Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good tips and pieces of advice. However, much of it is what we already know: get enough sleep, eat healthy, stimulate your mind, reduce cholesterol, increase fiber intake, etc... Then throw in some medical science and PET scans from a MD, and mix in some fluff.Overall: 3/5 stars, a self help book that draws upon what we already know (or should know).
VERY informative and thought-provoking book. I am an RN and was never taught 90% of the science Dr. Amen discusses. I expect most physicians aren't taught most of these things either---which is sad. Traditional/modern medicine has such a heavy focus on drugs AND Dr's having NO time to teach patients, much less continue to educate themselves, hence, they are passing on outdated, inadequate instruction to patients AND handing out drugs like candy. Please ladies, educate yourselves as much as you can, or pay the price. This book is an excellent start to get you to think about your health as a woman, why you may feel the way you do, and how or brains and bodies differ from men. I could go on and on but suffice it to say, I am impressed and purchas d more copies for girlfriends as Christmas gifts.
Especially a book with a hot pink cover?I am a man in my 50's and I wouldn't be seen dead in public reading a book with a hot pink cover with a title so boldly indicating that the target readership is women.As well, it appears that throughout my life I have been constantly mystified about my relationships with women and their behaviour, leading to nothing but confusion and a trail of sad stories. I would like to believe that I played no negative part, but of course I do take responsibility for my own, rather ordinary, actions. The thing that I have found common to most of my experiences has been my lack of understanding regarding the female species and how their unique blend of hormone cocktails affects them.And then I read this book.If this book was available to me 25 years ago, then I am sure my life would have been different. And in this moment, it hasn't turned me into an expert, but I really think that my level of understanding of women has sky-rocketed, and now my sad stories are more about having excellent learning experiences from where I can move on (and I reckon there's quite few more years ahead to enjoy). I have also implemented some of the health tips which are equally applicable to men, and I have already noticed some significant differences, after only two weeks. So that's two big bases covered - health and relationships.Therefore, if you can read, then I give my fullest recommendation to read this book. Especially if you are a man. And even more so if you are a man in your late teens/early 20's forging ahead with your own life. Just read it in the privacy of your own home like I did! A must read.
This is the same info in a pink 'for girls' cover with the word 'female' in front of the word 'brain' as his other books. For in depth assessments, food recipes and other tools, you are required to go to his website and pay additonal fees for them. His book has such groundbreaking info as getting proper sleep, not smoking, eating healthy and exercising to power your brain. Much of the same information is stated again and again throughtout the book. (Was he being paid by the word??) Don't waste your money.
Women's emotions are elusive to even women. Come on ladies, you know it's true. I have heard countless women tell me this very fact and the subject, whether between men, women or men and women, women's emotions are challenging to approach and understand with the right amount of delicacy every time. What's beautiful about this book is that explains, with in depth research, how women can manage their emotions with food, nutrition, exercise and activities that help maintain the perfect balance of hormones within their bodies. After all, emotions only come about because of hormones...control the hormones and you control the emotions. I'm a man and I was grateful to read this so I know what a woman is going through. Daniel Amen has several clinics throughout the U.S. and is growing in popularity, but I sure would love to see a LOT more people-healthcare practitioners, women and men-learning what he is teaching.
I loved the volume of useful information provided from this doctor's 20+ years of observation of the structures of the brain as they relate to being both a current physical health indicator, and a harbinger of future health. He includes lots of great information about how our own daily health habits can affect our brain both positively and negatively, and how to make changes that really matter to your brain's long term health. I had several AHA moments while reading this, and it really got me motivated (which is a hard thing to do) to make some basic changes in my lifestyle to support my brain's long term health. This is a must read if you want to have the tools to maintain a healthy brain now and for the long haul as you go into your golden years.
Dr Amen has written several controversial books.I have read 2 and watched many interviews. Most recent was on Dr M. Oz and on PBS. Both within the last week. Both recomend him.After a many year study it has been concluded that 75% of the people on anti-depressants are receiving no relief!!!!!!Most anti-depressants are used for off label reasons...yes this is legal.I purchased this book because it applies to women and I read the other 2 books for the general population.The women's brain is different than men.He is an expert....world renowned. His credentials are amazing. My doctor said "all of his collegues recomend him".I have been medicated for over 10 years by various doctors to no avail.I finally got the correct diagnosis of ADD by reading his first book. My grandson has ADHD.....After reading two of his previous books I am now medication free and am working on behavior, diet, and suplements.I CHOOSE not to be medicated. This applys to all however. Look him up.
