions on how to stop procrastinating, not somebody's random rambling on what factors cause somebody to procrastinate. Not even sure I will finish the book. It's a good example of why publishing companies screen manuscripts and why editors exist. It's a waste of the $8 I spent on the book. Maybe if it had been only $2 I wouldn't be so annoyed.I mean, who reads a book to get a footnote on the "central limit theorem" from statistics that takes up half a page.

Interesting premise but a little too arrogantly written for my taste. It would have been a thousand times more readable if he'd had a little intellectual humility and put forth his theory/anecdotes forward as just that: theories and anecdotes. Can this help people? Maybe. Was it enjoyable to read? Not really.

The solution to motivational troubles is not grit or willpower, but understanding and introspection. Once you grasp the first principles behind the psychology of motivation, you will be able to intelligently control your actions. Roman's book taught me this, and has been a valuable addition to my life :)

Tatty Munerori was really a master of life, this is one of those timeless works that will always give you wisdom every time you read it. It is best of read with the works of Takuan Soho (unfettered mind), Issai Chozanzi (the demons sermon on martial arts and other tales), the book of five rings (Miyamoto Musashi) and Sun Tzu (the art of war). Timeless wisdom from a timeless master.

The translation of Yagyu Munenori's The Life-Giving Sword by William Scott Wilson is an excellent companion text to Musashi's Go Rin No Sho. Like it, this text can - indeed must - be read a number of times, separated by deep reflection, if one is to grasp its deepest essence. Wilson's lengthy and excellent Introduction is a powerful preface to the text's primary writing.Hagakure is another text of this caliber that comes to mind. I happen to believe that the great truths in life were discovered long ago, and simply remain to be rediscovered and allowed to flow into today's contemporary circumstances. The Life-Giving Sword contains immutable truths that can move ones understanding toward the essence of combat/no-combat behavior. I found one passage in particular to be inspiring:"When you have run the length of various practices and none of those practices remain in your mind, that very lack of mind itself is the heart of "all things". When you have exhaustively learned the various practices and techniques and made great efforts in disciplined training, there will be action in your arms, legs, and body, but none in your mind; you will have distanced yourself from training, but will not be in opposition to it, and you will have freedom in whatever techniques you perform. You yourself will be unaware of where your mind is, and neither demons nor heresies will be able to find it. Training is done for the purpose of reaching this state. With successful training, training falls away. This is the secret principle toward which all Ways progressI believe that a reader who has many years of martial arts' study "under his belt" will feel a deep emotional and intellectual kinship with the words written so long ago by Munenori and so ably translated and back grounded by Author Wilson. Truly a teacher for the ages.

Wonderful, informative historical stories

Good book. It is smaller than expected.

For anyone interested in the inner workings of the Japanese swordsmanship.Yagyu Munenori was a very interesting man - wise and skillful. He held a major administrative post by several Shoguns and was an accepted master and a personal fencing master to the Shogun.Even though now we may argue how important Zen Buddhism is to the study of the martial arts and swordsmanship in particular, at the time of writing of the treatise it was without a doubt that a practitioner had to study Zen along with the study of the bujutsu, or the martial art. Not just a resonance of fashion, the Zen philosophy and lifestyle that went along with it held a special place in the hearts of the warrior class. Munenori was not an exeption but perhaps one of its greatest proponents. We must look deep into what this book has to offer, and although some of the technique descriptions are rather cryptic, which makes them kind of useless without an "oral transmission", others are clearly the work of a martial arts' quiet sage, and go far beyond "barbaric" strength. I am confident that this book will take up a special spot on your book shelf.

First and foremost this is not a story for entertainment nor is it a manual that will teach you how to use a sword. This is a deeply philosophical investigation into the Zen mind required to master the sword. Experienced practitioners will get the most out of it. Beginners will stumble through it and most of the value will be lost. It requires many reads and deep contemplation together with practice to really come to life. The first 60-pages of the book are very interesting, as Wilson takes us through a brief synopsis of the life and times of Munenori with some descriptions of his character and people he associated with. Munenori was a very colorful character who was a teacher and adviser to shoguns, winning the post against Musashi himself. The Yagyu clan is an old ninja family who live in the mountains outside Nara. Their village is surrounded by rice paddies and is difficult to approach. At one point Musashi traveled there to challenge Munenori (who was conveniently not present) and instead wound up dueling and killing a master of the kusurigama, a sickle with a chain and weight on the end and a common ninja weapon. The actual Life Giving Sword is about 70-pages long and is mostly a philosophical zen treaty with application for any martial art, but geared to the Way of the sword. Also included are 28 prints from the Illustrated Catalog of the Shinkage-ryu, which offers brief descriptions of the techniques and includes the "Tengu Series".This is an essential book for any sword practitioner, or anyone involved in the martial arts. I can't recommend it enough.

