I've been in love with Michael Dirr's brain since I was a student of his at U of I, Urbana in the 70's. Like other fans, I've got each addition of his "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants", the industry Bible. If your nursery or landscaper does NOT have a weather-beaten copy of the Manual in their shop or truck, DO NOT HIRE THEM!!! lolI received advance notice of this book's release and placed an advance order, counting the days until arrival. And it's finally HERE<<<, in my hot little hands, and ready to be devoured and enjoyed.Note: The weight of this book is NOT for the faint of heart. It must surpass 6-7 pounds, as a hard cover. The quality of the paper used for printing is of high quality; the way a high-priced coffee table book should look and feel.The photos show a lifetime of passion by Dr. Dirr; this must be one of his proudest achievements, to place in ONE spot just some of the photos he's taken throughout his career. Crisp, clean and sharp; some show Autumn colour, flowers, and adult form, which will be invaluable to landscape services. When you are trying to impress upon a client just HOW BIG a certain tree will become and they don't believe you, THIS book will put that topic to rest.This certainly does not replace the Manual of Woody Plants; it's a short cut with Dirr's usual pithy comments. There's adult size and zoning, with a paragraph or two about each genus and species, but you'll certainly need the Manual for more specifics.What is missing from this book, which I was hoping was present but is not, is clear close-ups of terminal buds of the trees and shrubs. Even in the Manual of Woody Plants, the majority of line drawings are only of the individual leaves and rarely a terminal bud, which is KEY to identifical of the more unusual of plants. A friend of mine, who is an arborist, is weekly running into botanical oddities that were dragged from the woods of Wisconsin or Michigan, or ordered from a now defunct nursery and he has NO CLUE what these things are! He and I log 2-5 hours per week, trying to key them out from Dirr's descriptions in the Manual; if he had included terminal buds in this book, it would have made it perfect.However, most people do not have to key out random and odd Ostrya virginiana or Lindera benzoin trees on a daily basis so they will love and cherish this fine volume. I knew I needed one copy; I was waiting to delve into it to see if I need another. Yup, I do: one for my office and one for my truck, to take to meetings.
My landscaing contractor introduced me to this book, which he’d had since his landscaping-school days. The plants are not only beautifully photographed, but personally commented upon, in addition to being professionally & scientifically reported on. Having recently lost a lot of trees for various reasons, I am finding this book tremendously helpful and an excellent adjunct to the tree books I already have in choosing suitable replacements. The several different approaches and opinions round out the story of the tree, giving me a clearer picture of how well a particular variety might fit our location, space, and plans for use.
I have worked in the nursery/greenhouse retail industry since I was a kid...24 years now. This is one of two books that has been at every place I have worked. I now own it at my own garden center. It is almost completely photographs. It includes pictures of many plants at different times of year, to demonstrate what they look like in flower, autumn color and even defoliated to show branch and bark interest. Different species have different attractive features, so there may be more pictures of some than others.The text is witty, concise and easy to understand. The plants are arranged in alphabetical order based on their Latin names. There is a cross reference in the back for common names. I use this all the time to demonstrate what a plant will look like when mature. I use it to help identify trees and shrubs that my customers bring pictures or pieces of. I will always have one of these books at hand.
i purchased this book to benefit myself and our customers at our Garden Center because the color photographs of the bark, fruit, blossoms, leaves, and overall plant shape easily answer a visual person's questions when reference books and detailed drawings do not go far enough to complete one's questions about visual impact in a landscape. Part II of this encyclopedia is an extensive collection of information from plant sizes, flowering cycles, tolerances, pruning time, fruit & flower colors and flowering sequences as well as bark & soil characteristics. This encyclopedia is a masterful reference book, easy to read, excellent material to brush up on one's horticulture knowledge, very useful in landscape design and by my own proof a very good reference source to have close by as you walk with customers in nurseries or garden centers.
I bought this book to gain more knowledge about trees and shrubs so I make informed decisions on what to grow in my yard. This book helped me tremendously. I wouldn't have been able to select the trees and shrubs that surround and beautify my entire yard without the help of this book. I used to take it with me to nurseries and when seeing a tree I like, I opened the page that discusses it and got the ins and outs about it. I also have asked specialty nurseries for a specific tree I found in this book that they don't display, but can get as a special order. It was worth it. It is true that no book can contain all the information you need to know about trees and shrubs in your area, however, this book comes quite close!
Having paid a pretty penny for this book, I now wish it was online.I agree with all the positive reviews I've read on this site. Dirr reviews a very broad array of species within each genus... he has lots of helpful pictures... his critiques are pointed, and he calls a spade a spade...The thing I miss is a "synoptic" table, in which I could sort the trees by habit, mature size, light tolerance, moisture preference, etc etc etc.If not online, perhaps with a CD inside. I would very willingly part with another couple of bucks, to make the database searchable and analyzable.
