I have been doing fine art printing using both inkjets and a Lightjet lab for several years. Uwe's book is right on the money. It confirms tips and techniques I have learned through my own testing as well as several new approaches that have improved my end result. The section on calibrating and white point sets alone are worth the price of the book.My only disagreement would be to calibrate at full brightness to let the software adjust the levels. It is most accurate and you never worry about how the monitor and computer are set.
This book is a masterpiece and essential reading for anyone interested in fine arts printing. I'm about half way through reading the book and have only discovered one point that I (and many others who edit photographs) might disagree with. Steinmuller and Gulbins suggest a monitor calibration using 120 cd/m2 at D65 for print/editing, which is too bright and too blue according to the recommended settings I've read about and have used in practice. I use luminance values of below 100 cd/m2 and monitor a Kelvin temperature of D55 to better match the monitor with the final print.Otherwise, the book is a cornucopia of information and resources.
I bought this because I was ready to upgrade to a better printer. And I have been looking to better understand the fine art printing process for digital photos. This book was very informative. In places, it got a bit too technical. But it is organized clearly; you can very easily find the part of most interest to you; and it is very neutral in its information. The one weakness is that it really focuses on Photoshop use and does not get into other software. But that didn't bother me because it is a book focused on printing, not on processing with software. There are other books and online resources for that! This book did ultimately help me select a better, more sophisticated printer for my current needs. That was the most helpful part for me.
What I expect to get from a book on printing would a lot of information about color management, output sharpening, paper selection, and some things I probably never thought about. The color management chapter starts off with an explanation as to why the authors aren't going to "waste" time and space in their book on color management, stating it's "the most demanding subject in digital photography", but it's covered in many other books so if you want to learn about it you should buy a book about it. When I got to the part about sharpening, they provided no information other than it's important and one of the authors happens to have written a book about it that you should buy. They do provide a list of papers they "like", but virtually no useful information about them. Most of them only had a brief sample of the technical data provided by the manufacturer with no comments. And the ones that did have comments were brief like "Great. One of our favorites", or "Very sharp".The bulk of the book is actually screenshots of how to use various pieces of software and hardware, taking up a lot of space but providing virtually no or little information. Since the book was published in 2006, and it's now 2012, all of the screenshots and accompanying text is obsolete. And even back in 2006, this information is basic information that would be included with the instructions for the device you bought.
I bought this book (1) because I'm planning on buying a new printer capable of making fairly large prints and I want to get the best out of it and (2) because I've read other things Uwe Steinmueller has written and have admired his HDR photographs. The book combines information about color management, which you get in almost any moderately advanced text, with information that's specific to printing, notably on paper selection and workflow. It's a useful combination of topics. the text is well written and the illustrations are printed very well and are useful. You do have to have familiarity with Photoshop CS 2 or later. Befroe you print, take the author's advice about calibrating your monitor, and especially about setting the brightness. There's a logical progression from calibrating your printer up through printing and presenting the work. Although there is a lot of detail, it's presented well enough so that you don't drown in it. The only criticism I have is that the first 55-60 pages seem to have been written or perhaps revised without good editing, so there's some annoying duplication of information about paper weight and thickness, among other things. Apart from that, it's an excellent manual for making prints suitable for display.
It's the best reference book I've come across for printing in the fine art genre. Though I'm reading it straight through, my notes are based on the index so that I can group all of the information on one point in one place for quicker reference when I'm deciding what, and how to print an image. It's also been invaluable for paper choices and for printers and inks. An all around terrific reference. I highly recommend it.
EXCELLENT if you are interested in getting the most from a true high quality photo printers. Rooky Nook certainly are becoming the very best in photography education.I still shoot and process both color negatives, transparencies and B&W film..but I scan and print digitally. This is the book that has made that part of the learning so much easier. It is not "Fine Art Printing Made Simple". It is however a serious book for one who wants to go further than the push of the auto button.
