This book has great material if you're interested in black & white, and it has some good things to offer even for people who want to work in color. The book starts off on the wrong foot, but then it becomes very useful beginning in Chapter 3. It's clearly written, comprehensive and includes useful detail.Chapter 1 is a portfolio of the author's work. Chapter 2 is about his multi-computer setup and all the hard drives he has in RAID arrays, etc. Swell, but tell us what the practical needs are for amateurs and beginning pro's, please. After looking at his portfolio and reading his gloat you're wondering whether this book is just an ego trip for Mr. Diallo.But in Chapter 3 he reviews color management and gets into the details about device profiles. If you're reading about digital B&W you've probably already read about color management, but this book explains it better than anything else I've read. Chapter 4 gets into examples of conversions from digital color to B&W. There's good info on scanning and scanning software, which is an unexpected bonus if you have a collection of negatives from your pre-digital life.Chapter 5 covers the use of Photoshop for B&W. It summarizes the main tools photographers should learn and incluuds some examples of how to use them, and that chapter is as useful for color as it is for B&W. Chapter 6 goes into the details on B&W printing, including the use for third part ink sets for Epson printers and the use of raster imaging processors (RIPs). Again, the text is clearly written even as it goes into detail. Chapter 7 covers digital workflow and includes a couple of useful end-to-end examples. There's an excellent discussion of why and how to use sharpening. Chapters 8 and 9 will be of interest to people interesting in selling their work. Chapter 8 on limited editions could be condensed to about 5 pages by removing redundant text, but it does contain clear and presumably useful advice. Chapter 9 on building a portfolio is detailed and includes a short section on building a web site for displaying one's portfolio. The advice is certainly useful for someone hoping to sell his or her work as fine art. There's a good reference guide at the back with links to various sources of ink, paper, software, etc.There are two flaws that should be corrected in a future update/new edition: The most serious flaw is that the illustrations in the book are small and sometimes rather dark, so it's hard to verify the points Mr. Diallo makes in the text. He even ackmowledges their shortcomings in thhe text. The publisher could learn a lot from looking at the excellent quality of the illustrations printed in books on photography published by Rocky Nook. Mr. Diallo posts full sized versions of the photos for download from the book's website, but each one has to be downloaded one at a time.That's really a kludge. In a book about photography, the photos should be printed well enough so that the reader can see what Mr. Diallo is writing about! And his examples should be on a CD included with the book so the reader can apply the lessons, especially the lessons in Chapter 5 about using Photoshop for Black & White. The inadequately printed illustrations means 4 stars, not 5.(A minor quibble: The text about a photo is often on the page before the photo itself. But that's a small matter compared to the poorly reproduced photos themselves.)The second flaw is inevitable. The book was published at the end of 2007 and it covers both software and hardware (printers, scanners, spectrophotometers) very well. That information is getting out of date as of the end of 2009. For example the author describes how to use Photoshop CS3, but the current version is CS4; the Epson 2400 has been replaced by the 2880 and the 3800 by the 3880. It's not a problem for the next year or so (through 2010), but eventually the product-specific information will get stale. Hopefully there will be a new edition -- maybe even one with well-reproduced illustrations and a CD.Still, the techniques the author describes won't get stale, so if you're interested in digital B&W, this is a very good choice.

Warning: This book is NOT for you if your primary interest is truly that of "mastering" digital black and white photography and printing.Any time a book title includes the words "mastering" or "ultimate" my smell-o-rama sensor automatically activates. Such sweeping and arrogant suggestions are always over-cooked. "Mastering Digital Black and White" is no exception.The book is nicely printed and features very good color illustrations, making many of Diallo's image processing points easy to follow. The overall design is easy on the eyes but has that independently-produced look due mainly to the lack of margins throughout the book.I estimate that roughly only 15%-20% of the book's 357 content pages have any direct bearing on the title subject of "black and white", with many of these pages buried like Easter eggs inside broader topics. Like nearly all of the dozens of kindred books on digital printing and digital photography most of this book's content deals with basic tech and photo topics, survey-level smatterings of "current" software and printers, and little side-bars. While Diallo presents these topics interestingly and with good subject matter authority they can be found in many other basic books and have a rather short freshness life.All this is not to say that the book is without merit. Although he does indeed mow some well-trimmed lawns Diallo offers some rather unique material and interesting perspectives. In chapter 8, titled "The Limited Edition", Diallo presents a good summary of the controversial topic of artificially editioning digital prints. Like other chapters, however, that same chapter manages to meander into other territories (papers, print storage, archival ratings) before it's terminated. Chapter 9, "The Portfolio", also nicely covers a topic that many will find interesting; that of constructing and presenting a contiguous portfolio of work. Diallo also features some interesting little interviewsIn summary, this book delivers very little of what its title promises. Instead, it's really more of an intermediate-level general book on Photoshop and ink jet printing circa 2007. Nevertheless I really did enjoyed reading it, more so than most of its peers that I've read. But, like so many of its peers, its value is diluted by trying to cover far too much ground. I was disappointed that the title represented yet another bait-and-switch.The market for the truly specialized "Digital Black and White Photography and Printing" work remains open. Next!

