This is the best written introductory JSP book I've seen (and I've looked at a lot). It's worth the price for just the clear and detailed discussion on Packaging Java Web Applications (Chapter 2 and Appendix D). I spent hours looking for this info with Web searches and in other JSP books. None of the other sources were clear or complete.The content matches the title. It's about JSP not JavaBeans, etc.

Typical to an O'reilly book, this book is not a bad introduction to Java Server Pages (JSP). It teaches the basics: what is a JSP, what is a Servlet, how to use them, what are the best practices for JSPs, etc. In my opinion it provides a fairly comprehensive tutorial. There is also a chapter about a design model (the MVC model) which the author recommends. However, despite all this I still do not recommend this book. Despite the fact that "Java Server Pages" seems to be a very comprehensive introduction for JSPs, it really isn't. Why do I say this? Three main reasons: First thing, the author uses his classes all across the book, which makes it somewhat useless for the developer seeking to see how to deal withprogramming issues. All it teaches you is how to use the author's classes - but nothing besides!! With all due respect, this is a book about JSPs, not about O'reilly classes - and using premade classes considerbly hinders learning!Second, the author seems to forget there are many ways of using JSPs and almost exclusively focuses on Java Beans. Well, I have been using JSPs for almost two years now, commercially, and WE DON'T USE JAVA BEANS. It's not that I'm saying it is a wrong approach, but it isn't the ONLY approach - which is what the author continuously states. Last, the author was using Tomcat, so there were Tomcat configuration tutorials all over the book. Since I don't use Tomcat (and I assume, many other people don't use it either), I felt as spending so much space on Tomcat was a waste. It would've been better if fewer subjects were covered, but examples on more Application Servers were given. (Similar to "More Servlets" by Marty Hall which gave each example for 3-4 different servers).To summarize: I believe that there are better books than this one, however, it does teach the basic technology. After reading the book I can definitely say I learned new things - however, I would still recommend turning to another JSP book.

This a primer that describes the background JSP and server side programming in Java, as well it is a rather good tutorial for developing JSP. The JSP technology is based on the servlet technology, so it is very useful (I would say a must) to read a book on servlets first. "Java Servlet Programming" from Hunter & Crawford makes a good reading companion. It is complete and generally well written, but I have some points of critique.The book consists of 3 parts (excl. appendices): a) Part 1 "JSP Application Basics" gives a good theoretical overview of the JSP technology and environment. b) Part 2 "JSP Appication Development" gives a complete overview for the developer of the actual JSP pages. But it also has stuff that is only relevant for Java developers (such a Java primer) and lots of examples that can only be understood by reading the chapters in part 3 of the book, meant for Java developers. c) Part 3 "JSP and J2EE and JSP Component Development" is meant for the hardcore Java developer and describes the development of Java Beans and JSP custom actions. It has very strong chapters about how JSP fits in the J2EE architecture and how it combines with servlets. There is also a short chapter about Java Beans, the description is good but the example is incomplete. The last two chapters about JSP Custom Actions and Database Access Components are difficult and rather messy.General points of critique: A) The JSP architecture has as weakness that it does not clearly separate development of HTML content and Java code. Basically this technology shifts the burden from the Java servlet developer to the HTML content developer, who is now very afraid to break Java code embedded in the HTML page. This book suffers from the same problem: the chapter about JSP application development is written too much from a Java development background with too less consideration for the needs of the HTML developer. B) Things are not always explained in the right order, which makes examples difficult to understand. Especially the relation between JSP custom actions and tag libraries became clear to me at the very last moment.

I cannot understand why some people did not like this book. It is definetly those kind of books that make O'Reilly one of the most respectful tech editors. I also have Core Servlets and JSP, which is awful compared to this one. The Core book just say 'do that to get that'. It does not say why, when, the advantages, drawbacks, alternatives, etc. It is just a reference book, it does not teach you anything useful, just the JSP syntax, so you may think that you know JSP, but you actually don't. I had this feeling because I first read the Core book. But then when I read the O'Reilly one I realized that I did not know anything about JSP. I was ashamed of thinking I once knew it. To conclude: If you want to be a JSP specialist buy the O'Reilly's book. If you want to know the syntax of JSP by the Core one.

