Elizabeth Fremantle hasn't bothered to inform herself in the least about Jacobean court manners or habits. To whit, in the first 25 pages of The Poison Bed the author has King James I in his apartments with Richard Carr, courtier and apparent boy-toy, preparing him for a tuck-in. During their exchange, the royal squeeze prepares, lights and smokes a pipe in-between kisses with his king. Had she made the most cursory Wiki search Fremantle would have discovered "A Counterblaste to Tobacco" one of the most vituperative attacks against smoking ever made and written 10 years earlier than the period when our tale begins. By whom you ask? Why King James I the monarch who is getting smoke blown in his face whilst he French-kisses Richard Carr! This passivity by a man who regarded himself as God's infallible representative on earth. The annointed of God's Will, apparently put up with any disgusting indignity to canoodle with a cutie. A snippet for your perusal, but the last sentence says it all:"Have you not reason then to bee ashamed, and to forbeare this filthie noveltie, so basely grounded, so foolishly received and so grossely mistaken in the right use thereof? In your abuse thereof sinning against God, harming your selves both in persons and goods, and raking also thereby the markes and notes of vanitie upon you: by the custome thereof making your selves to be wondered at by all forraine civil Nations, and by all strangers that come among you, to be scorned and contemned. A custome lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the Lungs, and in the blacke stinking fume thereof, neerest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomelesse".No James wasn't railing against homosexuality which he may or may not have indulged in, he was railing against smoking! That both author and editors could make so colossal a blunder sparked my curiosity. (There are plenty of other mistakes--estranged Earl's and Countesses don't ask each other to "pass the bread" to make small talk during dinner--they have servants for that). What, I wondered were Fremantle's sources if she missed details both great and small? Under Author's Notes just a single book is mentioned as a source--a stunning lack of historical interest and indifference. Unsurprisingly then, the Poison Bed is littered with presentism--independent women with modern sensibilities, sexually obsessed men in their thrall (who also get ahead by courting their monarch) or possibly murdering former male lovers who might make waves. A regular Roman bacchanalia, those Stuarts. Mind this is the period when Puritans and Calvinists were ascendent and most empowered to contest religious laxity or moral turpitude. .Worst of all is the structure of dual narrators--Him and Her--Frances and Richard telling their tale or conning their con. It's taken I suppose from Gone Girl that awful clunker that found a huge audience and had publishers swooning and salivating for more ever since. I would gladly acknowledge they've found it in The Poison Bed which has much in common with that stilted stinker from five years ago--wooden dialogue, padded writing and a very modern sensibility. The reader though was promised historical fiction. Both author and publisher have failed completely to deliver anything worthy of the name. Under Acknowledgments the author claims she is so pleased by the design that she gladly have her book judged by its cover. Very wise, Ms. Fremantle. The content is awful.

2.5 stars This is an interesting book if you are looking for sexual misadventures in King James I times. If you are looking for historical accuracy or good writing, this would not be the book for you. According to the author's epilogue, she spent an amazing amount of time in research by reading ONE book. Wow! The book is riddled with historical inaccuracies and improbabilities. Told by a husband and a wife in alternating chapters, it concerns the murder of the husband's friend, Thomas, while he is incarcerated in the Tower of London. The husband, Robin Carr, and supposedly King James' favorite boy toy. He becomes infatuated by Frances Howard and moves mountains to have her including a divorce, a murder, influence selling and other tawdry acts. One of the couple is one of the stupidest people on earth and one is one of the vilest. What a match up. There's literally nothing these two won't do to get ahead including a really gross threesome. The alternating chapters are fine but the author goes between first and third person within the same chapter and that is disconcerting. I believe there used to be copy editors in the book publishing world but apparently that position no longer exists. I think of all the great books that wouldn't have existed without a great copy editor like To Kill A Mockingbird and mourn the loss of that position in the book publishing world. This book could have used a guiding hand or ten. This could have been a really interesting story if it had been researched, better written and read less like a story from The National Enquirer. As it is, it is a disappointment.

