Lovely little book... I ordered it used but in very good condition and it's practually mint. It's small enough to fit into a small backpack or purse but large enough to hold comfortably. Note, the cover of the book I received is different than the one pictured, but that doesn't bother me.

I bought this for myself because I've always struggled with the formatting of citations. My high school daughter had a report she needed to work on, and this came to the rescue when she misunderstood the instructions for citing in-line. I'll be ordering another for myself, as this one is now in the back of HER school binder ;)

My fourth grade son will be able to use this, but not yet. I like how it's not a thick book and it's coated in plastic so that's nice too!

About the Author

Thomas Mann (1875–1955) was from Germany. At the age of 25, he published his first novel, Buddenbrooks. In 1924, The Magic Mountain was published, and five years later, Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Death in Venice is a chilling, cerebral, and beautifully rendered novella. An aging academic's Petrarchan fawning over a gilded youth in a city of supreme decadence, Mann's book seems to have prefigured Lolita as an examination of a deranged, if eloquent, man's search for the ideal beauty personified. It takes a while for things to get going, even in such a brief story, as we're asked to wade patiently through our (anti)-hero's convoluted theories and related philosophical rambling early on, but this ultimately lends some texture to his later unflagging hunt for the boy throughout Venice. As things get going and Mann starts to gun the narrative throttle (to some extent), we feel the suffocating reality of this cloistered, opulent, gradually decaying world. It is impossible to read this book and not feel the heat, smell the canals, and experience the perpetual sting of the protagonist's demented yearning. Definitely worth a read for any student of life or literature, or really anyone curious to take a peek into the abyss of an unsettled mind in an ostensibly peaceful place about to be rocked by misery.

I recently reread this for the first time in 40 years . . . . not all books I've revisit shout out that I had great taste in literature as an undergrad. Death in Venice is just so brilliant, I was left wondering what I could have understood so many years ago. Mann's language (at least as translated here) is among the best of any writer. The narrative is not what the novel is really about; rather like a great poet, Mann leads the reader through the back alleys that we've visited looking for what we imagined we need. Brilliant work.

Along with "The Turn of the Screw," "Heart of Darkness," "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," "The Bear," and "The Old Man and the Sea," Thomas Mann's story of a middle-aged writer's fatal obsession with a teenage boy in cholera-ridden Venice is one of the indisputable classic novellas of modern Western literature. Its weaving of Plato, Goethe, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Wagner and Freud into a condensed, taut, open-ended story is so elegantly achieved that it possibly outstrips even those other short masterpieces in concentrated power. At once alluring, creepy and in the end oddly moving, it's a book that penetrates the memory like few others. Of the many translations out there, Heim's is among the most lucid and lyrical. Indeed, it perhaps goes down too easily, missing that layer of Germanic formality that Mann used as a kind of parody of his main character's literary "dignity" and lofty reputation. I've read the story many times and it's always mesmerizing - a descent into the abyss of a man's soul that never fails to leave me shaken.

Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice" is as brilliant as advertised. Undoubtable, a literary masterpiece. One needs to make sure of the translation. The Dover edition which I read, was translated by Stanley Appelbaum and it was one of the best translations of this masterpiece I have read. The second chapter was a little difficult, but then there is a reason it is considered "the nightmare chapter" by most translators. Also, you might want to catch up on your Greek mythology before reading this book. It is everywhere in the book. Amazing work of art.

Thomas Mann is rightly regarded as a master among writers. In "Death in Venice" he explores a dying man's obsession with a beautiful youth at a beach hotel on the Lido Isle of Venice in prose so rich in descriptive imagery as to become poetry.

This book is a German classic first published in 1912. It is a must-read for anyone interested in modern German literature. This work has been reviewed by many notable critics and made into a film by renowned director Luchino Visconti in the early 1970's. Visconti commented: "The real subject of the film is the artist's search for perfection and the impossibility ever to find it. At that moment when he achieves absolute fulfillment, the artist's life is extinguished." This is a story of physical and moral decay of the artist in the putrid atmosphere of a morbid city. Vacationing on the Lido of Venice, he succumbs to the sight of a beautiful boy who lets him think of a perfect antique sculpture. Cholera rages in the city, but the artist cannot bear to absent himself from the boy. Thomas Mann leaves the cause of death open. Does Aschenbach, the protagonist, succumb to the disease, an age-induced prolonged suffering, or does he simply not want to live without the beautiful boy in sight?

