With death dominating the news, due to the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, and the inevitable linkage to the Middle East, I decided that a useful counterpoint would be a review of a very famous celebration of life that also originated from the same region. When Europe was in its “Dark Ages,” the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a polymath shined in Persia (modern-day Iran). Omar Khayyam was a mathematician and astronomer, and wrote numerous treatises on mechanics, geography, mineralogy, and an extremely influential one on algebra. His “Rubaiyat” demonstrates that he was much more than what might be dubbed “a Middle Ages nerd.”The Rubaiyat is a series of quatrains (four lines of verse). Fittingly enough, Khayyam opens with the beginning of the day, or, as he phrases it much more poetically: “And Lo! The Hunter of the East has caught The Sultan’s Turret in a Noose of Light.” Woven throughout this work is the very transient nature of life… that we must make the very best of every day that we have been given. He states that sentiment, well, much more memorably: “Come, fill the Cup, and in the Fire of Spring; The Winter Garment of Repentance fling; The Bird of Time has but a little way; To fly-and Lo! The Bird is on the Wing.”I had long admired the Gertrude Bell, and her willingness to explore the Middle East around the commencement of the 20th century. She too had a poetic “eye” for the desert regions, and described them lovingly in The Desert and the Sown: Travels in Palestine and Syria. I had no idea that she had borrowed her title from one of Khayyam’s quatrains, specifically: “With me along some Strip of Herbage strown; That just divides the desert from the sown; Where name of Slave and Sultan scarce is known; And pity Sultan Mahmud on his Throne.” Certainly a way of celebrating the frontier, far from political concerns.Khayyam successfully identified the four essential ingredients of life, in verse that has been repeated in many fashions, and varying formats: “Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough; A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse and Thou; Beside me singing in the Wilderness; And Wilderness is Paradise Now.” Amazon is currently proclaiming “solidarité” (with the people of France) and so shall I, and change the aforementioned “Thou” to “Toi.” And note that the natural world beckons. Never forgetting the necessity, nay, the imperative to hurry, for: “The Worldly Hope men set their Hearts upon; Turns Ashes- or it prospers; and anon; Like Snow upon the Desert’s dusty Face; Lighting a little Hour or two – is gone.”The translation is by the Orientalist, Edward Fitzgerald. This edition is accompanied by one of those soporific introductions that debate the validity and attributions of the various quatrains. Skip! Yes, in the imperative. Concentrate once, twice and three times on the fresh baked bread under the tree, the all-important Toi, and don’t let the ants, as in introduction, spoil the picnic. 5-stars.

I sometimes think that never blows so redThe rose as were some buried Cæsar bled; That every Hyacinth the garden wearsDropt in its lap from some once lovely headI originally ordered this because I learned about the mysterious case of the Somerton man. "tamám shud" was printed on a scrap of paper found months later in the fob pocket of the man's trousers. The scrap had been torn from the final page of a copy of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. I thought I would get some minimalistic paper back book but instead got an amazing, beautiful copy with fantastic illustrations.

Little money, great poetry.--Both the first (original, initial) and last (fifth) Fitzgerald-Khayyam Rubiyat are here. In my opinion, the first version is the most breath-taking and the fifth less so, like the King James' Bible compared to the New American Standard. One is poetry that reaches the stars and the other is prose.--The size and heft both are small. This paperback fits into a jeans pocket or small bag, the better to bring underneath some bough with (preferrably) a loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and Thou.--The cover is from, I believe, the gorgeous Dulac fully illustrated version. It is intended (again, I think) for the quatrain urging us to live fully NOW and when the dark glass comes to us, to reach for it complete and undismayed. I once mortgaged the cat to buy the superb 1901 edition printed on heaviest paper, every page magnificently illustrated by Edmund Sullivan, leather bound, with an enlightening long introduction by Fitzgerald. The same poems, O reader, however (first and fifth version) for about 2% of the price.ANY READER ALERTS? None. Just expect paperback quality, not legacy quality in size, binding, and illustration. After the second jar of wine and enough Thou, it may not matter. And expect also the similarity between Horac3e writing in about 20 AD and Khayyam/Fitzgerlad in about 1,000 AD and 1870 AD. HIGHLY recommended.NOTE PLEASE: The Dover THRIFT EDITION is reviewed. Other editions & versions can have different features such as introductory essays and paper quality. The Dover Thrift Edition is high end for the poetry but low end for paper, size, and extras, which make it a fine value if it's the poetry in a smaller format the reader wishes.

