I became a fan of the Dark Hunter books sort of by accident. When I got my shiny new kindle, I downloaded a lot of free books. Fantasy Lover was one of them. I liked it. So I looked up other books by the author. I saw that she had a series called the Dark Hunters, so I took down the list in order and started going through them. I fell irrevocably in love with Ash in the 2nd book and when "Acheron" came out, I read it twice back to back-and loved Ash more than ever. I've read all the books in the series at least twice. I love how Kenyon makes the books about one Hunter and his love, but builds and continues to build the storyline of all the hunters and the world around them. At least, until Retribution. I can honestly say that I've never been so disappointed in a book in my life. Jess was introduced in Zarek's book, so I was really looking forward to getting to know him better and hearing his story. But this was not a Dark Hunter book. There was no continuation of any of the previous story lines or history at all. If you've never read a Dark Hunter book, you could read Retribution and not miss a thing-it's a completely stand alone book. I waited a year to get answers to questions that were left unanswered from 2 and 3 books ago. I kept reading, thinking that any time now the Dark Hunters would appear. The series till now has been plenty complicated and didn't need a total new pantheon and direction-I mean we left the past few books with the fate of the freakin' world up in the air! I miss Ash. I miss Nick. I hate that Nick's gone to the dark side and want that resolved. I want to finally know what's the deal with Jared? And that's just the beginning- I mean, there are TONS of open ended plot lines left to resolve! Instead of getting new Dark Hunter books keeping the story going, we have "The Chronicles of Nick" which I can't pretend to understand the purpose of. Are we supposed to read these as Nick re-writing his history and then it will magically all make sense? And we have a book like Retribution, that doesn't even pretend to expand on any previous storyline. If it hadn't been for the tiny little "bonus scene" there would have been no bridge to past history at all. I don't understand why Kenyon took this direction, and I truly hope the next book falls back into the true Dark Hunter world. Now I'm going back to re-read the Dark Hunter books...

Sherrilyn Kenyon has weaved her unbelievable magic yet again. There is something that comes close to perfection when it comes to books written by Sherrilyn. There isn't a series of hers that I don't like. I even love her Historical's under the name Kinley MacGregor. She just has this way of pulling her characters totally out of the book as you read so they are dementedly playing around in your head. I can see, I can feel, and I so want to touch all her Alpha males.Retribution was just another prime example of why I love the Dark Hunter series so much. There are a great many series that I have read that got to the point and I have been `eh' and dropped them away and never picked up another book again. I have yet to even feel that urge for the Dark Hunter Series. I have to admit that when I started this book, I had to go digging around Zarek's book a bit to remember who Jess was. I read Zarek's book about three years ago and it was one of my favorites. Then it all clicked into place. Sherrilyn does an excellent job at taking a very troubled past and making the characters learn from it more than dwell on the fact they made mistakes. Yes, they know that there is a huge possibility that they may be suffering because they did horrible things, but they manage to understand all the things that they have done that is wrong. They accept and they move forward. Dark Hunters live forever, if they immersed themselves in there torment, like a lot of the fine Dark Hunters have, they miss something so essential. They lose the ability to love.In Jess's case, he is not adverse to the idea; he simple just can't open up fully to a woman till Abby crash lands back in his life. How easy was it to just root for Abby? God, for me I could feel so much of myself in her. Not that I ran out, got injected with demon blood so I could fight Dark Hunters or anything. But her entire personality belies how strong her physical person is. She can kick ass and take names. However, when she stops for a moment, her mind and emotions take over and you see a really scared, vulnerable woman hidden under all that petite hostility.I loved the addition of Sasha and Ren, was totally awesome! They sort of made the action scenes entertaining. Not only did this book provide for me the total fast paced action that every Dark Hunter book does (I have to say though, this one was way better than the last one), but it allowed us to watch Acheron's son to be born. Not only was that scene intense, but she entered in Artemis, and by god what the heck happened there?!?! Does Artie have a heart that none of us knew about! I was sobbing during that whole scene and I couldn't believe that Artie took responsibility for her mistakes. That she looked at it without those gold colored glasses she seems to always wear and realize that because of all of her mistakes, it made her lose the one person she actually wanted. I saw her in such a new light. Do I think that Artie is totally reformed? HA! What fun would she be if that was the case? I'm sure we will see more of the heifer-goddess in all her nasty glory.I could go on and on about this series, and how much I really enjoyed this book. Although it diverted a little from the last one, I have to say it was refreshing, exciting, and it made me sob. I loved this addition to the series!

