This is an important and very readable book. This is a HUGE component in reversing climate change, and not enough people are talking about it.ORGANIC FARMERS AND GARDENERS: PLEASE TAKE THIS NEXT, PLANET-SAVING STEP! You'll save water, as well.Read Gaia's Garden to learn how - another wonderful book.I've been an organic garden forever, but I learned a lot that I wish CSA farmers would learn about the damage tilling does, in terms of climate change and each consumer's carbon footprint.I now practice no-till gardening, an expansion of Ruth Stout's approach 50 years ago - mulch the bejeezus out of your soil, feed worms and germs. Only dig where you need to (I use a triangular hand-hoe - Ken Ho, I think it's called, which also slices weeds off paths and elsewhere, just below the surface), chop up any yard waste on the spot and add to the mulch along with any weeds, which pull easily out of the loose mulch and soil underneath. Also, Hugelkulture, where you put a log at the base of a raised be, cover it with yard waste, leaves, and soil, and plant over the whole works, or next to it. You DON'T HAVE TO WATER IT, according to many testimonies. I'm just starting to use this - I live where we have hot, dry summers and have already cut back markedly on watering with mulching and making swales of various sizes downhill from all my plantings, which I fill with leaves, bark, twigs, etc. They serve as paths and also as long-term water storage.Tilled soil, on the other hand, releases carbon into the atmosphere (which is why the soil eventually gets depleted and "less-black"), destroys mycorrhyzae, worms, and other soil life, and lets water evaporate instead of return to the aquifers and hydrate plants.

Gardening magazines have told the same story for decades: someone buys a piece of land that is mostly sand orgravel, and then the gardener brings it back to life by mixing in manure, compost and cover crops. And one day,the worms appear, a signal that the soil has become a rich and fertile, water-retaining, bed of nourishment forhealthy and robust crops, whether flowers or food.On our own small plots of land, this is an act of healing and renewal. And Kristin Ohlson's book tells thesame story, that the vast expanses of grassland exploited for centuries, and now turned or turning into desert, can alsobe healed and renewed the same way. But to accept the stories of the heroes she shares, is a monumental paradigm shift. We have to let go of the entrenched thinking that humans know best and return to a partnership with nature.A central figure in this book is Allan Savory, who understood decades ago that grasslands do not renew themselves, but thatthe fertility that was so prized by pioneers was the result of the massive migrations of the buffalo, who crossed the prairies, stirring and fertilizing the earth where they grazed, and then moving on. Hot sun and low rainfall in the dry seasons did notmatter, because the earth had become a big sponge, retaining water through drought, renewing the water table, able to sustain life.Ohlson provides a great introduction to Savory's work, which has now become a practice amongst enlightened farmersand ranchers around the globe. I knew about Savory, but I did not know of the other heroes--soil scientists and farmerswho have been also walking a similar path. How will the soil save us? Ohlson's book explains why healing the soil is the number one way to sequester carbon and remove itfrom our atmosphere.Monsanto claims to hold the key to survival in the years to come, but its science could not be more wrong. Read this book andfind out why healing the soil is the only true choice for the future, because by healing the soil, there is the greatest chance thatwe can reverse climate change in our children's lifetimes.

In reading "The Soil Will Save Us" it seemed to me that a better title would have been "How We Will Save the Soil". There is a lot of good information about soil conservation, but you don't find out until the last two pages about the potential impact of soil health on climate change -- and even those two pages seem have to be written almost as an afterthought. The information that the book presents on soil and climate is just the tip of the iceberg; for example, see the video athttp://rodaleinstitute.org/regenerative-organic-agriculture-and-climate-change/.The book is a good primer on the role of microbes -- fungi and bacteria -- in maintaining soil health and sequestering organic carbon. But it neglects other equally important soil conservation and sequestration methods such as remineralization. The author describes the hard clay in her back yard as an example of "soil with few microbial aggregates", but a soil test would probably pinpoint the problem as excess magnesium requiring addition of calcium to loosen the soil. Minerals are the stuff of which microbes are made, and soil fertility and plant health can be dramatically improved by addition of basalt rock dust or sea minerals.remineralize.orghttp://www.motherearthnews.com/organic-gardening/supercharge-your-soil-with-minerals-zbcz1411.aspx#axzz3JcWEptD0The book discusses the role of livestock in soil remediation. This is a controversial topic, in part because cattle are a major source of atmospheric methane. But anaerobic digesters can perform the same function as cow's stomachs on an industrial scale, without methane emissions, while providing useful energy co-generation:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eXRfynD-M8The book also neglects biochar, one of the most effective mechanisms for permanently sequestering carbon, improving soil fertility, and creating liquid fuels:http://climatestate.com/2014/02/17/biochar-the-next-stage-in-climate-action/The book is a good introduction to soil and climate, but the interested reader should explore other information sources that better convey the full potential of land use for climate stabilization.