If You Had Your Birthday Party on the Moon, by Joyce Lapin Simona Ceccarelli

Review

“Why celebrate for just 24 hours on Earth when our nearest neighbor has a 709-hour day? Sure, balloons won't float and the near lack of atmosphere also means that everyone has to wear special suits—but the low gravity makes gymnastics a snap, it's easy to catch the candy as it falls from the piñata, and a batted baseball really travels! Expanding on the fanciful bits with boxed blocks of factual commentary, Lapin accurately describes lunar conditions—explaining, for instance, why the sky is black rather than blue and noting that earthshine is 40 times brighter than moonglow—while suggesting expeditions to check out craters and maria, having a scavenger hunt to track down artifacts left by the Apollo astronauts (two golf balls, 12 pairs of space boots, a rumored ‘rude drawing’), and chowing down on ‘a Space Station favorite,’ chocolate-pudding cake squeezed from a foil pouch. Ceccarelli adds jolly notes aplenty with painted scenes of young partiers (an inclusive lot, featuring one with Asian features and several people of color) zinging exuberantly around in zero gravity, cavorting or making dust angels on the lunar surface, and gathering back at their spacecraft as a pizza-delivery rocket lands nearby before they all blast off for home. The author reserves generous slices of print and web resources at the end for readers who couldn't make the voyage. A prime candidate for a destination party.” —Kirkus

How surprised I was, reading my first book by Francine Rivers. I didn’t expect a book about faith in Jesus Christ. A book about early Christianity. I followed all the characters easily and almost felt like I was hovering overhead watching what was unfolding. I read the book along with the narrative. I love how he read it, but I did speed it up to 1.25 as the book got more and more exciting, I couldn’t wait to get to the next chapter to see what would happen next. I really enjoyed this book and right now I’m going to start the next in the series!

Francine is one of my favorite authors. She has the ability to draw me and make me feel like I am IN the story. This book, in particular, is my very favorite. Such a deep, thought provoking story that leaves you breathless (literally). It is NOT recommended that you finish this book without the second one readily available.A classic book I will read again and again for the rest of my life!

I sensed a faint presence of an all-knowing, all-present God in the midst of the multi-faced evils of the great deceiver. It was a-bit draining to spend much of this first episode with Julia (and her selfish-loves), Marcus, their parents, and Attretus, all 'faithful' followers of other gods. So much time and story line was spent on these characters that I wondered if Haddasah would ever have support in her faith. The climax left me wondering, 'Is this the end of the faithful servant Haddasah!' I guess I'll have to find out in the sequel.

This book series has blessed my life for so many years now. I have read all 3 at least a dozen times, and each time I glean something new and moving. Francine Rivers is an outstanding author, who truly does her research and takes time choosing her words. The moments occurring in this story are hard to read in the most beautiful way; they pain the heart with truth and reality, moving you deeply over and over again. The characters are so beautifully real, I feel I know them very personally. I recommend this book to male or female, Christian or not. My one warning is that there is most definitely mature historical content, so be cautious for younger readers. But then when your grow a little older- read it!

This was a very enjoyable book, and I look forward to reading the next two in the series. I've learned so much about Roman society and gladiators. The research into everyday life, from what their homes looked like to what they ate, made the story come alive. I was especially interested in what the arena games were all about. I learned how gladiators trained, what their weapons and attire were called and the types of gladiators that fought. At times, when the book seemed brutal, I had to remember how brutal these historical times were. Life was cheap entertainment for the masses if you were a slave or a prisoner. Through the book, I loved seeing what life might have been like for a survivor of the Roman invasion of Jerusalem - in particular, a Christian Jew.. What the character Hadassah endures, might very well have happened. Her faith sees her through many trials. We learn what faithfulness and long suffering are all about by watching her. She is indeed the humble heroine of this novel.

Excellent book! This book takes you right back to the center of history shortly after the resurrection of Christ. Rivers puts bible history in a context that you visualize and remember. It makes it fun to read the bible. When you sit down to read Paul's letters for example, where he warns about the temples and the false gods, Rivers has taken you on a journey through the temples in several cities and you witness the destruction of many lives of those who believe in these false gods, so you understand what Paul is talking about. You have a better bite of history to grasp what he is teaching you.And Hadassah, if we could all be like her, trusting God, even in the hard times. I love the example Rivers has given us here, not throwing Christianity in the reader's face, but perfectly illustrating who Christ is. Rivers gives us a lovely character in Hadassah. She quietly faces all that comes at her: death, life, persecution, illness, even love, with a bold strength. Knowing she is covered by the blood of Christ and she is never alone. If you are looking for a way to get excited about reading the bible, Rivers presents a visual launching pad. A Voice in The Wind, is set in a very bloody time period, so this book is not meant for the squeamish. However, Rivers does historical fiction with class; telling the story without dwelling on the violence. But the reason you read this story is because of a little girl named Hadassah. She vaults herself beyond it all. It is because of Hadassah that I recommend this book to all. You will read this book more than once. Read it. Allow it to inspire you as it did me. And buy it for someone else to enjoy. May we all be able to have the faith and strength of Hadassah in the world ahead.

This book draws the reader into personal reflection and consideration of true belief. Even as the brutality and depravity of men and women come alive in description, so does the very real meaning of belief in Christ and acceptance of divine will. This book does not preach. It lets the reader interpret as they wish.

A beautifully haunting story of a young woman's spiritual growth and journey. If you are an unbeliever than you will have a hard time understanding the teachings and the beauty of the story. God does not allow us to go through hardtimes without a reason. Hadassah is proof that everything happens in God's timing. This story does parallel Ancient Rome with modern society and that is simply because history does repeat itself. America needs to wake up and turn back to the word of God. There are 3 books in this series and after reading book 1 you will want to immediately read the second book.