I have every Dark Hunter Book! I'm an avid FAN of Sherrilyn Kenyon's book series's. But the Dark Hunter is my Fav. My suggestion is to not jump around in the series, but to start at the beginning and get to know ALL of the Charcters. They all play big parts in other books too. You really need to know you character's or you'll get to a part in the book and stop to say..."Now who was this?" "when did this person show up in the series?" And more.YES...BIG YES! Acheron IS the one book that is long awaited for! BUT if you do not know his story from the Beginning, up to His story, you will miss ALL the Pain & Suffering. ALL his Heartbreaks. Those who are IMPORTANT in knowing about...where Ach is concerned. And if you don't read up to his book, you could NEVER begin to feel all of Ach's emotions! I cried. I cheered. I got angry, and literally wanted to jump into the book just to beat the snot out of those whom caused him pain...One Goddess in particular!! And would love to get to know THE SIMI!!!

Normally, I love all of Kenyon's books. Maybe I'm not keen on the Native American stuff, but this was a hard read. What really bugged me was that Jess knew Abby as a child. He watched her grow up and participated in her life from infancy and then they fall in love and...yea. Seemed icky. And her irritation at his ability to read minds, but it's TOTALLY fine that she committed MURDER based on wrong assumptions and everyone was totally find with it. Yeah, no. It felt like lazy writing.

I bought this book in Kindle version and bought two other related kindle books at the same time. This is the one I rated lowest of the three. The first thing I did not like was that when I tried to go to a table of contents, there appeared to be none. I finally figured out that there actually is, but it is just not in the standard form. I am a bookie and not adept at this new electronic gizmo, so perhaps it is just me that needs updating.I have been planning an extensive trip to the maritime provinces for a couple of months and have a large collection of maps, tour guides, and brochures from the individual provinces themselves. In my opinion, Mr Gould's book was not helpful at all in helping me plan my trip. It is basically just a reflection of his own trip and the things he did, which are not necessarily what I want to see and do at all. I found the information given to be lacking in almost every area that I consider important to my personal trip planning.If you are looking for a short personal narrative, about some basic tourist quick trips, laced with occasional brief history or local lore, then you may find this book of use. There are several maps included that may be of interest to the casual traveler as well. I downloaded this book unsure of what to expect. The cover looked a bit homemade, which made me apprehensive. After reading, I can say the pictures inside the book are beautiful. The book is about the trip the author and his wife took. The writing is a bit choppy at times, but there are many tidbits I picked up that helped me in planning my own trip. I would recommend reading if you are thinking of traveling to the Canadian Maritime Provinces.

This book gave us a little taste of the trip my husband and I are planning for next June 2015. The colored photos were a huge bonus. We are going with a small motor home and tow vehicle, so some of the road info was helpful.

This was an in interesting little book and I found it pleasant reading and informative.The details providing historic details were entertaining.

Book is well written but not the kind of trip that I would plan. Still I did learn some good ideas.

With no table of contents or index, it is hard to find anything. You are stuck with a linear read through. What I could find was of limited usefulness.

Nice travelogue, well written, learned some useful tips. Disappointing in coverage of Nova Scotia. Definitely not a definitive source of information on Nova Scotia.

I really enjoyed reading Jim Gould's book on the Maritime Provinces of Canada. In this little gem of a book he paints vivid pictures of the history in interesting vignettes, but also relates fascinating conversations with the locals of the region. This is not just a travel book. Although Jim does include maps, pictures, and his own itinerary, with liberal advice on his favorite museums, eateries, and B&Bs, for me its value came in the intrigue he paints of the locales he visited. It's a quick read, with lots of great pictures, and reading the book will surely leave you wanting to visit this special part of Canada.

Although I have enjoyed JLD books in the past, this one was disappointing. They plot trudges along, only held up by various dangers that befall the main character. There is very little original material and it follows a well worn trail used in Westerns before it. Our heroine is a bit spunky, although static, and her two love interests are also standard Western style (blue-eyed kind cowboy & I'll-take-care-of-you boy from the West). The ending was the worst part of the book, as it ended very abruptly and will obviously be finished in a sequal. All in all this book just deserves a large yawn.