As with many translated works, one has to struggle to uncover the brilliance of the author's original masterpiece. This version has an overabundance of typographical errors and awkward English language renderings of the complex German sentence structures. Such obstacles and inconveniences to the reader add one more element of irony to this tale of obsession and consequent disintegration of the tidy, well-ordered little universe of the protagonist. The scenic backdrop, psychological probings, and unfolding of the dramatic incidents are powerfully combined to draw the reader ever more closely into the vortex. In this tale, the bejeweled city of Venice is a scary place to be.

This classic novella lead to the production of a masterpiece movie in a later time. I was surprised at how short the original story was, yet was very pleased to see how much was packed in a short time. No spoilers here, just a mention of how well told is the tale of a soul bearing a private torture. Invoking compassion as well as insight, I came away with a greater understanding of a secret pain and with a renewed sense of compassion for something often overlooked in a very shallow world. Because of this insight I will now never take many things for granted, and will have a more compassionate look at people I think I know, or knew. For that I must say I am grateful and satisfied with my little purchase. RIP Thomas Mann x.

I've only tried one recipe from this book so far, but I've read many of them. These are great recipes. Many with very few ingredients. The recipes are very simple and the one I tried so far had great results. Everyone who tasted the cookies loved them! One co-worker asked for them 3 days in a row. And I just happened to have some with me all 3 days.I noticed that by using coconut flour, there is very little flour used in each recipe, but if you don't like to use a lot of eggs, you may not like a lot of these recipes, as there are about double the number of eggs used as in recipes with wheat flour.The end product was quite tasty.

Very disappointed, title says a delicious low- carb, gluten-free alternative to wheat, which is not true. Recipes have sugar, cornstarch, can beans, bottle barbecue sauce, cornmeal, brown sugar, powder sugar, 2 cups pineapple, 3 or more bananas, 3 to 6 cups strawberries, apples, peaches, honey, corn syrup, 2 cups carrots, and more. i have been low carbing for years, all these things are on our NO CAN EAT list. Plus no nutrition list. Was looking for recipes that are cooked with coconut flour, gluten-free and low carb. Sorry but feel the title gave me a false idea on what the cookbook was about. If you are not low carbing, you might like the book.

This is still, after all this time and all of the Coconut Flour cookbook options that have hit the market since, the best option for a Coconut Flour cookbook. Fife really took his time to get the measurements right and to be clear on exactly how to get the recipes to turn out correctly. I'm not saying none of the others are worth trying, as I have and use several. I am saying that this is the go to, the most accurate, the most usable and user friendly, not to mention actually useful in what it can help you cook, out of all of the books I've tried for cooking exclusively with Coconut Flour. The recipes are varied and there are about three times as many of them, as compared to the average. He gives low carb variations, so that you don't have to use sugar in everything, and there are some variations which allow for using other flour combinations if you want. His was the first I ever found, the first I ever tried, and is the Coconut Flour equivalent to The Joy Of Cooking corrected 1967 edition or the following 1975 edition, basically, the gold standard. Good luck in your efforts to eat healthier.

From the subtitle, which includes the words 'low carb', I assumed that there would be low-carb recipes that a person on a serious low-carb diet (Atkins, Bernstein's Diabetes Diet) could consume without going over their carb count for the meal.I was dismayed to find that not only was that not the case, nutrition information on the recipes was not included--- not even a 'net carb' count.In addition, many recipes included sugar. Some had 'reduced sugar', but sugar is still sugar. It's not a health food. There were no tested sugar-free versions of any of the recipes. A couple recipes also included bananas, which are a source of natural sugars that most low-carb dieters cannot eat.I feel the book could be improved greatly by the simple act of providing the nutritional information--- carbs, fat, protein and calories--- for each recipe. Removing the 'low-carb' from the subtitle would help keep people from mistakenly believing this was a book of low-carb recipes suitable for a low-carb or ketogenic diet.If your health does not require you to be on an actual low-carb diet and you are only concerned with gluten-free issues, or reducing your daily carb intake a little, there may be a lot of recipes in this book that you can use. The general information on using coconut flour may come in handy even for low-carbers (though I'm not sure I'd advise buying the book just for that.)It's also possible that if you are willing to look up the nutritional information on the ingredients and make adaptations, you could turn some of these recipes into low-carb and sugar-free versions. If you have that ability, this book may be a great addition to your recipe book collection.