"Michelangelo: Master of the Italian Renaissance" is part of the subperb Masters of Art series that was re-published in the United States. The series was originally published in Italy and characteristic of Italian children's books feautured outstanding illustrations. Simone Boni and L.R. Galante are two of the finest illustrators to ever work in children's literature. They are known for their intensely detailed architectural style of historical illustration. In this book, they do an outstanding job of recreating Renaissance Italy. As for the story line, it well written and covers all the key episodes in Michelangelo's long and very productive life. This book can be purchased used for almost nothing. My bet is that after you purchase your first volume of the Masters of Art series, you will like me purchase all of the books in the series. Highly recommended.

If you are seeking a way to identify with Early Italian Art, this is your series.Each artist is depicted by Scala gloriously, in full, vibrant color on a glossy paper that really brings the art up and out for us to see.I highly recommend all of the books in this series.And for perhaps the first time you will understand the true genius and greatness of this period in Italian art.

This 11 x 12.6 inches (28 x 32 cm) book, beautifully published on crispy white glossy paper, contains way over 100 excellent color reproductions mostly of a big size. The color accuracy is as good as it can get. The book is divided into chapters reflecting chronological periods of the artist's life described in detail. The art works are accompanied by thorough analysis. There are also chapters containing life chronology, glossary, selected bibliography, and photographic credits. This is a spectacular book.

As a sixth grade teacher, I found this book to be a fascinating resource for students. The book is sectioned by Michelangelo's works, such as by sculptures, paintings, and architectural works. The photos are beautifully displayed and each work has a description for the reader. In addition, a chronological biography is outlined page after page as it relates to his works. Information such as his lifestyle, personal events, and affiliations and accomplishments are described. What's great about the book is the fact that it includes information about the renaissaince, such as other artists and important figures of the times. This gives the reader a feel for the period and gives an opportunity to make connections to its significance in time. A great book for both young readers and adults.

I found this book very useful in gathering information to present to children about the life of Michelangelo. It is very clear how the information is organized in relation to the general facts of history and the general topics of artwork and masterpieces of that day. Along with this general information, the book includes references in each section that specifically link this information to the life and work of Michelangelo.

I heard about this book through the author's friend, when I read what it was about, I was excited to read it. I quickly read it and thoroughly enjoyed the journey of Lydia and her family. I can fully relate to the author's story and inner struggle and since I'm currently figuring out my own adventure, it was great fun to travel this journey through the family.It's a great story about how when we remove ourselves from what everyone else expects from us, that we are able to deeply understand what we want for ourselves and the world around us.I just hope I can give my own son some of these same adventures.

Lydia's story is compelling because she took a leap of faith to do something she felt called to do. She's bored by the comfort of status quo and has the courage to follow her heart, even when she doesn't always know where that will lead. But Lydia is adventurous, rises to challenges, and now has a meaningful impact on many lives. She has figured out how to partner with communities in need, which, in my view, is the most effective way to effect change. Great story about a very impressive woman and the path she created for herself.

Just what I needed at a moment when I felt I was at a crossroads in my life. Lydia’s courage to continue to seek and grow and her passion to help build a better life for those in need as encouraged me to take a leap of faith.

I just returned from seeing first hand the Go Philanthropic sponsored programs in SE Asia. As part of a staff-lead trip, six of us experienced the three different cultures of Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam; yet all three countries have the common thread of promoting education as the path to each country's economic development. Kudos to Lydia Dean for helping so many children in these countries realize the dream of an education by supporting local people and programs. Her book reinforced for me that when individuals follow their passions and gut feelings, the results can be far-reaching and universally positive.

This well-written memoir follows Lydia's journey from an unhappy upscale life (a typical successful life in the suburbs) to a life of fulfillment and helping others (in the slums of India and other countries). I enjoyed following Lydia's life story and was impressed with her honesty and willingness and guts to take risks that led her to make her life's passion a reality. A thought provoking story that will lead you to question, discover and take action to make your passions, however small or big, come true.

Genuine. Sincere. Courageous. Raw. Inspirational. Brings one back to thinking about the essence of life.....following your heart, dreams, and gut even if it's outside of "traditional norms." Lydia's courage to continue to help others never ceases and in the end she helps remind readers that to truly live one's life to the fullest can sometimes mean getting out of traditional "comfort zones." Allowing oneself to do this is how one truly lives.

