Great book. Informative, entertaining, and easy to read. I love the diagrams so you can see what she's talking about. I learned more about cars in the first 5 minutes than what I've learned about cars from 20 + years of driving. I'm now trying to impart this knowledge to my 16 year old son. I don't think men know this stuff, either.
It helps me to make better decisions about my car, and keeps me informed when I'm not sure what things are, concerning my car. Dispels the myths, and is written in basic language with some visuals to help guide. I've recommended it to my brother who spends way too much on the huge car manuals and still doesn't get the information he needs. Would make a great gift!
Great book for the inexperienced auto mechanic (not just for girls). I bought it for my wife and daughter as a reference. But before I passed it off, I read it through myself. The author was an engineer but wanted to learn about whats under the hood, took mechanic courses, opened a shop cateri g primarily to women, and also started conducting worshops to educate women to either do routine car maintenance or at least select a good mechanic and talk intellingently with him. Also a good read as well.
I bought this book because I assumed that as a "girl's guide" it wouldn't be too bogged down with technical jargon and would be a nice, basic book about car maintenance. I was right, in a way. Unfortunately I think it's a little too dumbed-down, so it seems like it's condescending. At one point an oil change is likened to a manicure, and at another it literally describes gasoline as food for your car. Maybe I'm in the wrong for wanting a basic book and getting one a little TOO basic, but it does have helpful sections otherwise. It's been helpful when I've tried to diagnose problems with my car, or even learning little trivia bits about the indicator lights on your dash, etc. I just wish it wasn't as "tee-hee, girls can get a little dirty with their car too!" I like this book's information, but the delivery is just too stereotypical "ditzy broad works on car."
Amazing!! I've been waiting for a book like this. I feel 1000% more confident about my understanding of our car and speaking to car mechanics.
I read a review of this book in the BMW Car Club of America magazine "Roundel", immediately thought of my daughter-in-law who is taking interest in the maintenance of her car. Me being a car guy had to read it before giving it to her. Very well written and covers all the bases. It needs a better index.
Great boot for any car enthusiast that cares about fixing their car without getting taken advantage by garage mechanics. Excellent base for a beginner to car repair.
Listened to an NPR podcast featuring Patrice and instantly fell in love with her story. Had to get the book to find out more AND to gain some knowledge. So glad I did.