I had hoped to find some basics in this book for digital B&W, but I found mostly over-the-top information that was of no use to me. I have enjoyed photography as a hobby for over 40 years, so I am not new to it. Instead of taking the reader thru the basics and then following with more advanced info, the writer hits the reader with some of the most technical aspects of digital photopraphy. This book might be okay for someone who considers themself a very advanced amature or a wannabe pro. This is not a book for someone looking for basic digital B&W help. I got the impression that the author has all of this knowledge and is trying to impress the reader with how much he knows.

About the Author

George Berkeley (1685–1753) was an Irish philosopher best known for the advancement of a theory he called "immaterialism." He wrote A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge in 1710.Roger Woolhouse was educated at Dent’s School, Saltburn, and University College London. He has taught at University College Cardiff, the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University, and is presently professor of philosophy at the University of York and visiting professor at Rutgers University. He is the author of Locke’s Philosophy of Science and Knowledge, Locke, The Empiricists, and Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz. He has also edited Goerge Berkeley’s Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous for Penguin Classics.

Esse est percipi— “To be is to be perceived.”That is immaterialism in a nutshell, but I found this quote from the THREE DIALOGUES BETWEEN HYLAS AND PHILONOUS to be both more comprehensive and more comprehensible: “There are only things perceived and things perceiving; or that every unthinking being is necessarily, and from the very nature of its existence, perceived by some mind; if not by any finite created mind, yet certainly by the infinite mind of God, in whom we live, move and have our being.”The idea that nothing exists unless it is perceived opposes conventional thinking, even today.When reviewing a work of nonfiction, I take two things into consideration: the message and the delivery.If the message is unique, significant and most important, new, then it becomes the principal consideration in my review. On the other hand, if the subject is something we’ve all heard before, then the delivery becomes the paramount factor in my assessment.This was one of the hardest reviews I’ve written, and I’ve written many. I was considering giving the book three stars—a balance between the message (five stars) and the delivery (two stars), but this is a book that I recommend to anyone who thirsts for self-realization, and such an endorsement deserves no less than the highest rating.Therefore, I finally decided to base my rating on the subject of immaterialism, and my review on the method of delivery. I have never done this before, but I make an exception here because the message is truly a milestone in philosophy. It shakes the very foundations of human conditioning from the moment we are taught to utter our first words. George Berkeley came up with the idea of immaterialism despite the overwhelming prejudice of the period, the dogmas imposed by western society, the risk involved in introducing novel theories—never mind radical ones—and the difficulties of in acquiring and exchanging information and ideas in general.Now for my review, which is based solely on the delivery of the message.:The pros: of the prose.I found the THREE DIALOGUES BETWEEN HYLAS AND PHILONOUS easier to follow and a lot more entertaining than Berkeley’s previous work, A TREATISE CONCERNING THE PRINCIPALS OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE.Philonous comes from the Greek word, and literally translates to “friend of mind.” Hylas is another word from Greek, which means “matter.” Mind versus matter. Immaterialism versus materialism. Cute. A little too cute.But then again, they didn’t name a city, a famous university, a library, and an Episcopal seminary after Berkeley for his writing skills.Speaking of prose, though the language is bombastic and at times convoluted, this book makes for an easier read than his previous work.One must be careful, however: this text was written several centuries ago, and many words had different meanings back then.For instance, “vulgar,” in old English, means common, not coarse or rude. And by the word “repugnant,” George Berkeley is referring to the archaic “given to stubborn resistance,” rather than the modern understanding of the word: “extremely distasteful.”Archaic vocabulary notwithstanding, the aggressive courtroom style back and forth between the two fictitious characters feels more like an argument than a philosophical discussion. I don’t know if Berkeley did this intentionally—perhaps to make the text more interesting—or if this seemingly rude discourse was the standard in communication among the educated and upper class of that era.The dialogue is a fiction through which George Berkeley attempted to make his immaterialism more palpable to the reader. The great philosopher succeeded in this regard to a significant degree. I found clarification to many questions that arose after reading his first book, A TREATISE CONCERNING THE PRINCIPALS OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE. Using dialogue in the new version made the language far easier to understand. He also stretched out many subjects and approached numerous ideas from different angles.The cons:Philonous (the character supporting Berkeley’s immaterialism) is portrayed as this genius with an unfailing understanding of, well, everything, whereas poor Hylas, though apparently educated, and of commensurate class–very important in those days–carries his arguments with comparatively diminished clarity and eloquence. It’s akin to a debate between Stephen Hawking and an eighth-grade physics teacher on string theory versus loop quantum gravity.Hylas often raises the same objections over and over again, only varying the questions slightly. And every time Philonous counters, Hylas concedes.Rarely does Hylas challenge Philonous with a difficult question, especially in the first two dialogues.Given Hylas’ intellectual ineptitude, and Bishop Berkeley’s deep Christian convictions, one would think the author would have endowed his fictitious counterpart, Philonous, with commensurate compassion. But alas, Philonous though made to appear so wise, shows no heart.Passion yes. Compassion no.That put me off, I must admit.To conclude:I recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring the beginnings—and indeed, what some consider the foundations of—a major internal shift through immaterialism. Despite it’s many failings as a book, the delivery is clearer and covers more ground than his previous work. In short, you’ll get the message, and in the final analysis, that’s what really matters.