A real page turner and easy read. Very inspiring how young wife and mother can accomplish so much by following her dream to make a difference in the world. Courageous and determined with support from her husband she moves to Costa Rica, to France, back to the states, and travels all over the world. She often travels alone witnessing extreme poverty, The story of her journey is a warm family story and I hated to reach the last page. I wanted to read more but admit I am impressed that in all of her accomplishments she found the time to document and write such a moving, fantastic story.

To begin with, this book is quite large, measuring 11"X13"X2.5" Thick, so unless you have a place to display it, I wouldn't recommend it. On the other hand, I found it to be very interesting as it encompasses the era of my time in the US Navy, including the Viet Nam war era. I found many familure faces in the book, and some that I know quite well. It is beautifully bound in silver colored leather, with a large embroidered US Navy patch decorating the front cover. The book tells the story of the US Navy from 1775 until 2003, it probably cost around $150 new, but if you shop around on Amazon and Ebay, you can find used copies for as little as 10 or 15 bucks. I heartily recommend it to "Old Salts" and even "young Salts" if they have an interest in the US Navy. Regards to all: Mike

I wanted a gift for my grandfather this year and I found this book for around 3 dollars in great condidtion. Although it did not arrive via prime shipping in time for Christmas I am glad that I saved around $85 on it. It is a nice blue hardcover with over 100 years of history. Great for military model building history buffs. His dad was in the Navy and I thought he might appreciate the gesture. His father was In world war two serving on a smaller battleship that took IWO-GIMA.I would recommend this for its new condition and for a few dollars in a New condition it is worth the wait.

We were at a friends house and they had this book and his was very interested in it but we were not there long enough for him to look through even a quarter of the book SO! I was expecting something more along the line of an encyclopedia. This is a chronological history that reads very very poorly. I wanted to use this as a coffee table book but the way it reads was not condusive of that.

“The Balkans,” Winston Churchill is reputed to have said, “produce more history than can be consumed locally.” This remark, quoted on the first page of this book, is fully borne out in the following pages that tell the colorful story of this land from the paleolithic to 2016. The author has mastered an amazing amount of information and presents it in a pleasant, almost conversational style.Exactly what is a “Traveller's History”? No explanation is offered, but the designation probably explains why there are no footnote or endnote references such as one would expect in “A Scholar's History.” At the end of the book, there is a list of twenty books of “Further Reading,” all in English. There is, however, a “Historical Gazetteer” with descriptions of 26 important cities and page references to where they are mentioned. A list of ruler's is also helpful. I would have liked more references, but the book should be judged by what it set out to do.The author's treatment of the wars of the 1990s is even-handed. They realized the aspirations of the Croats over 900 years for independence, yet they also undoubtedly involved war crimes on all sides. The author is a good story teller; I found not a dull page.

I recently visited Croatia because may Maternal grandparents are from the area. Magnificent. Wish I would have read this book and several others before embarking on this journey. Regardless, I still love this book and will enjoy my next visit even more.

This book provides a good introduction to the long and turbulent history of the Balkan countries, with emphasis on Croatia. If you want to be an informed traveler, this is the right book. I found it very useful in connection with our travel in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina

Very well written and interesting. The earliest history is a bit of a slog but worth it. By the end, I felt I had a better appreciation for the divisions which lead to the breakup of Yugoslavia, which were not entirely religious (as I initially thought). The book also has very interesting maps of ancient Croatia and how the county/region evolved over time.

Excellent and well written. This is a great history book and should be required reading for anyone going to Croatia. I have been there twice and guides were very reluctant to discuss the history. A must and easy read.

