A little academic in spots but a fascinating history of how gay men and women did their part during WWII. The official discrimination they faced was inconsistent certainly, with many officers looking the other way if they were pulling their weight and others going out of their way to "bust the queers". Regardless of your personal attitudes towards the gay community, the part they played in helping to win the war cannot be discounted.

I'm an author and read this while doing research for a novel. My eyes were opened. While gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans volunteered, and died in the service to our country during WWII, they were, for the most part, systematically discriminated against and treated with dishonesty, humiliation and psychological abuse.Sometimes mere accusations with no proof were enough to drum a member out of our armed forces depriving them of rights and the GI Bill benefits. To make it worse, their draft boards were told and work got around in civilian life that they were unfit. In that era, after the war, the lack of an honorable discharge often cast such a dark shadow that many couldn't find work.For those who believe being gay is a choice and a sin I disagree with you. I ask if you truly believe that or if you are doing a knee-jerk reaction to poison ideas implanted in you.This story is history, and you won't read of it in standard history books. Discrimination is discrimination is wrong. The pledge of allegiance ends: "with liberty and justice for all."

I had no idea so many gay folks served and found ways to have their own subculture right under the noses of a government that would blue-slip them out of the Army if they were caught. Such an important book in this current administration.

this is an excellent book, revealing a bit of history that I am sure very few are aware. I thought is was well written and factual; the characters in this book are what they are and it was interesting to hear their point of view of a situation they bascily had no control over, being drafted into military service. If anything this helps give a presepctive as to why the military has acted the way they have when it comes to gay and lesbian service members. These individuals showed great courage and charater as their stories unfold. Well worth the read.

I really wanted to love this book, but I just didn't. I was so looking forward to it based on the reviews and the subject matter. I am an avid WWII history buff, and couldn't wait to read about what it was like to be gay not only in the service at that time, but just during that era. The book was very good. Very interesting and enlightening. But I found it extremely repetitive. Each chapter could have been half the length and still effectively told the story. He also repeatedly used the same phrases to describe various situations. I often found myself losing interest as chapters went on, though I enjoyed what I read up to that point. Overall though, well worth the purchase and the read. It could have just been half the length.

I wish it had more individual stories

Used for UC Berkeley History class. Definitely would recommend, every eye opening!

We wonder about American education and why our students don't learn more. Don't blame the teachers! This book and the research it is based on provides guidance for all of us, in particular our school systems, regarding how our schools can do better.

This book not only has interesting observations about teaching but more importantly has how teachingIs a cultural phenomena which can have large impact for those that are trying to change teaching.

The scary conclusion for parents is that math is basically not taught. What passes for math teaching in the US is training kids in the rote application of some math-like algorithms. An example is giving kids the formula for Pythagoras's theorem and having them apply it tens of times instead of teaching them how to prove it and how it connects to the other basic theorems. Words and formulae rather than completing the proof alone.The result is that most kids never develop a coherent picture of the full math landscape and never develop the self confidence and the tools to be able to guide themselves through mathematical reasoning in this landscape. Some teach themselves math in spite of this system, some others catch up in college but most are robbed of the opportunity to get these skills.

Interesting reflection on how to improve teaching. Convincing argument. A must-read for policy-makers! Making teachers responsible for researching education appears a very sensible idea.

OMG I COULDNT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! I am loving this story i can’t honestly wait to see what’s next?! .. i can’t wait to find out what’s Harley going to discover on all the secret behind her family & the truth behind this whole mess! i honestly can’t wait to see what the futures hold for her! She’s truly the definition of HARDCORE AWSOMR CHICK!!! AND THE romances i am loving the couples! I just need more of H & W....!!!!! I can’t wait for next book!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! OMG I COULDNT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! I am loving this story i can’t honestly wait to see what’s next?! ..

I am sill not a huge fan of all the different Pov but I am getting used to it but Harley is my favourite character. Finally Katherine Shipton shows up albeit at the end of this book. I would have thought they would have tried to remove the suppressor by now if they need Harley to be more powerful but it rarely comes up and her broken esprit has yet to be fixed. Definitely more action on this book but too many loose ends that detract from the story.