This is a good foundation book for anyone who is a Non Dual seeker.

This is a wonderful little book. However clever Kant may have been, prose style took a turn for the worse in his systematic treatment. Berkeley, by contrast, is a great writer, and these dialogues brim with wit and charm.Many of the arguments that Berkeley puts forward in these dialogues will seem very strange to a modern reader who is used to the discoveries of the natural sciences; and it is certainly true that many of Berkeley’s arguments against materialism are fallacious. Nonetheless, Berkeley’s thinking was a giant leap forward from Locke’s (whose position is represented by Hylas), and is in many ways strikingly modern.Here is the best way I can frame it for the philosophical debuttante. Philosophers have long had the nasty habit of positing unknowable metaphysical entities to account for the world. In Aristotelian and Cartesian conceptions, this was simply ‘substance’; in Leibniz, it was the ‘monads’; in Locke—Berkeley’s main opponent—it was ‘primary qualities’; and in Kant, it was ‘noumena’. These entities are, as it were, conjured up by the philosopher’s magic wand to account for the existence of matter, as an underlying substratum that is forever unknowable to us puny mortals.Berkeley pulls this position to pieces, and for good reason. Why conjure up a mysterious ‘substance’ or ‘primary quality’ with no discernible characteristics? It is only a name we give to the unknown. Instead, Berkeley argues, we should concentrate on what we can access with our senses. ‘Matter’ is not some ghost-like thing without extension of weight, but is instead what we normally take for granted as matter—something with weight, extension, that exists in space and time.Believe it or not, Hylas's argument was the same intellectual trap that Immanuel Kant fell into almost one hundred years later when he posited the unknowable ‘things-in-themselves’ (or noumena) that do not exist in space or time. If you substitute ‘noumena’ for ‘matter’ in these dialogues, you can see how far ahead of his time was Berkeley. Indeed, near the beginning of the 20th century, Edmund Husserl and Bertrand Russell—two of the most influential philosophers of the last 100 years—held a similar position, known as phenomenalism. Such a perspective is also conducive to science, because it shifts the emphasis away from metaphysics to physics.To sum up, Berkeley is a great writer and a penetrating thinker. The dialogues are short and entertaining; and, when stripped of some of their fallacies, most of his arguments still relevant today.

I have been looking for a weekly devotional for a while now. Nothing has fit until this one. I love it. It’s a lot bigger then I thought it would be - giving me much more room to write and making the words in it larger and easier to read. I love that it’s for women, so the topics really speak to me. It came today and I plan on starting in on it this evening. So happy with my purchase!!! <3

This book has beautiful artwork, but it's also practical. The layout is explained in the first few pages and it is helpful to follow it. While there isn't a right or wrong way to pray, this book reminds you to praise Him first, then talk to God about what's on your heart. A reflection page based on a verse and how you might practically use it in your daily life. This prayer journal has already helped me come to my Savior daily to praise Him and just talk to Him. A wonderful resource, I still can't believe it's only $10!

I loved the scripture and the special questions about one's life and prayer walk. The illustrations are fun to color too! Thought provoking and beautiful!

This prayer journal is even better than I expected! I love that it provides space for blessings I am grateful for and a space to write down areas I need growth and guidance from God. Some of the rooms in this book are just plain yucky. There are some okay ideas for projects, but many of them are not ones I would use in a child's room. If you are looking for practical ideas on getting started, choosing a color scheme or theme, tying the room together, etc. this book isn't very helpful. You can draw from the rooms pictured, but many of them are not attractive at all. There were a couple of rooms I did really like, but no helpful information about how the look was achieved. I would not recommend this book at all only because there are so many that are fifty times better out there!

