All I can say is terrible stereotyping and some pretty disastrous dialogue. It was one GREAT BIG cliché story line with metaphors that were sledgehammers instead of pictures to guide the imagination. Drama, drama and more with some foreshadowing that makes me feel like the person who wrote the book is so far removed from being a young adult that they had some kind of willy wonka warped sense of what life for any teen could be like.I have read some pretty amazing YA over the past few years and this unfortunately was cringe worthy.EXCERPT:"Color leads me to the back of the store and stops in front of an archway that has no door, just a red velvet curtain hanging over the entrance. Above the curtain are the words "Adults Only." "This is the old porn section" she says. "Many a lonely soul wandered behind this curtain looking for comfort." Comfort?? Is that what we're calling it now?" Jesus smiles. "God I love to comfort myself." "Multiple times a day." Moss says, walking up behind us. I peek over my shoulder at him startled. Our eyes connect. He has the same gray eyes as Color. Moss bites down on a chip and says with his mouth full, "In your case, that is, Jesus.""It's important for the soul." Jesus pats his heart and then his hand moves down to his pants. "AND MY FROTHING WAND."My take is that with all the excellent and mind enriching YA out there why give a child this? I paid for it, my 5 Cent opinion, just as you have yours.
First of all, I don't remember the last time that I read a Young Adult novel but am so glad that I selected this one for my First Read selection for October 2018.For me, this novel contained all of the right elements and in exactly the right spots to make it a captivating as well as an emotional read. A family moves from Ohio to New Mexico and this is the location the novel begins.Esther is a member of the relocated family and is longing to find new friends. She is 16 years old and feels 'adrift' in her new location. Luckily, she meets some new friends (Jesus, Moss, Color and Beth) that are all experiencing growing pains of their own.Humor is interjected frequently that helps ease the reader through some truly difficult times. I thought that the 'Complex Math Problems' were a perfect addition to nearly every chapter. Witticisms abound and these problems/answers greatly added to the flow of the chapters.Truth or Consequences is the name of the town in New Mexico where the teenagers live and it also proves to be a most appropriate name. The author delves into truth, trust, faith, the relationship between siblings and parents, as well as letting go. Early love and the consequences thereof are also covered in depth.Four quotations that I felt contributed to this novel: "Best kind of love is simple', 'Pain is inevitable in life', 'Sometimes we just have to paint the walls and start over', and 'The Universe is always speaking'.Well written novel that has excellent character development. Toss in the humor, mix this with the angst of the teenagers and one has an 'awesome' novel....as Pastor Rick would say! Also, loved the Heaven hideaway the teenagers used for an escape.Most highly recommended.
I chose this book as my October free read because I really liked “The Odds of Loving Grover Cleveland†by the same author. The current book is a little similar in a sense that it features troubled teenagers and radiates plenty of empathy and optimism. I liked it a little less than a previous book but I definitely enjoyed it.The main plot circles around the teenage pregnancy but there is much more to the tale; the friendships, the parent-child and siblings bonds, the life compromises to be made, the broken families and the unbroken loyalties. The story is told in the first person by the 16 year old girl going through a very difficult period of her life. Depressed and alone at the beginning, she eventually finds herself surrounded by four friends, all of them with their own big problems. They cope with their tribulations by putting on a perky facades and engaging themselves in amusing conversations. They discuss love, sex, religion math and philosophy. The dialogs seem very authentic, just as they might be between 16 years old, intelligent but a little alienated kids. But despite their bravado talk, because of being so young, they have very limited life experience. Symptomatic of their youth is that when they discuss the questionable reality of the material world (what an amazing idea it is when you first encounter it as a teenager!) they do not talk about Plato but about a movie “Inceptionâ€.The book is loaded with amusing statements, some very simple and funny, some pretty deep in their nature. I enjoyed all of them but I can imagine that some people more sensitive about sex or religion may find them less amusing. My favored one was: “The glass is half full or half empty but is the glass really a glass?â€I liked this book but keep in mind that it was written for young adults and from the point of view of 16 years old. If you are older you probably would have to remind yourself how you felt when you were 16. And then you will fully enjoy it.
