For many years while she was a student and then a tax lawyer, SHARON KAY PENMAN slowly but steadily worked on a novel about the life of Richard III. After finishing the manuscript, however, her only copy was stolen from her car in a busy parking lot. Penman rewrote the entire novel that would become The Sunne in Splendour. When it was originally published in 1982, she quit her job to write full-time. Penman is the author of six critically acclaimed historical novels and four medieval mysteries, one of which was a finalist for an Edgar Award for Best First Mystery from the Mystery Writers of America.

Every time I read one of Sharon Kay Penman’s novels I’m awed by her writing. I’d give my soul if I could write historical fiction the way she does.Falls the Shadow is the second book of her Welsh Princes Trilogy and continues the story where Here Be Dragons leaves off. Llewellyn Ap Iorwerth dies and leaves his domain to Davydd, his son by Joanna, the illegitimate daughter of England’s King John. Davydd’s reign is relatively short and the struggle for dominance of Gwynnyd falls to the sons of Llewellyn’s elder, but illegitimate son Gruffydd. Llewellyn favored his grandson and namesake Llelo, and has managed to impart to him both his military aptitude and his understanding of the need for Wales to be united against the constantly encroaching English.The book, however soon diverges to tell the story of Simon de Montfort and his family. King Henry III’s sister, Nell, widowed at a young age, forsakes her vow of chastity to marry de Montfort, much against her brother’s wishes. The relationship between the monarch and his brother-in-law is intermittently stormy and at one point he is exiled from England.Henry III proves a devastatingly inept monarch, both militarily and politically, and, although Simon de Montfort has sworn fealty to him, he eventually becomes the leader of a rebellion by the English barons. They attempt to impose a set of provisions on Henry which were a logical extension of the Magna Carta. The King, however, is convinced that he answers only to God and will brook no interference.Penman astutely illustrates how a mischance or a happenstance can dramatically alter the course of history. What if Simon de Montfort’s eldest son, Harry, had not been so trusting? What if his second son Bran had been more trustworthy and competent? The course of English history might have been entirely different.Penman paints a vivid picture of England and Wales in the 13th century. She relates the tragic plight of the Jews of that era who were the lowest and most vulnerable residents in the realm. One of the most remarkable characters in her story is Thomas Fitz Thomas, the mayor of London, a staunch supporter of Simon de Montfort, who tries to protect the Jews of his city.Prior to reading this book I knew absolutely nothing about Simon de Montfort and his noble struggle. One of the reasons I love reading Sharon Kay Penman’s books is that she fills in glaring gaps in my knowledge of English history. At the same time, she is a masterful story teller.

Although more a fan of Henry VII, I’ve never believed the Shakespearean Richard III. Having said that, neither do I believe he was the saint put forth by the Richard III Society, mostly because of the rage-filled execution (murder), without trial or defense, of his close friend, since childhood, of Will Hastings. Hardly the act of a saintly king. Also, I believe he wasn’t innocent, if nothing else except pre-knowledge, of the murder of poor Henry VI. I do not believe he murdered the sons of his brother Edward IV, the renowned Princes in the Tower. My gut feeling, along with Penman’s belief, is that sorry deed must be laid at the feet of the overly ambitious and soulless Duke of Buckingham.Was Richard III the evil, cruel, bitter and twisted king portrayed by William Shakespeare? Most properly not. Propaganda is propaganda, after all, even for those times. Did he have the right to take the throne? There I think is the real debate. To set aside his beloved brother’s family, sons and daughters that he confessed to love most devotedly is not the act of a decent man. It was the act of a man who wanted to be king, the act of a man, like so many others, willing to put aside right and wrong, family obligation, a dying king’s request; knowing endangering the lives of all of Edward’s children, for personal gain, personal glory, personal greed. Richard III was no saint.

This is the kind of book that has made me a fan of historical fiction. The characters are rich and complete, the amount of dedication it takes to write a book of this period, with the twist and turns of fate, and the hearts of English kings, barons and lords, flat amazes me!I don't often get so involved with a character in a book that I shed tears when that character dies on the pages. And I've cried several times reading this series. I love the way the author completes each character, showing the good side, as well as the bad, she has no favorites, but then neither does fate. From Llewelyn and Joanna, to Simon and Nell, I feel like I was there, in the cleaner world of the 12 century, the birds, the sky, the rivers, and mountains, all so crisp and clear.Every time I finish a book, I am reluctant to start another, for fear that because favorite characters have passed from the story, I will have a hard time starting the next one, but the transitions are smooth and easy to slip into.

Had to have this book for a class, I did not enjoy the book. I felt that the book was disorganized, and jumped around too much, especially in the first half of the book. I wish it would have stayed consistent in the timeline.

Nice Book, great artwork in a concise subject related collection, I am not much for the super big war-bots ( I know from experience they would just be fire-magnets and larger targets- you couldnt armor them enough to survive the amount of enemy attention they would garner) but I do love the power armor tthat is the way to go! Probably get the second book in a couple of months after I get back from oversea's. A book on just power armor and combat exoskeletons I would buy instantaneously as well.Nice work!thanksChris

This book is pretty self explanatory. Nuthin' But Mech delivers very cool mech designs from some pretty talented artists working in the entertainment industry. If you like mech designs, this book will show from simple to complex designs. Even though there is not much description from each artist on their process and there was not a tutorial or process of making the designs, it still inspires and motivates artists who would like to become mech designers themselves. Even if you are not an artist, the book will keep you engaged within each illustration.For more information and art by these artist, the book also gives the blog site where more mech can be found.

