I absolutely love this book. I had loaned my original copy and it disappeared into the Twilight Zone of "unreturned" books. Besides the personal connection with my childhood--I grew up jut a few miles away from his native town and my parents probably knew his--his book reflects his personality: down-to-earth unpretentious and sincere. It also illustrates the "land of milk and honey" nature of that region--Rhône valley, Charolais, Beaujolais, the Bresse and its chicken, etc. humbly credited by all the best granddads/Chefs of Lyonnese cooking, who also never forget the "mères" who taught them. In addition, Jacques Pépin, also a first generation immigrant to America as I am, possesses an unabashed love for his adoptive/adopted country and the possibilities it gave him--with concomitant hard work--to rise to his best.

Wow, this book is way better than expected. I purchased it when it was on the monthly kindle discount list. Surprisingly well written, and well constructed backstory of his childhood. Reminds me of a French version of Kitchen Confidential (it even has a intro from Mr. Bourdain himself). The book gives good insight into Mr. Pepin's upbringing, as well as a story of ascendency in the French culinary scene. This book really gives more context to the great chef we can see regularly on PBS.

When I saw this book, I was really excited to buy/read it because Jacques Pepin feels almost like an honorary member of my family (although I've honestly never even met him before). He's not the kind of person I consciously think about, but his name has always been familiar within my family. My mom grew up in France and ever since I can remember, she would consult her 'Jacques Pepin: A French Chef Cooks at Home' recipe book. With its pages falling out, it was clearly the most consulted recipe book of her (large) collection. It's impossible to forget the delicious results (especially the tarte aux pommes) and the many pages of helpful pictures. Memories aside, this book was a joy to read--great, funny stories that fit together in a very clear way to tell Jacque Pepin's complete story. This is one person I would definitely love to meet in real life!

I first became aware of Jacques Pepin while living in San Francisco and saw him on PBS in a video of a fundraiser he did with Julia Child - it was hilarious! One of the things he demonstrated was boning a chicken - she timed him at 40 seconds. He then stuffed and rolled it. And, I became a fan - like Julia, he demonstrates HOW to cook.I watched for his TV series, and in that he demonstrated step by step how to bone the checken. Well, I tried it - with the 4th chicken (over a few months, sitting at my VCR, armed with knives and the remote), I got it down to 15 minutes.However, he also said that after learning the technique, one could bone any fowl from a squab to a large turkey. Well, it was a few years later I tried boning a turkey. (Don't much like turkey, but my son-in-law does, and one of the advantages to a boned chicken is that it cooks quickly and much more evenly than a whole stuffed one.) Got out the VHS tape and my weapons. 1.5 hours later, it was done. It was worth it, but I was convinced he lied - big time! Got better with the 2nd turkey the following year - cut my time in half. Found out how to adapt the technique when his "Essentials Techniques" book came out.This book told me why he is so very good at teaching. Thank you, Jacques.

A wonderful romp through a life well lived, by a truly wonderful man. I'm a food professional, so getting to read these very well written stories of apprenticeship and working in France during the last days of truly classic French cuisine is just a delight. There are a wealth of wonderful riches throughout, and it's all written in Pepin's gentle, humorous way. Great read.

Enjoyed this chatty, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant autobiography. It was interesting to learn about the inside workings of a French kitchen, then as translated to an American sensibility. Recipes are included, and helpfully indexed in the back. The flaw is the end...he just abruptly stops, not really ending, more like a thought not completed. I kept looking for a conclusion... The kindle edition, at least, could use better editing. Several obvious typing errors, and at least one recipe is not complete ( when and how am I supposed to incorporate the pork chops?)