As introduction, I am a practicing PMP certified project manager. I use this system.The brilliant part is this book lays out a very simple matrix for tracking and reporting key project deliverables, identifying responsible parties, and reporting progress to higher management in a compact, executive-friendly format. After I read this book, I adopted the methodology because it saves me that most valuable resource -- time.The Excel templates are available for an additional fee, but I'm too damn cheap to buy them and good enough with Excel to make my own templates. I also created tabs for an action item list, a risk register, an issues list, a requirements list, a contact list,... you get the idea. These weren't even mentioned in the book. What I ended up with is a project notebook that is a one-stop-shop for everything but the meeting minutes. The system outlined in the book is good, but incomplete.The other key deficiency I learned to deal with is that every place I've been insists on a plan either in MS Project or Clarity/Open Workbench. Most places also have specific reporting requirements and their own formats for these reports. You either sell the boss on this system, or you conform to their ways and use this as your own personal backup. I'll give the boss some credit, as Clarity or Project Server will allow reporting capabilities that a simple Excel spreadsheet will not, but I personally don't like to enter the same information in two different places. It's extra work to keep several systems updated, but that's the way of the world. You can use this system, but you will either sell it to the key stakeholders or end up doing extra duty.I'm sort of new to this Amazon review thing, but if you want a copy of my consolidated project management Excel workbook, feel free to contact me. Those elements include: objectives, sub-objectives, tasks, timeline, risks, accountability of team members, accountability metrics (including budget), qualitative notes, forecast, and summary.Content I Found Particularly Helpful:- Most essential communication tips for collaboration (p 3 & 4).- "How to" chapters are: Chpt 4, 5, & 6.- Agile project management is covered in chapters 7, 8, 9. (This book assumes some prior understanding of agile PM. I am completely unfamiliar with the difference between "regular" and "agile" and struggled to fully comprehend the difference from this book. With that said, I followed the content of these chapters just fine.)- Chapter 10 = "How to Think About Projects." This will be helpful for training novice project managers and is probably a good refresher of fundamentals for experienced PMs.- Chapter 12 = "Consulting and Marketing with OPPM." This chapter explores how the OPPM can be used to make proposals and communicate with clients effectively. I am very jazzed about this concept!- BONUS: Training videos and templates available at the book's website.Having worked in the corporate and entrepreneurial world, I can't imagine an organization that would not benefit from the OPPM. Non-profit organizations, too!Glad to have spent time with a book that is so informative and will prove to be very useful...tomorrow!

The method itself is great, but the book spends the first two chapters talking about how awesome the book and its previous editions are. For a book that emphasizes conciseness, it sure spends a lot of time on information that doesn't make a real difference to your success in implementing OPPM.The author ought to cut the first chapter out entirely and merge the few tidbits of information in it with chapter 2, minus the endorsements in chapter 2, the author, who is clearly a fan of conciseness, could save at least 15 pages by not tooting his own horn so much.Also, chapter 1 spends time describing the OPPM template, but does not show a pictorial example, for example it discusses where particular colored figures go in the OPPM, but it doesn't SHOW you. But 2 pages before it does that, it says that pictures are worth more than words.All in all the authors should spend more time practicing what they preach and less time self-congratulating to make a better book. I'm not saying the information itself is bad or the methodology is bad, quite the contrary, but it's hard to stomach paying for tens of pages of shameless self promotion in a book that's only 200 pages, so that means 10% of what I paid for the book was the authors self-promoting. That doesn't sit well with me...

I had more or less voluntarily started out as a Project Manager for a development project with a decent budget, multiple deliveries and a development team spread out over three continents. I actively looking for a way to communicate what we were doing both to my superiors, project sponsors, the team and to myself. I was truly lucky to find this gem. fantastic book! Illustrations were beautiful and the book arrived weeks ahead of when it said it would. My gaming group has said that FotN is probably their favourite RPG that we play now, and can't wait for more, which, since I have the core rule book, is definitely going to happen. Also the dweller play mat is also an interesting way of keeping gameplay track (actions, hp, etc.). It's unique to this game and part of the RGS. Though RGS requires a lot of props (rune sets for each player, lot's of sheet of paper, etc) it can be quite annoying and salty in the end. Also, paper quality is questionable for the price I've found (45~ rounded up) and there are typing errors all around the book. Some are very amateurish, other can be ditched easily. One peculiarity is that this book is fairly big (bigger than D&D 5th edition core's width and height), but the content doesn't follow it's size. Though typography does, letters are somewhat big meanwhile texts are very concise and direct to the point which gave me the sensation that its execution was lacking a lot of content or they just picked the wrong measures for the book. Mechanics explanation can be somewhat confusing, but it's not in old GURPS level of confusion. And it does have examples for every single situation which helps a lot. I recommend going through reviews on drivethrurpg which are more thorough before buying.Do I regret buying? No a single bit. Would've done twice, but I only need one book :P

One of the most amazing RPGs created.