Yes, You can always find loads of pretty pics on line of mechanicals, but sometimes its just fun to have some hard copies of them, to bring out and share w visiting friends, to show on your book shelf, (if they still make those) heh! And the price was great! a nice little splurge for me for the month.Just wish it was bigger, hardback, more pics! Don't we always? ;)It DOES have every page filled w pics! I just don't want the book to end, tis all.

The so-called "Homeric Hymns" were songs of praise to ancient Greek deities. They were intended to be used as part of specific rituals of worship. They were not written by Homer, but by people who obviously admired Homer and wanted to honor him by emulating his style. Most of them are brief and follow a definite formula, but some of the longer ones have strong narrative lines that are quite engrossing. The Hymn to Hermes is our prime source for the story of the infant Hermes stealing the cattle of Apollo. (I found this hymn in particular to be delightful.) The Hymn to Demeter is probably the most valuable to people interested in the ancient Greek culture and religion. It tells a detailed story that gives tantalizing hints about the Eleusian rituals. I had never heard of the Homeric Hymns despite a lifelong interest in myth and ancient history. They really should be better known. This particular translation is extremely clear and unambiguous in addition to being, in some cases, extraordinarily beautiful poetry. I was very impressed with the way translator Sarah Ruden was able to switch voices for the different hymns. She takes a saucily flirtatious tone with the Hymn to Aphrodite that I found especially pleasing.My only quibble, however minor it may seem to some people, is that the glossary and notes are not very helpful at all. For example, there will be a footnote for Hera, who is probably familiar to anyone studying mythology. But then when some really obscure name occurs, there is no footnote. A glossary lists most of the names of characters, but ignores place names. The word you need to know the meaning of may turn out to be a place instead of a person. One of the frequently used devices is a listing of all the famous shrines to the deity being addressed. Good luck figuring out what's being talked about. I hope there will be a new edition that would have an improved glossary and perhaps a map denoting the many places mentioned. But this is more than made up for by the really excellent introduction by Sheila Murnaghan. Highly recommended.

Required reading for Greek and Roman Mythology, but I'm happy about it. It seems to be an excellent and enjoyable translation, with good notes to clarify meanings and identities. If you're into Greek Mythology, the hymns here definitely add a bit of depth to the experience. The stories aren't new, but they're told with a different flow to them, and so are just as fun to read again as they were the first time.

This was a very readable translation, and it proved to me to be an excellent resource for the study of mythology. This helps to provide background for many works that came later including Ovid's Metamorphoses and many plays, and helps to establish a baseline to demonstrate the change in the style in mythology that occurred over time.

I needed this book for a class I am taking. Another online book company wanted way, way WAY, more for it. It is what I needed for a GREAT price.

To the importance of writers and readers knowing their pastime's heritage, and feeling less ravaged both by time's erosion and man's destructive habits, it is a pleasure to the aesthetic intellect that some important narratives from the ancient world are extant (survived) fairly complete, or atleast so that we can fill in the gaps. One rougher, but patience-eliciting book you may want to have in your collection came out surprisingly enough not too long ago of previously undiscovered works of the playwright who held the most esteem and civil positions as well at Athen's height of glory, though he impressed the divinity-inclined public with works that included man's issues as equally important to that of the gods: namely, Sophocles; the book contains some eighty fragments of plays mentioned in related records, but thought not to have been extant, and is entitled The Lost Sophocles. I'm sure Amazon can get you a copy. It feels good to get more of the overall picture of the classical eras, doesn't it? Homeric Hymns fills my need I first garnered after reading his Iliad Odyssey. Also, ironically enough, a couple years back, as the result of an artifact thief originally, Poetry Magazine from Chicago's Poetry Foundation was able to print the missing parts of Anaeus's run from the enflamed streets of Troy, his offspring in his arms, and the elaboration of the death of his wife and her appearance to him to give a more complete prelude to the prophetic theme Virgil intended about the coming of Rome, and that empire's original wish to have no higherarchies and simply be the common man's eternal keeper of world peace. Yet, though the book of Homeric Hymns is still slim, and easily enough read in translation for today's youth and their growing interest in these kinds of literature, and yet leaves the body of work that we ascribe to having been written by whoever Homer was, it is completely satisfying, as well as being what Homer obviously intended it to be: a short, understandably focused approach to the combination culture of religion, rule and intent, and art -- namely the first somewhat near cursive, definitely written language and the further launching of that early literature, telling history as the Greeks saw it, poetry, for choralizing, singing, speaking, teaching, etc. Communication, the essential music to our relating and surviving. Play a game with yourself when reading these, and that is to look for contrasts in irony; that was an integral element in the origins of literature... -- Tom Lee...

Excellent book, even with a few errors. This is a good reference book for people interested in conspiracy theories. There were a few errors. The author said the social security administration ordered 200million rounds of ammo, actually the administration ordered 475,000 rounds of ammo. It was the entire DHS that ordered the 200 million rounds. The other mistake I saw was the authors chapter on voter suppression. Voter ID laws are meant to prevent fraud. I work in a store where you need a photo ID to pick up an item, even small items like pens or notebooks. Other than that, I liked this book and will order another one for an Xmas gift for a relative.