Jaqcques Pepin spins a most delightful autobiography about his days in and around some of the most famous kitchens in the world. He takes us through the years of his apprenticeship in the demanding restaurants of France, where he learned how to be a formal French chef, even preparing food for DeGaulle and other high officials. And then he came to America where he found a totally different -- more casual, more daring -- cuisine and set out to master it, along with the English language. The book takes the reader on a culinary tour that includes, besides fine restaurants, corporate kitchens, books, magazines, television cooking classes -- the whole comprehensive world of food. Pepin writes as he cooks -- deliciously. He goes against the stereotype of the moody, dictatorial chef and comes across as a guy you'd like a have a beer with. And along the way he shares vignettes of some of the great chefs and food writers he befriended -- Claiborne, Beard, Franey, Child and others. And at the end of each chapter there is a recipe or two that usually illustrates the period in his wife about which he has just written. If you are not a foodie, you will be after you finish this delightful, gourmet meal of a book.

For those who don’t know Mike Reilly personally, you’ll find the beginning of his book quite interesting and informative. Mike gives you a peek into his personal background, his family and how he became involved in this amazing sport. But, for me, I love, love, loved the stories of the athletes. Be sure to have your Kleenex ready! Mike truly remembers and relates the struggles and emotions that so many of these athletes dealt with to reach their personal goals. Knowing these are only a few of his many, many memories, makes me look forward to his next book!

After reading "Finding My Voice, Tales from Ironman", I couldn't help but envy Mike Reilly's good fortune in being able to follow his passion and become such an iconic figure in the world of Ironman. The individuals and stories he describes and tells are both varied and riveting. Here, we are treated to a backdrop of Ironman tales never before told.The man behind the most important exclamation in all of triathlon, "YOU ARE AN IRONMAN" is clearly, so much more that just a voice, he is the spirit and heart of Ironman. Triathlete or not, you can't be helped from being moved when reading his tales. Wonderful read.

Amazing book and an enjoyable read! Finding My Voice is the perfect title. I really liked Mike's personal connection to the Ironman individuals in his book. The Ironman stories were descriptive, inspiring and emotionally touching. In reading his book, having heard him speak, I sensed his voice inflections, as if he were talking to me - including the grins and laughter. Yup, it seemed like his voice.

What an absolutely amazing book. In addition to being the GREATEST RACE ANNOUNCER, mike is a fantastic story teller. The stories are relevant, heartfelt and beyond uplifting. I can not imagine someone who reads the book not finding at least one story that hits home. I was lucky enough to find 2. This book is not narrowly for the fringe athlete enthusiast that enjoys the multisport lifestyle- rather it is for anyone who understands and appreciates the determination and resiliency of people and the power of determination. Great book Mike!!! Can't wait for the sequel!

Reilly did a great job of writing this book for everyone - from Ironman finishers to those who may not even know what an Ironman is. Without being preachy, Reilly delivered subtle life messages by focusing on the incredible achievements of certain Ironman finishers. This story will have the reader laughing, crying, and smiling - a super dynamic collection of stories and memories. Reilly writes with a colloquial voice, which makes you feel as if he's sitting in the room with you, telling you the story in-person. A feel-good book all around.

This highly entertaining book made me laugh, cry, marvel in awe, and believe that, yes, anything is possible. Even if you're not a hardcore triathlete, you'll appreciate Mike's storytelling and inspiring tales. His collection of anecdotes proves that there is no obstacle or excuse that is insurmountable if the sheer will and daring is there. You'll "meet" some everyday people who do extraordinary things, and maybe even start questioning your own limits, in sport and beyond. Loved this book!

Just when you think you know someone, I’ve known Mike for over 50 years, you think they can’t surprise you. But the depth of sensitivity and emotion Mike relayed to me in his book was a real eye opener. His moving portrayal of the people in and around Ironman will move you, too.

You don't need triathlon/IronMan experience to appreciate the impact of the stories. They are truly moving and inspirational. Great read and can't recommend it enough!

Chaotic traffic in obsolete vehicles in the cities and on the few bumpy roads give a lively picture of what traveling is like in Cuba. Sounds like fun. Not to forget a great number of quaint old buildings in the cities and unexpected beautiful scenery. It’s also about social justice versus freedom of opinion, about friendship and human kindness. Interaction with occidental tourists provides food for thought.