[1] Congratulations! You have in your hands a copy of Neil Patrick Harris' autobiography. If you eagerly crack it open and begin reading, continue to paragraph [2]. If this was a gift and you dislike Neil Patrick Harris for whatever (obviously not homophobic because what century are we in!) reasons, skip to paragraph [5].[2] You open the book! It smells like new book smell. But it's a choose-your-own-adventure?! Whaaaaaat? If you read the book as intended, making choices and skipping around as you go, experiencing life at its fullest AS NEIL, continue to paragraph [3]. If you decide to read straight through, skip to paragraph [4].[3] You've read the book! You experienced life as Neil! You got a plum gig as a kid star with good luck and hard work, discovered you liked boys and married the cutest one of all, had a couple of even cuter kids, did some magic tricks, drank some carefully crafted cocktails, and hosted the Tonys lots of times. You even got in a couple of jabs at some d-bags. If you had the time of your life (and who wouldn't, you're NEIL!), skip to paragraph [6]. If you hated the book (and therefore obviously hate FUN), skip to paragraph [5].[4] FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Nah, actually it's okay. I mean, you miss out on some of the fun, but as long as you have your short term memory in tact and the ability to maintain logical consistency in your head, you get through the book just fine. If despite having no respect for the rules you had an awesome time reading about Neil, skip to paragraph [6]. If this totally ruined the book for you, continue to paragraph [5].[5] This book is the WORST. You go to click the first star (Because why won't this thing let you give it NO STARS? GEEZ.), but just as you do, some unknown, potentially mystical force bumps your shoulder and your hand slips on the mouse. FIVE STARS. [The end!][6] This book is SERIOUSLY AMAZING. It was so fun, and everyone should be Neil Patrick Harris. You kind of wish you could keep being him, actually. FIVE STARS! If, after spending this quality time with Neil you want to read about another well-adjusted gay man with an awesome life, go get a copy of Anything Goes: My Autobiography by John Barrowman. If instead you want to spend MORE quality time with Neil, fire up Hulu and watch all 97 episode of Doogie Howser in a row. [The end!]

When this originally came out, I really wanted to pick it up, but despite seeing a bunch of levitating pics on Twitter around the release date I never did end up getting one. Then, my local library did this neat thing where after filling out a long questionnaire, one of the librarians would give me a list of book recommendations. This was one of the several books on that list so I decided to finally pick up a copy!Neil Patrick Harris is an amazing man—I remember watching Doogie Howser, M.D. when I was a kid; I've seen all of How I Met Your Mother and all three Harold & Kumar films; I've seen each of Tony Awards that he's hosted; I follow him on Twitter so I know about David and Gideon and Harper; but I knew there had to be a lot behind NPH that this book would show me.To read what I liked about this book, go to paragraph A.To read what I didn't like, go to paragraph C.To read about some frustrating parts, go to paragraph B.A) The book is clever in its concept. Who hasn't read a bunch of those Choose Your Own Adventure stories in their childhood? When using this concept with an autobiography, you get to choose what part of the life you want to go to. I did my best to avoid the ending for a while (while at the same time sometimes going down dead ends to get some of the quick "bad" endings out of the way) but I used a pencil to mark off pages I read (I'm a bit OCD so I wanted to make sure I read everything). In classic CYOA mode, I often kept my finger in the book so I could flip back if I chose a bad path.B) Because my OCD tendencies had me mark off each page as I read them, when I got near the end, I was able to go back and check which paths I didn't follow (to make sure I read everything). Unfortunately, I found five "chapters" that I couldn't get to. Two of these chapters were meant to be "hidden" (e.g. they mentioned how no other page led to this one). Two of them I think were impossible to get to because of typos. The final chapter was an option in one of the two typo chapters (I think the first option on page 23 should reference page 38, not page 39 and the third option on page 110 should reference page 191, not page 194). One other minor frustration was the Cryptic Crossword on page 150. There were several chapters that gave you a chance to flex your mind, but I've never been that good with Cryptic Crosswords. I'm surprised there weren't any instructions (since Cryptic Crosswords are more well known in the UK and aren't too popular in the US) but luckily I've seen them before. While reading the book, I was only able to get about three of the answers. After finishing the book, I had to spend about an hour really attacking the clues to complete the list. But then, when I tried placing the answers into the crossword grid, I found that there was one too few spaces! Technically two of the 4-letter answers could fit in the same part of the grid (neither having any impact on the final answer) but still—weird to create a puzzle without one unique solution.C) There were some parts of the story I felt were rushed through just because none of the chapters could really be more than a half dozen or so pages. I would have liked more than a short chapter about the Magic Castle (maybe because I'm lucky enough to have gotten inside it, I would have loved to hear more about what he does as President). Also, I think it would have been better as a traditional chronological biography. As I read the book jumping back and forth it was hard to get too invested in his life. NPH is a decent writer (although several chapters were ghost- or obviously-written by friends) but the gimmick was sort of played out after a few chapters.I'm glad I read it, and I won't hold it against my librarian (after all I did want to read it so it wasn't a bad suggestion, just a slightly disappointing one).