Using dual narrators and shifting from "Him" (Robert Carr, King James' I paramour) to "Her" (Elizabeth Frances Howard Carr). While this format works in many situations, in "The Poison Bed" a chapter sometimes begins in the third person and then shifts to the first person. I did not care for the inconsistency within a single chapter.The gist of the "mystery" is which of the two narrators actually murdered Robert's former lover and mentor. As the two main characters narrate their stories from prison cells, the reader learns of their past and of circumstances that might have skewed their morality and ethical beliefs. Hints of Elizabeth's physical abuse by her uncle and of Robert's impoverished past are presented as excuses for behaviors."The Poison Bed" is a book to read if only you are seeking fictional history presented as historical fiction and coupled with a murder mystery.

I liked this book because I believe computation is critical to a deep understanding of a mathematical subject. Here we have examples and problems ( with solutions ) that will test your ability to use the theory. I agree with others that there is some hand waving when it comes to rigor. If you have no experience with the subject you might like the "popular math" book An Imaginary Tale by Paul Nahin to get your feet wet. I wouldn't start with Ahlfors. Another book that is loved by many but panned for lack of rigor by some is Visual Complex Analysis by Needham. I also like some of the older books like Watson's A Course in Modern Analysis and some of the inexpensive books published by Dover. There's a lot to choose from but this one is among the best for people who like practical math.

I posted the following review with the Bak/Newman book, but I thought reproducing it here as well may be useful:I have invested a lot of effort searching for the "ideal" textbook on complex variables. I found Bak/Newman to be extremely terse, with minimal detail, inadequate explanations, and unenlightening examples. The book by Brown/Churchill is a very accessible introduction, although I was surprised by the number of typos, and the use of "multivalued functions" may cause confusion. I came to the conclusion that the book by Gamelin may be the best overall in terms of clarity of explanation, rigor, and useful detail.

Never before have I began reading a book more predisposed to hate it. Generally, I like to read math books that are slim because I feel that it forces the author to get right to the heart of the material as quickly as possible. I also like my math books to have a rigid structure of formal proofs surrounded by expositional paragraphs. This book, on the other hand, sits at an intimidating 478 pages and has no proofs that are set aside in the proof environment in LaTeX. The proofs are blended together with the general commentary paragraphs in the flow of this book's exposition. So it was a huge surprise for me when I actually found that I enjoyed reading this book.The first thing that I think should be noted is that this book is written in an informal language. I know many reviewers have stated that this bothers them and have hinted at the fact that they think some of the proofs here are less-than-rigorous (perhaps implying wrong). I don't think this is the case at all and there's a good reason for this. This book is about conveying the essence of a proof to the reader much more than the gritty technical details (which there is little of in basic complex analysis in the first place). This is a good thing. Whatever can be said about the books by Rudin or some others, you cannot possibly say that a newcomer to the subject would walk away with a good intuition for the subject on a first go. Here is a book entirely devoted to teaching the reader how to think about the material so that they will see the results as being natural, and the book does a marvelous job at it. Now, with this in mind, I thought that all of the proofs were very rigorously stated, and the fact that he used English instead of mathematical symbols for everything greatly enhanced the readability of the proofs. The only proof that was less-than-rigorous in my eyes was the proof of Green's Theorem, but Gamelin comes right out and states that it won't be rigorous, and I don't think you can bash a complex analysis book for not proving a multivariable result. Another thing worth noting is that this book takes a more geometric approach to the material in that it focuses on how FLTs behave and how regions are deformed/not deformed by certain types of mappings. This is the style that seems most popular for introductory texts and was seemingly popularized by Ahlfors's text.Another thing that I think should be mentioned is that by the time a student can reasonably begin looking for books on complex analysis, they should have the ability and mathematical maturity to take a description or an explanation and digest it and turn it into formal mathematics need be. When you converse with your friends or colleagues about math, you don't speak in epsilons and deltas, but rather in general terms which cut to the heart of the argument. Gamelin is doing this, but in a much more structured format than what you would expect, and so I think this style is beneficial. For example, when I came to the proof of the Reside Theorem, I instantly knew what he was going to do for the proof before I read it. I had an intuition for the material that made the results appear natural, and for a first book to do this is quite impressive.So what about the problems. As staying in the first book on the subject category, this is a book which has a wide variety of problems and difficulty levels. If you attempt most of them (which you should with this book) then I think you would walk away with a very good understanding of how to use the results in both simple and complicated scenarios. However, you must do most of the harder problems. It would be very easy to simply do the easy problems and then be lured into a false sense of security about your depth of understanding.Another thing that needs to be mentioned is that a first book in complex analysis should teach computational techniques as well as theoretical ones. Complex analysis was made, in part, to compute definite and indefinite integrals. So having a book that does not teach you how to use the residue theorem to compute an integral is doing you a disservice. This is another reason why books like Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis are not good first choices for textbooks. Here is a book that teaches the student how to do computations when they are needed, and gives plenty of clear examples and practice problems so that the student can become proficient.The breadth of information that this book covers is also impressive. This book covers all of the standard material (with a pinch of not-so-standard material) in the first eleven chapters (out of sixteen). I took a graduate course at UMich which covered this material exactly and it was a very solid course. After this material, any student could go on to further topics in other books and would be completely comfortable recognizing and implementing complex analytic techniques in more advanced analysis books. I have not read the last five chapters (which cover special functions, approximation theorems, Riemann surfaces, and solutions to the Dirichlet problem), but they appear to carry the same style as the rest of the book, which in my mind means they should be good as well.All in all, I think this book is as good of a book as any other for a first exposure to the material. Obviously more advanced books will be needed by graduate students later in their studies, but I would not look past this book as a first course (especially when Ahlfors is almost two-hundred dollars now).