We found out she was creative and clever from her first couple books, but this one puts her in a whole new league. Scheffler is becoming the Renoir of crafts and home design: eye catching ideas that lift the spirit and bring out the kid at heart (even for us who aren't kids anymore). I'm all thumbs, but I want to grab my paints and craft supplies and get cracking. Better yet, will you come and decorate my apartment, Carol?? Please!

Just got back from Maui and bought this book and could not have been happier with my purchase. We stayed for 3 days in Hana and we used this religiously and found the authors to be spot on with their recommendations. We ended up doing the road to Hana and then the other portion that the rental companies are not wild with you taking the rented vehicles on, but the locals told us was so beautiful and scenic. With 50+ miles to drive it is difficult (and unnecessary) to stop at every stop and see every waterfall that comes up. With this guide you are able to stop on the most breathtaking spots and those that are out of the way and worth it. We used this in conjuction with DK's top 10 Maui guide and these two small books had it all. Kudos to the authors on this, they helped make our anniversary trip special and maximized our time. Also, I would have to say that I was very much undecided on getting a Hana CD or this guide because though I am normally able to read in the car I thought it might be unable to do so due to all the turns. You take these turns extremely, and I do mean extremely slow, so if you can read in the car, it won't be a problem, to occasionally glance down to see what sight is coming up (unless of course you are the driver, in which case you need to just keep your eyes on the road). A very, very well done guide I would recommend for anyone traveling the road to Hana....a definite must see site for the deep raw beauty of East Maui...

Useful but not outstanding book. Followed this book on road to Hanna and it was misleading at times. Mileage data was not always correct. This road is very dangerous and that was not sufficiiently pointed out.You had better know a lot about Maui before you go trecking off with this book.

Most of the book is about the road to Hana and we aren't doing that. If you are then this book is great. I'll give it five stars because it's a great book. Just not exactly what I needed.

I love Maui. I have all the Maui guidebooks. I have property in Maui. So I had to get "Maui - Mile by Mile, 2nd edition, fully illustrated with over 150 photographs," with a nice glossy color cover.Helllllo... Once you get past the cover, all the pictures are black and white. To be more accurate, the pictures look like they came off a basement laser printer that's low on toner - complete with vertical stripes. Do you know what pictures of rainforests look like in black and white? Gray doormats. Sunsets look like the Hiroshima blast. Self-publishing is great, but shouldn't there be a disclaimer or something? Get Maui Revealed instead - Twice the information with color pictures.

This guidebook helped us find hikes our family enjoyed on a recent trip to Maui. On several occasions we made use of the Mile Marker locators for trailheads and parks that otherwise would have been difficult to find. Descriptions about the trails often enhanced our enjoyment or knowledge.A small size guidebook that was easy to pack in suitcase and have in the car.

After "Future Shock" I was anxious to see how Mr. Toffler would carry forward the account of accelerating change and what we can do differently to anticipate its impact by joining it. As we face this shift which includes monopolization of violence (law and order); sublimation of violence into law; and population's dependence on money I couldn't help wondering whether the next power shift should be ethics. That is stop wasting resources on protection from the ravages of greed and dishonesty. Could we develop a society that has learned how to control the selfish ego while harnessing the ingenuity and initiative that have often been driven by selfish greed? Thank you, Alvin, for opening my mind with deeply researched and very understandably expressed logical theories that summarize the human condition and enabling readers to "see the way forward."

Why should you read a book written almost 30 years ago? Because there are special people like the Toffler's that can see the future. This book I read when it was released and just re-read it. When I read it for the first time, my painful conversations with my blue-color friends, on why it was okay to be in a service economy vs.a manufacturing economy led to a painful breakdown on why we were moving toward a knowledge economy. This book needs to be read, so that, we all can understand, that just as it is ignorant to forget the past, it is just as erroneous to ignore the future. Toffler's book is an amazing seminal reading of how special people can see into the future. When you read it you will be amazed as to how almost everything predicted happened over the last 30 years did happen in retrospect. And it will lead you to understand why time is being compressed and what took 30 years to unfold will likely happen in 1/10 of the time.

Powershift is one of the best readers' books on new transformation at the edge of 21st Century with 25 assumptions on power, knowledge, wealth and violence. It serious has predicted the contribution on new forces arise to tower over the earth and recognized the potential of using information as a fighting tool, published the initiative to make command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) systems responsive to the fighter; to field these systems quickly; to capitalize on advances in technology; and to shape our doctrine to reflect these changes. Alvin Toffler has drawn the roadmap on how the societies speed toward their collision with tomorrow. The enduring success of nation in the 21st Century is assured by its inherent ability to capture change. This book `must read' for everyone who want to know the possibilities of the future.

I have read this book at least twice. Very insightful, even 25 years after first publication.

Reading this more than 20 years after it was written is very interesting; worth a second look.