Although I did not make use of the unique "choose your own" feature (I am strictly a linear thinker when it comes to reading something like this, where I don't want to miss a single bit of this, even by accident), I loved reading about his life and the unusual sense of humor (and humility) he brings to describing his life. He was a favorite of mine from the Doogie Howser days, and I followed him right through the HIMYM years. The only thing I wish for (that's not in this book) is the secret to becoming his friend and hanging out with him, David, and Elton John, because that sounds AWESOME. Seriously, though, he is a genuinely nice guy who managed to avoid the worst Hollywood has to offer and who has become one-fourth of a close and loving family of his own. It's a rare thing in Hollywood to see someone who is self-aware and lucky enough to find someone who actually loves the real him. (I am a little jealous of his 40th birthday celebration, though; if anyone wants to know the secret to their partner's heart, it isn't the grand gestures but the proof that you really know someone and love him or her for exactly who they are, rather than what you wish they were.)

Tenements, Towers & Trash: An Unconventional Illustrated History of New York City, by Julia Wertz

Review

"A passionate anatomy of the city, a book of dramatic streetscapes and hidden histories - mostly of infamous women, like the 19th-century celebrity abortionist Madame Restell, who catered to socialites and built her Fifth Avenue mansion a block away from a Catholic church, supposedly to taunt the faithful....The city rises majestically in these pages. The crowded panels evoke the jostle of urban life. Your eye doesn't know where to settle; there's so much to absorb."―The New York Times"Julia Wertz's Tenements, Towers and Trash is nothing short of extraordinary. The meticulously researched histories of the various urban landscapes are fascinating, and Wertz's drawings perfectly capture the visual poetry of the city- the ongoing struggle between past and present, and its unique blend of beauty and ugliness. A must for anyone who loves and appreciates the city, as Wertz so clearly does."―Roz Chast"[Wertz's] love [of New York] is tangible and moving."―NPR"Obsessiveness, in a sense, is the subject of Julia Wertz's Tenements, Towers & Trash, which was flat-out the most enjoyable experience I had with any book this year."―The Chicago Tribune"A delight for New York aficionados. Every city needs a version of this artist and her book." ―Kirkus Reviews"In presenting the life of the city, Wertz captures change as the most important constant trait of New York City, with a vivid eclecticism that makes this an indispensable guidebook to places lost and found." ―Publishers Weekly"Richly dense and informative yet never dull or pedantic, Wertz's eye for detail and obsession with minutiae pays massive dividends for the reader. Her skill at rendering cityscapes left me breathless with admiration and gut-twisting envy. It's also funny as fuck."―Emily Flake, author of Mama Tried"A singular voice on a singular place."―Gabrielle Bell, author of Everything Is Flammable"Julia Wertz's New York is a city of magic and mystery. Her sharply detailed illustrations bring Gotham's streets to life and reveal their secrets. Walkers and history buffs will love being part of Wertz's world."―Esther Crain, author of The Gilded Age in New York, 1870-1910"A completely new and refreshing way to look at New York City history. You'll be so transfixed by this book's extraordinary imagery that you may forget to turn the page!"―Greg Young, author of The Bowery Boys: Adventures in Old New York

I love Julia Wertz’s work and I’ve been waiting anxiously for this book. It’s probably fair to say that there is no one who does what Wertz does with her combination of the visual and written word, old and new architectural art and traditional cartooning, informed information about structures old and new and the detritus that surrounds them and us, all linked with a witty and self-deprecating writing style. Some of the selections first appeared in The New Yorker and Harper’s but there is much here that’s new. Whether your interest is architecture, urban history, graphic arts, offbeat subjects, and/or garbage, this book has you covered.

