Mr. Ambrose took a very complicated, complex, compelling part of world history and conveyed it in easy to follow timeline, while still providing both the tactical and strategic overview of the war as we were lead through a tremendous accounting of many firefights within portions of countless battles. This is, in of itself, a significant achievement considering the breadth and depth involved in the scope of the war. The real and, hopefully, everlasting impact of his book involves providing non- soldiers a glimpse into what the soldiers endured, felt and lost while freeing a large portion of Europe. And to a lesser extent what impacts the civilians in Europe felt. The US POPULATION has not personally witnessed nor felt the impacts of war since the Civil War. This book provides as real a picture into horror of war on a personal level without being over dramatic or overly gory. The simple, straightforward, story telling style provides all the power of what is important.Read this book more than once. Reread it in five years. Let us never forget what war is, does, and destroys. Let us never forget the supreme sacrifice war requires. Let us not forget the concept of duty as it relates to war: nothing in civilian life compares. Let us always remember and cherish the lasting freedom provided by the prior generation.This is, in my opinion, what the book achieves. I think it is what veterans want us to remember.

This is arguably the best book ever written for those whom history is not their favorite topic to read. Ambrose's style tells the story like a novel, while including sufficient facts and detail history junkies like me will still appreciate.He answered one question I always had: Were the medics not shot at by either side? [no, I am not telling :) ]Even those whom "reading is not their thing" will likely find the stories that unfolds to be engrossing.If you have a book report on WWII due, read this. It will be the easiest one you ever wrote.

One of my favorite books of WWl It gets into the detail of the average soldier's life during the war.

Great book about the WWII European Theatre of Operations (ETO). Stories of war by Allied AND German soldiers. It also has photographs. Even though it is á pretty lengthy book, i hated to reach the end. Stephen Ambrose has done it again. I'm going to read this again on Memorial Day. You owe it to yourself. To read it and see what your fathers and grandfathers sacrificed so you could be free and beech about President Obama taxes, healthcare, and all the other trivial things haters whine about. Just thank God YOU didn't have to go through it. Great read. Thanks to Mr. Ambrose for writing it, and thanks to all the brave men and women who served. All gave some, but some gave all. We salute you. AND THANKS TO ALL OF OUR BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHO PUT THEMSELVES IN HARM'S WAY EVERYDAY TO DEFEND US!

Having been in awe of WWII combat soldiers since I was a boy, over 55 years ago, this is the first "big" book I have read about WWII combat soldiers... so I have nothing to compare it to.But it is a great book, and having read it I am even much more in awe of them, their courage, toughness, character, and more.Stephen E. Ambrose did a great job with this book.

No generation has done more to preserve the American way of life than this one. From the Depression into an unwanted war and then rebuilding both America and its enemies' homelands after victory, these people stand tall and alone atop the annals of history.This book captures the essence of the courage and sacrifice of these men and women. If that were it's only achievement, it would still be an important work. But the more significant contribution to humankind is the capturing and recording of these memories and emotions before these aging warriors pass on. Known for their stoic silence and humility, Ambrose has unlocked their minds and found a way in. They share experiences with him that they rarely spoke about to their own families. And in writing and publishing such works, he has loosened the lips of many more reluctant warriors who are more willing to tell their compelling stories than ever before.With less and less of the history of World War II being taught in schools, this vehicle will educate present and future generations with its quick and entertaining style, copious maps and pictures. It is fully indexed and generously noted with scores of attributions.This work, among his many others, is a serious and compelling addition to history. I lived in France 15 years after the war ended. I saw first hand, some of the incredible destruction wrought as the Allies fought their way into Germany. In Nancy, a next door neighbor and I found bones (both of us were under 10) near a wrecked jeep which turned out to be a couple of GIs. I could not understand why they weren't found sooner, until I understood the incredible scale of the war years after. This is a superb view of the conflict from the dog faces' view - history needs this view of "our" war, compared to the typical European or Asian land war typified by the Russian Front.

This book is the best I've read about the ground war from D-Day onwards in the Western Theatre of World War Two. On the front lines, in the dirt, blood and total terror of what the cost of war really is. Read this first or last if you want to know what happened in Europe to defeat the enemies of freedom. Riveting.