Can't wait to see what Harley does next! I just wish that Wade would kiss her already! Those 2 where made for each other. Oh, then there is Santana Raffe! WOW now there's definitely romance and passion in that relationship starting up! Raffe bad side I gotta admit is kinda hot! Keep the books coming Bella! Your an incredible author!

Lord help me what a rollercoaster!!! I couldn't put this book down. Like I dont want to spoil it for yall so all I'm gonna say if hold on for dear life reading this book I have so many questions and I need answers! Bella Forrest always dose an amazing job with her books but this one .. just wow you have to read it

If you love her Shade of Vampire series you will love Harley Merlin and her friends. Well written can't wait for the next book. Hope she keeps this series going as she has with her Shade of Vampire series developing her characters and creating new generations to love.

Love the way the series is written. The book moves along at a good pace. The characters all seem to has a believable role that they fulfill which makes the reader care about each one. At the end of each book, I can not wait for the next book to be released.

Stumbled across the first book when I was looking for something new and different to read. Rarely does an author grab you and suck you into a book but this is what Bella has done. I anxiously await each release and gobble up the pages when it hits my Kindle. Great job. Although I want to know what the letter said! I can't wait 2 more weeks! 😂

I am a huge fan of Julia's first cookbook, Small Victories, and it's now a go-to present for friends and family members of all cooking levels. I pre-ordered Now and Again and am once again thrilled. As always, her recipes are well-written and include thoughtful attention to detail for cooks who want to feed themselves and the folks they love without wasting food or money. I appreciated her creative interpretations of leftovers (e.g., the cauliflower and leftover salad soup) that encourage us to think a little differently or deliberately about what we cook. It's also always nice to know I'm not the only one who makes meatloaf just so she can have meatloaf sandwiches the next day!Everything I have made so far (including the kale and pepita salad, the applesauce cake, Italian flag pasta bake, confetti meatloaf, eggs with coconut cilantro sauce, beef and zucchini meatballs) will stay in rotation for our household, and I'm looking forward to cooking through the rest of the book!

I already have dozens of cookbooks and mostly rely on the internet for new recipes these days but after hearing an interview with the author on a podcast (The Sporkful?), I was very interested in her book. I literally read it like a novel, from cover to cover. Each chapter is a full meal/menu and then has suggestions about how to use various leftovers. At the back she has a "List of 7's" with lists of 7 ways to use leftover rice, 7 ways to use leftover produce, leftover snacks, etc.It's a really great book for the frugal foodie who doesn't like to see food go to waste and wants to be creative doing it.

This is not a book about leftovers as much as it is about entertaining. Now and Again is structured by entire meal - about 3-4 dishes that can work for groups of 4-6. Worry not if you're only two, because the book also includes extremely clever tips for using leftovers.I made an Italian lunch from the book, which included a baked ziti with ground turkey and creamy spinach mixed in, toasts with anchovy/garlic butter, and an arugula salad with pine nuts and lemon. The combination was a huge crowd pleaser, and the recipes were a joy - simple, no fuss, and no crazed steps. Very difficult to screw up.At the end, about half the salad was leftover. Each meal has tips for leftovers, and in this case the author suggested I blend the arugula salad with garlic, olive oil, and salt to make pesto. And, well, it made a delicious pesto. From soggy salad to delicious pesto with hardly any effort - genius.This book is brilliant in its simplicity. Easy to make yet impressive meals with no waste at the end. No need to think about what dishes to combine to form a meal - it's all planned out for you. I own about 30 cookbooks and this is my new favorite.

This is my third book by Julia (the author)! She's a wonderful writer and the recipes are so easy to make. If you're looking for a cookbook that you will grab often when you want to spice up your leftovers, this is the book. You might also look for FEED the Resistance Cookbook if you want a cookbook with a cause attached to it! You will not regret getting these cookbook! The ”Seven List” in this book is the best addition! All cookbooks should be required to have this :-)

One of the best cookbooks I’ve come across. The meals are amazing. We have a cookbook Club and we’ve been doing it for two years. We still talk about Turshens Small Victories Cookbook which was our first meeting. She again turned out an AMAZING cookbook. I’m sold she’s one of the best out there - a modern day ina!