It smells like new book smell. But it's a choose-your-own-adventure?! Whaaaaaat? If you read the book as intended, making choices and skipping around as you go, experiencing life at its fullest AS NEIL, continue to paragraph [3]. If you decide to read straight through, skip to paragraph [4].[3] You've read the book! You experienced life as Neil! You got a plum gig as a kid star with good luck and hard work, discovered you liked boys and married the cutest one of all, had a couple of even cuter kids, did some magic tricks, drank some carefully crafted cocktails, and hosted the Tonys lots of times. You even got in a couple of jabs at some d-bags. If you had the time of your life (and who wouldn't, you're NEIL!), skip to paragraph [6]. If you hated the book (and therefore obviously hate FUN), skip to paragraph [5].[4] FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Nah, actually it's okay. I mean, you miss out on some of the fun, but as long as you have your short term memory in tact and the ability to maintain logical consistency in your head, you get through the book just fine. It was so fun, and everyone should be Neil Patrick Harris. You kind of wish you could keep being him, actually. FIVE STARS! If, after spending this quality time with Neil you want to read about another well-adjusted gay man with an awesome life, go get a copy of Anything Goes: My Autobiography by John Barrowman. If instead you want to spend MORE quality time with Neil, fire up Hulu and watch all 97 episode of Doogie Howser in a row. [The end!]

When this originally came out, I really wanted to pick it up, but despite seeing a bunch of levitating pics on Twitter around the release date I never did end up getting one.Then, my local library did this neat thing where after filling out a long questionnaire, one of the librarians would give me a list of book recommendations. This was one of the several books on that list so I decided to finally pick up a copy!Neil Patrick Harris is an amazing man—I remember watching Doogie Howser, M.D. when I was a kid; I've seen all of How I Met Your Mother and all three Harold & Kumar films; I've seen each of Tony Awards that he's hosted; I follow him on Twitter so I know about David and Gideon and Harper; but I knew there had to be a lot behind NPH that this book would show me.To read what I liked about this book, go to paragraph A.To read what I didn't like, go to paragraph C.To read about some frustrating parts, go to paragraph B.A) The book is clever in its concept. Who hasn't read a bunch of those Choose Your Own Adventure stories in their childhood? When using this concept with an autobiography, you get to choose what part of the life you want to go to. I did my best to avoid the ending for a while (while at the same time sometimes going down dead ends to get some of the quick "bad" endings out of the way) but I used a pencil to mark off pages I read (I'm a bit OCD so I wanted to make sure I read everything). In classic CYOA mode, I often kept my finger in the book so I could flip back if I chose a bad path.B) Because my OCD tendencies had me mark off each page as I read them, when I got near the end, I was able to go back and check which paths I didn't follow (to make sure I read everything). Unfortunately, I found five "chapters" that I couldn't get to. Two of these chapters were meant to be "hidden" (e.g. they mentioned how no other page led to this one). Two of them I think were impossible to get to because of typos. The final chapter was an option in one of the two typo chapters (I think the first option on page 23 should reference page 38, not page 39 and the third option on page 110 should reference page 191, not page 194). One other minor frustration was the Cryptic Crossword on page 150. There were several chapters that gave you a chance to flex your mind, but I've never been that good with Cryptic Crosswords. I'm surprised there weren't any instructions (since Cryptic Crosswords are more well known in the UK and aren't too popular in the US) but luckily I've seen them before. While reading the book, I was only able to get about three of the answers. After finishing the book, I had to spend about an hour really attacking the clues to complete the list. But then, when I tried placing the answers into the crossword grid, I found that there was one too few spaces! Technically two of the 4-letter answers could fit in the same part of the grid (neither having any impact on the final answer) but still—weird to create a puzzle without one unique solution.C) There were some parts of the story I felt were rushed through just because none of the chapters could really be more than a half dozen or so pages. I would have liked more than a short chapter about the Magic Castle (maybe because I'm lucky enough to have gotten inside it, I would have loved to hear more about what he does as President). Also, I think it would have been better as a traditional chronological biography. As I read the book jumping back and forth it was hard to get too invested in his life. NPH is a decent writer (although several chapters were ghost- or obviously-written by friends) but the gimmick was sort of played out after a few chapters.I'm glad I read it, and I won't hold it against my librarian (after all I did want to read it so it wasn't a bad suggestion, just a slightly disappointing one).

Although I did not make use of the unique "choose your own" feature (I am strictly a linear thinker when it comes to reading something like this, where I don't want to miss a single bit of this, even by accident), I loved reading about his life and the unusual sense of humor (and humility) he brings to describing his life. He was a favorite of mine from the Doogie Howser days, and I followed him right through the HIMYM years. The only thing I wish for (that's not in this book) is the secret to becoming his friend and hanging out with him, David, and Elton John, because that sounds AWESOME. Seriously, though, he is a genuinely nice guy who managed to avoid the worst Hollywood has to offer and who has become one-fourth of a close and loving family of his own. It's a rare thing in Hollywood to see someone who is self-aware and lucky enough to find someone who actually loves the real him. (I am a little jealous of his 40th birthday celebration, though; if anyone wants to know the secret to their partner's heart, it isn't the grand gestures but the proof that you really know someone and love him or her for exactly who they are, rather than what you wish they were.)