Fernholz does a great job at developing a compelling narrative about the brief history of New Space. While a large extent of the book is centered around the "rocket billionaires", a wider perspective on the context in which commercial space has evolved in recent years is also provided. I especially enjoyed learning about how NASA has changed in response to the pioneerism of Musk and Bezos. The author makes no effort to hide his admiration for SpaceX and Blue Origin, which might be reflected in his depiction of their more established competitors. Biased or not, that does not compromise the quality of a well-researched book mostly based on first-hand interviews. Without any doubt, a mandatory reading for anyone interested in New Space that also happens to be entertaining for a broader audience.

Highly readable account of the current business of space exploration. As a (retired) finance professor, I greatly appreciated the fairly detailed financial analysis. As a physics graduate, I wish there had been more about the physics involved in spacecraft development. Whilst I'm happy to allot 5* to this, I do wonder whether the very favourable light shone on SpaceX, compared with its competitors, is because (a) SpaceX genuinely deserve this, or (b) the much greater flow of information and access from that company has had an effect.

Very interesting read. Written so it is fun to read. Lots of information dished up without getting boring.

Good reading. Private money is what's needed.

My son loved this book

Great overview/summary of the private space industry

I have been slightly aware of these private space companies like SpaceX for some time, and definitely rooting for them in principle. The mostly successful launch of the Falcon Heavy rocket last month sure grabbed my attention... especially the landing of the two booster rockets, which appeared like something out of science fiction and was the most stunning demonstration of technology I have seen in decades. Of course, putting that car into orbit around the sun will forever be a legendary publicity stunt for both SpaceX and Tesla, but it also put an undeniable spotlight on the fact that it was a private company led by one extraordinary man who accomplished this.Well this book does not cover that most recent event, but it does give the reader a great understanding of both Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, plus a lot of historical/political background about NASA, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance, and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic. The book is pretty well written and I found it exciting to read.While NASA has done some very good work in space exploration, I feel that ultimately the future lies in the commercialization of space. I am very glad that these companies are finally getting past the seemingly insurmountable hurdles that previously limited space exploration only to governmental efforts. This book documents what I believe to be a pivotal moment in human history.

I enjoyed Rocket Billionaires: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and the new space race more for the behind the scenes view of the space industry, both public and private. The book is an easy read, and Tim Fernholz has an engaging style. There is a little bit of science and engineering, as challenges and failures are discussed. Is is essentially a brief history of rocketry in the US, with the occasional anecdote about the personalities involved. I was surprised to discover how quickly the private enterprises were put together, and surpassed hte products offered by the two (now one) megaliths which has always (historically) provided the rockets ordered by both the Government and private industry. Havinmg learned of hte merger in this book, I am especially happy that Musk and Bezos have entered the industry and shaken it up a bit. We have not seen a lot in the way of space exploration in recent years, and I now understand a good deal more about why. I made many highlights, bookmarks, and screenshots because so much information has resonated with me, pulling my heartstrings. The book is inspiring, but it also comes with practical action steps.The immediate application I had today was – do the one thing I resist, first. So I focused the first 3 hours of my time in the morning, just to do that one thing I needed to do but procrastinated for as long as I remember. The feeling of accomplishment afterward made me feel so good about myself, the rest of my day becomes joyful. Then I did one thing that I feared of rejection. Although I don’t have an answer yet, I am happy that I did it. There are so many gold nuggets and tactics I can implement, I plan to go back to the book again and implement more, especially in the self-discovery part - the purpose of life exercise, and setting goals. I really like the conclusion, “You’re either living an empowered lifestyle governed by intentional action, or you exist to service someone else’s agenda.” Why not build a life by my own design?

I have had the pleasure to read many of the Author's books and The Master of Achievement is his best book yet. The nine principles were eye opening and very helpful towards achieving what you want in life. I also liked how the 16 characteristics can be integrated into our daily lives. The Author also covers how to eliminate distractions and how to create positive habits to empower our lives. This book is full of great information and is very positive and encouraging for the reader. I highly recommend adding this book to your collection.