This book has been living in our coffee table since Sept 4th when it arrived. I've read through it, my kids have read through it (they picked the chocolate cake to be out first recipe) and even my mom (who would rather make reservations for dinner) read through it (she liked the no fuss feel if the meals). Cookbooks are great coffee table books. Great Illustrations and storyMy 2 1/2 year old loves the detailed illustrations and the story. Good book for older toddlers who enjoy a bit more words in their stories while seeing the words represented in the drawings.

I was hoping this book would be easier for my students who read a lower levels. Luckily they were very familiar with this story since this is part of a big unit on the Gingerbread Man. I would level this about an I or J on Fountas and Pinnell.

I purchased this book because I enjoyed it going up and I read it to my children. Now I'm a grandma and decided to start reading to my grandchildren and they love it, what surprised me the most is the price of this used (NEW) book, it wasnt used at all and I was able to personalize this book with their names in it so now they smile saying read my book.this was one of many books I've purchased and love so much. I have recommended this to my children for home collections. even their cheap selves can afford this. Thank you soo much

It's very difficult to find fairy tales that are appropriate for preschoolers -- either they're "uncensored" and too close to the original, dark versions, or they're too long and wordy to keep a young child's attention. This one is great because it's direct, simple, but well-written. The story isn't all sugar cones and candy canes, but it's not as brutal as the original Grimm and Andersen versions either. The pictures are beautiful. My four-year-old loves this book, and has started quoting "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" at the most random moments. Great find, and we have enjoyed several of the other books in this series as well.

I used to teach pre-school and this was a gift for a three year old. The story wasn't the original. Since when do Princesses in Fairytales get pregnant and give birth to twins before their knight in shining armour marries them. What is the author trying to teach our young children. There's enough garbge on TV. We don't need it in children's Fairytales.

A courageous, sad debut memoir on being a caregiver to a terminally ill family member.After 41 years of marriage, George and Carol Shannon's time together became increasingly marked by silence. Their three sons had left home, and the couple had taken to living ostensibly separate lives, with George spending time at the driving range working on his golf swing and Carol consumed by her books. This "extended stale phase," as George calls it, ended abruptly during a trip to Cabo with family. Carol had been subject to "mini-strokes" in the past, but on this occasion, the stroke severely affected the movement of much of her body and speech. Faced with an uncertain future, George, a cancer survivor, provided the majority of Carol's care following her discharge from the hospital. The memoir is written from the first-person perspective of George and is co-authored by George's middle son, Chad Shannon, who would often stand in for his father as caregiver. The authors reveal the continual tension and sometimes-frantic rush associated with caring for a sick loved one: "I knew [Chad] could be at the hospital within minutes....I flew for the giant entrance to the unit...this unit was the hospital's crisis center. The people they brought here faced death." The mix of terror and hope is palpable on such occasions. This is a wonderfully moving story that is at times funny, reflective, and heartbreaking, yet it always feels gut-wrenchingly honest. While the story is the very personal journey of George Shannon, the themes of redemption, dedication, and trying to make up for lost time are universal and I found myself feeling like I was along for the ride with him throughout the journey. While this book is extremely relevant for caregivers, I would recommend it to anyone that is trying to build a successful and lasting relationship.

Sad but true

When his wife of 41 years had a debilitating stroke, George Shannon's life took a turn into a period of both intensive caregiving and deep reflection on his own life and values. With The Best Seven Years of My Life (2018, George B. I thought this would be a great book to give my mother who is a caregiver for my father with parkinsons but was disappointed. Also impatient that george took an inordinate amount of responsibility both for the years of his marriage and after carol got sick. It is hard to truly know someone who never offers an opinion. It is also a burden to be the one who always has to make all the decisions with no input. Don't be so hard on yourself George! in sickness and in health is a vow we take and I agree that we have to accept situations that present themselves.But there is no sin in carving out moments for oneself amidst caregiving duties.We often wonder if we are "up to the task" when catastrophe strikes and often surprised to find that we can "step up"Kudos to George for finding the joy in that.The book is a bit repetitive and there are nuggets of wisdom we can all take away.But I wish he showed how he also made time for himself so I could pass it on to my parents.