This book offers an abundance of recipes with what the title says, Coconut Flour. But what's great about it is it offers a low sugar option for each and every recipe. Which is great for people who don't want all that sugar in their diet. It uses the Tuvia droplets as a partial substitute because you can't use that stuff as a complete substitute for sugar. So, it's part Truvia and part honey or whatever sweetener goes into the recipe. Which I find great. In fact I just ordered some shredded unsweetened coconut for the Coconut Muffins and I can't wait to try them. They sound so yummy. Coconut flour does not taste so much like coconut that you have to bake everything coconut. Blueberry Muffins, etc are perfect to cook with coconut flour. Try the book if you're looking to cut out white flour and want to use Coconut Flour as a substitute.

I wanted to try some coconut recipes. I don't have any allergy or dietary restrictions that made me buy this. I was just interested in eating healthier and I started to use coconut oil so I thought I'd try this as well.I must say the reviews here helped. I was prepared for the large amount of eggs needed for each recipe.We made the bacon muffins (which the name pretty much says it all) and I loved them. They are perfect for breakfast.Just heat them for 10 seconds in the microwave to warm them and go. I plan to make several of the muffin recipes forfast to-go breakfast ideas. You definitely can taste the eggs in these if that bothers you. But I loved it.We also made the chocolate cookies which were not a hit. It's possible that we got something wrong in the ingredients. Or maybe its that my flour wasn't sifted. But either way these cookies made us so thirsty we'd be running for water with every bite.I am hopeful that the bread recipes which are expected to be more dense would be good.I would still recommend this book to anyone wanting to test out coconut flour.

This book was fascinating. I had never heard about Asimov before coming across this book, but will definitely seek out more by him.

Isaac Asimov's Second Foundation completes the original Foundation trilogy. With the first Foundation regaining itself after book 2, a cabal seeks to uncover the mystery of the second Foundation. Advancing science has uncovered evidence of subtle neural manipulation that suggest second foundation influence. Plans are made rifle the data locked away in the Mule's former palace. This leads to megalomania on the part of the Kalgan ruler (the Mule's former stomping grounds) to make a power play against the Foundation. A young girl gets in on the action through the actions of her father and stowaways to Kalgan and eventually spends time on Trantor as war brakes out between Kalgan and the Foundation. The first Foundation's worst fears seem to come true with evidence of second Foundation tampering with minds of the first. Eventually the masterplan is uncovered and Hari Seldon's trajectory seems back on course.As with book 2, the scheming of the second Foundation is discussed, although the details are not revealed until the end, but everything hinges on probabilities and formulas embedded in Seldon's original work. At the heart is the notion that if people believe an invisible hand is guiding them, then they tend to become too complacent for their own good.

Asimov's "Foundation" series eventually grew to consist of six books, but it started out as a trilogy, with this as the third and final book. (Sort of like "Star Wars". Maybe there's a lesson somewhere in that.) The three main "Foundation" books may stand as Asimov's finest work, but, wherever you stand on that, they certainly qualify as top drawer classic sci-fi. I read this as a boy, and was amazed. Read it just now , the 4 book series, and still am. Sweeping through time and space Isaac , Doctor Asimov, weaves a fascinating tale of the future, viewed from an even more distant future. Sympathetic characters, a collection of intricately pictured imaginative worlds combine to tell a masterpiece. Should Rome come to mind, it would not be an accident, btw. Have read almost all of Asimov's books, and can not get enough!

Plagued in our day with violence by religious fundamentalists, and political extremists with "revolutionary" agendas, Asimov's foundation trilogy is well-worth reading, despite being "dated" in some ways. I see that he was struggling with what fundamentalist "millenarians" mean for us. There is certainly their explicit power agenda, which is obvious and may be extremely difficult to overcome, as indicated by the first foundation. Seldon's plan is the millennial, one must say quasi-religious, creed partially hidden in the background, and defended by the "propaganda" tool, the second foundation. Asimov presents this organization almost as a cancer that has a deviousness that makes it almost impossible to overcome, but perhaps not too omnipotent that it cannot be countered and controlled to a certain extent. The three novels, overall, have their clumsy spots, and Asimov is not one of the great creative geniuses, with respect to fiction-writing. Thus, there is much about which one can heap criticism. However, the totality of the effect of the novels (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation) is one of startling brilliance. While perhaps not in the pantheon of great fiction writers, Asimov has created in this series what must certainly be something of compelling intellectual interest, and ranks easily among the best science fiction I have read.

The third novel in Asimov's classic Trilogy. Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman once mentioned that the story underlying the Foundation Trilogy helped propel him into Economics. Strangely, it did the same for me. The notion of using a statistical model to accurately predict the course of events over a millennia is more than provocative. Asimov's writing style is a bit dated and lacks prose. But this story is one of his best. Don't buy this book until you've read the first two novels.