We are using this book for my graduate complex analysis course. The book is easy to understand, assumes little background apart from knowledge of calculus, basic sequences and series, and basic real analysis. Sometimes the author doesn't go into a lot of detail into the materials presented in the text before jumping into exercises. So, i felt unprepared at times to tackle those problems even after reading the material preceding the exercises. Would have been helpful if we had a review chapter at the beginning of the book refeshing some of the real analysis techniques we would need to know to fully understand the book.But, overall a good book.

I wish the fundamental theorem of algebra would have been proved. But the book says it will be shown in later sections. The homework of the section is working into the proof. I found the problem in the second section, about geometric series, interesting.All in all the first three sections were well presented and the homework problems enlightening.

There were many typos and wrong answers at the back of the book which confused me sometimes, but besides this, I've never seen a more complete and readable book on complex analysis. He proves every theorem (although sometimes the proof comes several chapters after he uses the result) and provides plenty of examples for each new concept. Gamelin even has graduate-level complex analysis in this book too.

My daughters (6 & 7) and I love, love, love The Penderwicks. The Penderwicks at Point Mouette is a wonderful book and a wonderful addition to a favorite series. I would highly recommend this book and this series to children and parents.

We love penderwicks over here. My 7 yo son listens to these books every single night at bedtime. The stories are sweet, loving, and give him a calm happy bubble in his room to fall asleep. We first checked these out at the library and after the forth time checking them out, we added them to his birthday list!

If you have not yet met the Penderwicks, you are seriously missing out. I confess right at the beginning that these are some of my favorite books of all time. The four sisters, Rosalind, Skye, Jane, and Batty and endearing and oh so flawed. Maybe it's because I am one of four sisters myself (and a brother), but I can relate to these girls so easily. Every time I meet them, I come away smiling or laughing. Now you know that this review will not be objective in the slightest.These books are delightful. Not only is the writing very fine, but the characters feel so real, both the talents and flaws of Rosalind, Skye, Jane, Batty, and their friend Jeffrey show up loud and clear. This third book has a special surprise in store for Jeffrey, a plot twist that I should have picked up on before I did, but I was so involved in the sisters antics that I didn't notice it at first. I won't say more than that because I don't want to spoil it if you haven't read it yet. Happy sigh. Only problem now is that I'll have to wait for the next one.

Have I written a review of this book before? If so, it would only mirror my repeated readings of the book. I admit, one main twist of the plot is like a Dickensian denouement, and you wonder: Could this really happen? But you're reading it, so it does. Ms. Jeanne Birdsall has many many strengths in her writing. One that I appreciate very much is her delicacy in character portrayal: here, she throws approximately nine people (adults and children) and two dogs together summering for two weeks in Maine, and without the situation turning into a riot, each character is "turned out" so beautifully, with such detail,uniqueness, and distinctness that for that moment she (or he) is the only one in view. What makes her books big and wide open is that everyone is so much herself, or himself, that, as you read, you move from world to world. Keep writing!

