This is one of the best books I have read this year. Alvesson is sharp, but the first part of the book dealing with the problem is far better than the second part dealing with the solutions, as is often the case in Critical Theory. The book is all the things the authors say a good book should be like; interesting, meaningful, and well written, even, at times, funny. The problem of nonsense literature in the social sciences is real and the critique is to the point.Where the reader had wanted more is first of all on bibliometrics. The authors do not show anywhere that they have a deeper understanding of how ex. Google Scholar works and where its shortcomings are. They also make a false claim on this topic, that most databases can eliminate self-citations (p. 127). The general solutions offered in the book are too vague and too lenient, almost naive; existing systems should be used with a critical sense - "a sensitive and nuanced interpretation and evaluation of bibliometrics", p. 124. Good luck) and students should be given the information they need to judge teaching quality (p. 133). Good lu...There are many good ideas, like the need for scholars to focus more on reading and to read broader, but no real suggestion has to how this shift is possible. When the reader puts down the book it's still Google Scholar, Web of Science and ABS Academic Journal Guide that counts and nothing in the book changes that, unfortunately.