Very deep and insightful. A must have for those who love Japanese martial arts and buddhism.

Donald Ross, one of Scotland's great exports to America, has designed or remodeled some of the most magnificent and challenging courses on the planet. His commentaries on the rationale behind his architecture, penned before World War I but only recently rediscovered, present a continuous fairway of graceful and thoughtful insights into the game. Is there a golfer alive who can't make use of such gems as "Holes should be trapped so that par golf depends upon skill rather than upon strength," or "Hazards are placed so as to force a (golfer) to use judgment and to exercise mental control in making the correct shot"?

I really enjoyed this book. It is dated but still has resonance. Mr. Ross talks about golf course design and gives pictured examples of good and bad designs. It identifies the courses around the U.S. that he has designed or improved. This is not a golf instruction book, fascinating none the less

Great book! I lied looking into the reasons why and why not from an architects standpoint! One of the greatest golf course architects ever

Finally someone has put together a wonderful collection of Mr. Ross thoughts on golf. Nicely done and a easy read!

Sparsely written notes from such a productive architect. Wish there was much more. But very meaningful and to the point.

of courses....this is a must read book. It follows the outline of a book that the subject wrote years earlier, but never published. The historic angles are very interesting. Good stuff for those interested in the history of early course design work....Enjoy....

In the introduction to this book, Donald Ross's daughter says, ". . .he approached every new course with the idea that the golf player, champion or duffer, should complete his round challenged by the layout and enriched by the beauty of nature."In his career, Donald Ross designed more than 400 courses in the United States. His most famous is Pinehurst No. 2, considered one of the ultimate tests of tournament golf. This book was created from an old manuscript Mr. Ross wrote in 1914 that was never published, intended as a guide to future golf architects, supplemented with other published commentaries by and about Ross.Mr. Ross had an unusual background for a golf course architect. In a time when engineers usually designed and built the courses, he had served as the pro and greenskeeper at Dornoch in Scotland, after training at St. Andrews with Old Tom Morris and at Carnoustie. The lure of much higher income and the opportunity to build lots of golf courses drew him to the United States with his first job of rebuilding Oakley in Watertown, Massachusetts. Here are some of the ideas he shares in the book:"These are my standards to laying out a golf course. Make each hole a different problem. So arrange it that each stroke must be made with full concentration and attention necessary to good golf. Build each hole in such a manner that it wastes none of the ground at my disposal, and takes advantage of every possibility I see." A sandy loamy soal is best, with very little humus. This gives you better playing conditions and a longer season. Long Island and Cape Cod are best. Avoid clay soils because they are hard to drain. Unfortunately, most land around major cities is clay soiled. Favor fan-shaped and oblong tracts of land so that the clubhouse can be returned to with little wasted land after 9 holes. Start out with two or more easy holes. Favor par 4s unless people insist on par 5s. Par 4s make a better test, especially 425-450 yard ones. On par 5s, provide two paths to the green -- one for reaching in 2 and one for reaching in 3. "Select your putting green locations, if possible, to give desirable undulating surfaces." "Make all the short holes difficult." "The holes should be trapped so that par golf depends on skill rather than physical strength." "Bunkers should so be placed as to be clearly in view, and in such locations as to make all classes of golfers think." He recommends designing from the land, rather than on paper. He also suggests building the best few holes the land will allow, because golfers are attracted and retained by memories of great and challenging holes. He ends humbly with "I am not much of a writer. I find my thoughts run far ahead of my hand and figures when I sit down to write." There are about 60 pages in the book that will be valuable to architects and greenskeepers, but will not do much for golfers. You may choose to skip those. The book lists the known Donald Ross courses, and has many beautiful black and white photographs and illustrations. One of the pleasures of reading this book for me relates to having played on many Donald Ross courses, and belonging to a country club (Brae Burn in West Newton, Massachusetts) that has a Donald Ross course. The book features 3 photographs from our course (the 1st, 2nd, and 17th holes). I will certainly have many new thoughts whenever I play this course after reading this interesting book. To golf's pleasures, I can now add thinking about what the architect was trying to accomplish.I also came away with a greater appreciation for Donald Ross, because he was trying to make golf more challenging and less frustrating for the average club golfer like me. This made me want to play many more Donald Ross courses in the future. I hope you have that reaction, too.Use this book to help you pick courses that will improve your enjoyment of golf! What else do you enjoy doing where the designer or architect makes a difference to you?If you like this book, there is a new book out with color photographs of 18 of Mr. Ross's finest holes that you should see entitled: Golf as It Was Meant to Be Played which I also reviewed.

This book is timeless. Written over fifty years ago the text and accompanying photos and sketches are well done. If you want to understand a Donald Ross Golf Course then you need to read this book. The photographs are from a time gone by - you can picture yourself there.

Excellent book by Donald Ross, the best golf course designer ever.