Great and weird illustrated book on NYC. I can personally attest to the Vibe Accuracy of depictions of 70's/80's/90's NYC: spot on. The depictions from the 1800's look pretty accurate too. If your idea of history is finding out the fate of some modernist Queens world fair custom street lamps, or why horse bones wash up on a particular beach - then this might be just the book for you. (If your idea of history is like, who the "mayor" was or whatever, then I don't know what to suggest. Except HELP IS AVAILABLE. I think). Signage, street vendor apparatus, all sorts of random NYC info, all illustrated with great detail. Happy with this book.

I bought this as a Valentine's gift for my husband because he and I, both lifelong New Yorkers, after living through two years of a health-challengingly filthy and peace-shatteringly noisy ongoing building renovation, in the equally filthy and noisy construction site that is pretty much all of Midtown East, have found ourselves turning on the city of our birth, which previously we had declared the only place on earth we would ever want to live. Since moving outside the city is presently not an option, we decided we needed an attitude adjustment: We would do whatever it might take to fall in love with our city all over again. This surprisingly sizable and hefty book is going a long way toward our rehabilitation program. We pour over it together, admiring the author-writer'sdrawings, insights, wit, dedication to detail, meticulous research, eye for the oddball yet appreciation for the mundane, and her own love affair with the city of which she has sadly, through circumstances she describes, become deprived. Consequently, we are once again becoming thankful for the circumstances that permit us to live here, albeit at times uncomfortably.Reproductions and reviews don't adequately do justice to such a big, gorgeous work. Let me just say that after receiving it I ordered three additionalcopies to gift to natives, long-time transplants, and new New Yorkers, all of whom will surely treasure it as we do. We send much gratitude to Julia Wertz with awe at her accomplishment and hope that she can find her way back here. Also a shout-out to Amazon's customer service department; when one of the reorders arrived with a smudgy cover--not good for a gift--they replaced it in two days and emailed a prepaid label for the return.

A love letter to the NYC that I loved, and a big harumph to the NYC that also forced me out. This book was a very personal read for me, and I very much relate to Ms. Wertz’s feelings on having to leave. I appreciate being able to reach over to the bookcase and revisit my haunts and roll my eyes at what has replaced them. The artwork is incredibly detailed and the research is impressive. A great book for any lover of NYC.

For anyone interested in New York City — but especially if you’ve experienced the city personally at some point in life — Tenements, Towers & Trash is a fond, witty, visually engaging exploration of the city’s history and culture. It’s also nostalgia with attitude, as the artist author chronicles the soulless changes fueled by a flood of money that threatens to wash away the environment that has been home to folks other than the mega-rich and the exciting creativity shared by individuals…well, individuals like the creator of this book.

I am enchanted with this book. Though we are worlds apart in backgrounds, I can easily take a comfy theatre seat behind her eyes and stroll about this wonderful city. This is not some requiem for a city lost, even though some of the comparative street scenes go from quintessential old New York to a disturbing occurrence of Subway shops, she is thoughtful enough to include even older scenes, to show that our melancholy for days gone by was shared by those who lived in the time we miss, perhaps the only constant in an ever changing city.Bigger than that, I am happy to see comic illustration in the Krazy Kat mold. It is a narrative that bears repeated views, like visiting a park. Discovering Ms. Wertz' work has caused me to seek others in her vein, and I have been pleased to discover a world of comic art surviving the bibliocide of the daily newspaper.

I was born, when to school and still live in NYC. It’s changed so much that it’s hard for us “native” New Yorkers to remember anyplace, we spended our life’s (in NY,you have many) in,This book made me love NY again. The artwork is brilliant and the history of people ,places and things that happen in the same place in the 20th-21th is worth having the book. I loved this book, it will be the Christmas gift to all my friends who had moved out NY.

I have been a big Julia Wertz fan for years. If you have not read the Fart Party collection (Museum of Mistakes), buy those as well. I treasure her comics as much as I treasure my BIll Watterson collection.Additionally, I just moved to NYC and seeing it through her eyes in this book is both amusing and insightful.