Here's a quick run-down on why this book is a 5-star+ The setting is deep, immersive, and very close to actual norse mythology. It's actually so close to the myth that you can read texts from the Prose Edda and other traditionnal works and weave them directly into the game. The author also chose to eschew the vanilla "let's be vikings in norseland with gods" angle and actually triggered Ragnarok. The result is a never-ending winter that feels very close to a post-apocalyptic setting (light sources and food are scarce, people fight for ressources...).+ The system is clever, tactical and satisfying. Using runes seems like a gimmick at first but many mechanics (powers are linked to certain runes you draw so you don't get access to all your abilities in one given turn, your runes are withdrawn from the bag as you take damage so your options wither with wounds...) are really refreshing and give something very different from the usual roll and compare.+ Every character option is interesting, with loads of flavor and actual use in and our of combat.+ The book is a pleasure to read and it's just gorgeous, with either full-color or line art every single page.- You'll need to either find generic Elder Futhark runes somewhere and paint them up (for the color cues), buy them directly from Pendelhaven or print them up on carton. Obviously, stone/wooden runes feel a lot more tactiale and heftier, and play much better during an actual game. That's increased cost for a gaming group, but it's very playable with only paper runes nonetheless.- The rules are a little on the heavy side. They're perfect if you're a D&D/Pathfinder/OSR-avid player, but don't go in there looking for an indie ruleset.All in all, it's a superb addition to most roleplayers' shelf.

Fate of the Norns: Ragnarok is a post-apocalyptic medieval Norse-centric RPG. By setting the game after the start of Ragnarok, the apocalypse of Norse mythology, Valkauskas can do anything he likes, really, without worrying about running into a lot of problems with historical accuracy and the like. He does need to keep to mythological accuracy, but that’s a lot more forgiving than the bare historical record. It does step on history a bit, to be sure, but it’s not too egregious, and besides – that’s not really the point.The point is a cinematic action-heavy RPG with a bunch of Vikings, skalds, berserkers, and witches coming together in a clash of arms and magic, and it delivers this very well. Actions basically always succeed in the Runic Game System – if you play a rune to attack a guy, you hit that guy, and do damage – the damage may be mitigated by his armor, or he could block the attack, or what-have-you, but you don’t roll a low number on a die and miss entirely. That’s the really interesting part of this game – instead of rolling dice, you draw runestones from a bag and you can take certain actions based on what you draw. If the Uruz rune is associated with a mighty attack for your character, and you draw that one, then you can perform that mighty attack if you want. Hit points, rather than a number that decays with time and has no real effect on your character in a lot of RPGs (you are at full power until you hit 0 or something, at which point you are at zero power) are handled with the runestones as well. When your character takes damage, you draw runes from your bag and put them on a damage track – until you recover, you won’t be able to use whatever power is associated with that runestone, and thus taking damage has actual immediate effects on your character’s ability to take actions.I think the Runic Game System is the most interesting part of Fate of the Norns: Ragnarok – it’s an impressive innovation and I haven’t seen anything quite like it elsewhere (of course, there are a _lot_ of RPG systems, so maybe I just missed one out there that’s similar).The core rulebook has a lot of information on how to create characters and play the game, of course, and it’s got a sort of primer on the state of Nordic civilization at the start of Ragnarok, as well as what changes have come now that wolves have eaten the sun and the moon and it’s winter all the time. There’s a sample adventure, as well, to get your feet wet and get the hang of the system. There aren’t any pregenerated characters in the core book, and character creation is kind of confusing at first, but there are some pregenerated characters (or “dwellers”) available for download on the game’s website at www.fateofthenorns.com.The game is, by and large, pretty easy to get the hang of. It always seems mystifying at first, but after playing for a short time, it firms up pretty readily and gets fairly easy to handle. There are additional layers of complexity that come along later, but at first, it’s really pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Like riding a bicycle, cleaving a troll in twain is just a skill you never forget. You’ll be running across the fjords in no time.Oh – the art. I would be remiss not to mention it. The art for all Fate of the Norns: Ragnarok supplements is utterly fantastic. It’s probably the best RPG art I’ve ever seen.Major Plusses: innovative game system, excellent Viking actionMajor Minuses: character creation kind of confusing, possibly not fun if you really, really hate Vikings.