Have read the 1st two in the series aloud to my 3 girls. We all love the story. The Penderwicks are growing up a little quickly with the latest love interest for Jane, 12, but as of Chapter 11, it’s not so much that I have skipped around.

These books tell stories full of action, drama, romance, etc. I never thought I would read a series so good to make me never want it to end. I am so upset that I read the very last book. My mom said I am a lot like Jane (except for the obsession with love in the last book) because, I too am a young writer. But my two favorite characters are definitely Skye and Jeffrey. Skye, because she has a great personality, a bit of a temper, and is very smart. Jeffrey, because, he is a wonderful musician, and very kind to all four sisters. I just started school and I am bummed out because I don't have a fourth, or fifth, (and so on,) Penderwicks book to read yet, but still, when the two other books have been completed, five is not enough! 7 practice tests in same format as actual exam. Perfect for practicing timed testing and identifying which concepts your child needs further review. My son completed all 7 tests. His scores on these practice exams (and time to complete) improved with each test. On the 7th test, he scored 90%. There was one reviewer who commented that the practice test was nothing like the actual IAAT exam. My son took the IAAT a couple of weeks ago. He said the format and concepts tested were the same. He also thought the IAAT exam was easier than these practice tests. We received his IAAT results yesterday - he scored 100%. This book was money well spent for us.

My 6th grade son took the IAAT test in Feb 2018 for 7th grade math placement. He just got his results back this week (March 3, 2018) and he got 53 of 60 (4 sections with 15 questions each). That's only an 88% but is still considered really good. His school gave him 5 points out of 5 points for the IAAT portion of his math placement matrix (points from different areas of the matrix - CogAT, ITBS, IAAT, math class grade, etc.) tallies up to determine his 7th grade math placement. He said the questions in the IAAT practice test booklet were harder than the actual test he took. Note that we made him take the sample tests several times over the course of a month or so. Note some kids learn faster than others so that's why we dragged it out over a month for him. This book helped out tremendously. We are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

I am glad I decided to buy the two books, it did help me structure the test review for my child. I am also grateful I did not end up with a lone sample test as is the case with other books with the same price tag.

Great similarity with what was seen on the test, this helped my kid pass the algebra placement without any trouble at all. Great coverage and plenty practice tests which prepared well for the test

This book is supposed to be 6th grade IAAT test prep. The questions are not 6th grade level. They are higher level questions that are not a good indication of the IAAT test. I have been administering the IAAT at this level for many years. I will be requesting a refund.

It's a great study tool!

Used along with Volume 2. My son had very easy time passing IAAT after using these books for just 2 weeks. Recommend.

Basically, it's marketing material for a video and most likely will lead you to a 'program' that will help you become 'rich'. You certainly can make money selling on Amazon, but not by using the information in this book. It's very basic and most of the information can be found if you go to the bottom of the Amazon page and read about becoming a seller. Also note, that unless you already have a product lined up, you do not want to set up a professional account. There is a monthly fee of $39.95 that will be charged immediately.

I read this book as an instructional guide (a Seller''s guide for dummies) from beginning to end. It was helpful to get started but so much was left out that I had to figure out on my own (trial & error) that I am still not sure if I did things right & still have dozens of questions with no answers. I guess you truly get what you pay for so since this book was "free" that translates to "not much useful information."

This book was detailed...I enjoyed this read and will recommend it to others. Books providing business ideas are always interesting;

This was a quick read for those delving into the possibility of becoming a seller on Amazon. The book was informative for the basics, but I'm considering getting other books, as well, which go further in depth. Good book for those wanting the basics to online selling.

Short which is good for me. A few good tid bits if your are just starting to sell on amazon.

I was pretty far into the book before it started to deal with the actual subject matter. The information wasn't very helpful.

This book wouldn’t let me leave without writing a review without twenty words at least and all I have to say is good advice

Easy to read basic instructions for new sellers of bulk products. It takes 20 minutes to read and takes reader thru set up of account.