If you need the motivational pump-up, then this book is for you. If you don't (because you already KNOW you can do it or have already started doing it), you'll have to wade through a bunch of that to get to the really helpful meat of the matter. Still, if you can walk away with even one or two good ideas, the read was worth it. I just think it could have been 300 pages shorter.

Fortunately I only spent $1.99 on this Kindle book. I managed to get about 3/4 of the way thru before I just gave up. Like some other reviewers point out the first 40% of the book is all about "believe you can do it"!!! Which is great except I'm past that stage, I'm to the point where I want to understand the ins & outs and logistics of HOW to get investment properties.The book is full of super annoying oversimplifications like "do good deals"....and "buy a property that will appreciate over time"....umm duh! And there are direct quotes of similar nature from supposed millionaire investors like "partner with someone who knows what he's doing"....OMG, I can't believe this book got so many good reviews. And then there are the numerous contradictions like "buy a property in a great neighborhood where everyone wants to live", followed by advice to negotiate the least amount on price for that neighborhood where everyone wants to be. In many parts of the country its a seller's market for the great neighborhoods and you will easily blow your budget in a bidding war for location. Additional contradictions that drove me nuts were "decrease rental turnover by pricing monthly rent fairly" but then followed by the advice in later chapters to "maximize your rental income by charging extra fees for pets, storage, parking, utilities....."At the age of 39 I've built and re-built a solid budget over time but I suppose that chapter might be good for many readers. Additionally, towards the end there is a chapter on taxes which I found helpful. Honestly, I've learned way more about the process of RE investing from some (free) blogs on the web.

I read through the first 125 pages waiting for some actual real estate knowledge to show up. It's all just fluff and telling you that "you can do it" and "have the millionaire mindset". I wouldn't be looking at real estate books if I didn't already think that way. I felt like I was at a real estate workshop with "gurus" trying to sell you on all their products. There are multiple quotes from other "millionaire investors" with pieces of amazing advice such as "If I'm not going to make money, I won't buy it".There is very little in terms of actual knowledge in this book. Do not waste your time.

Has many good ideas...Just could have put all ideas on 1 sheet of paper. Lots of word fill. Maybe some people appreciate stories of success. Personally, I just wanted facts.

Many people are saying this is more motivational than how to. Of course it is. I think it's by design. How to succeed (and the definition of success itself) varies person to person, area to area.I have bought this book for many friends and my recommendation is to find 1-2 things they can take away. Mine are the goals (think, buy, own, earn a million) and the personal balance sheet. This to me is GOLD. I update my balance sheet monthly which both allows me time to reflect on the good and also motivates me when I have a 'flat/inactive' month.I read this book every summer and always pick up something new.

Like most real estate books, it's pretty generic stuff. There's nothing wrong or weird in it, it's just superficial like most other books in this category. It seems like people want to get you hungry to be rich more than they want to give you concrete skills for analyzing good and bad deals and giving specifics. Honestly, I've learned about 100x more from a few property investors in my area over dinner than I've learned from just about any book. It's good for beginners but if you own even one property, you won't learn much.

Excellent book. I own a couple properties and not all the info was new to me and I think you can find much if the info online, but not in a well written and well compiled way like this. I was validated in my thinking and strategy. The positive ‘you can do it’ and mental aspects of the game are very important and helped me. I found the success stories particularly helpful as they show you what is possible and that normal people can do this. I don’t think there was much hype. I would highly recommend it. Written by an experienced real estate guy. I’m giving it to my kids so they can start thinking in this direction early in their lives and ger set until in real estate. I wish I would have heard or read this info 20 years ago. Not sure that reading a single book will replace the need for a mentor unless you’re a complete self-starter, but this ibfonand some basics from my financial advisor got me started.

This was the first book that I have ever read on real estate investing, and oh my what an introduction it was. The book is part motivational and part instructional, which I think it's one of the best combinations for any book out there. After you finish this book, you will most likely want to start investing in real estate, even if it's in small amounts and small increments of time.
